About this Cook
Moved to beautiful Houston from the Midwest 5 years ago and love everything about the place (yes, even the heat. Especially the heat!) I'm lucky to share my home with 2 free-loading, spoiled rescue cats, and I am especially blessed with a wonderful group of friends. We share recipes and meals, wine, & laughter (usually right after the wine) on a regular basis. Finally, I believe that when you cook with love, it goes into the pot along with the rest of the ingredients. :)
My favorite things to cook
chili, pork tenderloin, anything chicken, French onion soup, grilled steaks. My boyfriend lives with me and is a most appreciative and willing guinea pig for any new recipes that may strike my fancy to try, although I try to keep us eating as healthy as possible. Recently began cooking steaks in the cast-iron pan rather than grilling ~ Mom always swore by hers and still does.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Mom wasn't one to let us into the kitchen when she was cooking, but I grew up learning to be a great prep person! She recently gave me my grandmother's "Detroit Times" cookbook from when she was a new bride during the Great Depression. Words can't describe the feeling of reading my grandmother's notes in the margins or my grandfather's handwritten elderberry wine recipe.
My cooking triumphs
When all the food gets on the table at the same time, that's a triumph for me.
My cooking tragedies
Dropping a full bowl of raw chicken pieces + marinade in and around the refrigerator just as friends were ringing the doorbell.

Slow Cooker Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin
BF LOVED this dish! Kept telling me this was the best tenderloin I had ever cooked! Followed master recipe except for the peppers, which I didn't have. Substituted dried peppers/pepper flakes because we like it spicy. Pork was cooked in 5 hours at LOW. Let meat rest and - per reviews - thickened sauce with a bit of cornstarch. Also added a can of baby corns and bamboo shoots to sauce at this point (water chestnuts would have worked as well). Steamed some broccoli and fresh green beans. Layered meat, broccoli, and beans over rice and spooned sauce over all. Yummy!

This recipe makes absolutely great guac! I like my guacamole kind of chunky, so didn't mash all the avocadoes. Took this to a housewarming party - and we're picky about our guacamole here in TX - and the men basically parked themselves around the bowl until it was all gone. Highly recommend this!

Roasted Lemon Herb Chicken
a super easy recipe and the house smells wonderful while it's roasting! Combined all ingredients of seasonings + lemon juice + olive oil in bowl (used herbes de provence and Greek seasoning instead of Italian) and rubbed mixture inside chicken as well as under skin and over skin. Also rubbed inside w/ butter and inserted pats under skin. Stuffed w/ garlic cloves, lemon halves, fresh rosemary and oregano. Turned out great! BF ate half the chicken himself
