I am DEFINITELY an "old soul" raising my family in a VERY modern world. Depression cookbooks are my favorite and I am COMPLETELY fascinated with how life was way back when. My children are raised with a twist of old school knowledge and modern applications.
My favorite things to cook
I LOVE to cook just about everything from breads to casseroles, desserts to restaurant recipes. I tend to be a 'southern style' cook, even tho I was grew up near Chicago. Beans and rice, breads, soul food.....everything is made from scratch. EVERYTHING!!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
We don't eat out and I don't use anything from a box (with the exception of pasta, which is my once every two weeks lazy meal!) Every meal is cooked from scratch down to the breads. I LOVE to try new recipes and my kids decide if it's a "keeper" or not. :)
My cooking triumphs
My biggest triumph --my baby, my pride and joy-- is my homemade BBQ sauce. That is the ONE thing people request me to bring to EVERY BBQ. Friends have asked me to make GALLONS of it for Christmas gifts!
My cooking tragedies
I almost burned my grandmothers house down trying to cook catfish on her electric stove. I was used to my gas stove, and I turned to walk over to the fridge while I was heating up 2 tbsp of oil in the pan The heat was only on 5 but within the 30 seconds it took me to open the fridge door, the pan caught on fire, shot flames to the ceiling and even tho I was raised in that house, I couldn't remember where the lids were to the skillet!!! I was trying to be calm and ask my grandmother, who walks into the kitchen and sees her stove on fire! Needless to say, I was never allowed to cook in her house again! LOL
