Creamy German Coleslaw

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2014
I've made this one a few times, and I'm pretty sure it's the keeper. Easy, fast, (I think it takes me about 6 minutes, and that includes chopping the cabbage), and just the perfect classic version I had been looking for. I've tried a lot of them; the cooked versions, the ones with a cup of sugar and mayo, the ones with mustard or horseradish or whatever, and they're all too sweet, or too gloppy, or just not the flavor I was missing, this one is just perfect, and the exact right amount of dressing for the softball sized organic cabbages I usually have languishing in the crisper. I do add a carrot, and today I added a green pepper that I needed to use up, I imagine you can add anything you like and it would be fine. I mix the dressing in a tupperware bowl, dump the cabbage and carrot on top, shake, done, and even better the next day. Really happy with this one, thank you!

Black Bean and Sweet Potato Quesadillas

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2014
Tried this for dinner tonight, really good! I also went the lazy route, once the potatoes were softish, I poured the water off and added black beans and corn, garlic, chili, and onion powder to the same pot, then just mushed it all together. Spread on whole wheat tortilla and added spinach and cheese, and voila, dinner! Nice basic recipe that you could add lots of interesting things to, definitely a keeper. Thanks!

Slow Cooker Mongolian Beef

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2013
I rarely write reviews, but this one deserves a rave. I followed the directions almost exactly, except I used super-cheap, thin-cut eye of round, and it turned out ridiculously well. It tastes like Korean BBQ, which is awesome, and I was surprised that the onions still had some crunch after four hours. I served it over brown rice the first night, then the second night I just put the leftovers back in the crock pot with some bean sprouts and some frozen stir fry veg, served it in a bowl with cellophane noodles, and the second time was just as good. I will be trying this with chicken next, and maybe with some water chestnuts and bamboo shoots, things that will hold up in the crock pot like the onions. Super easy, fantastic flavor, totally recommended as written, but has tons of potential. Thanks for sharing.

Garlic Chicken Stir Fry

Reviewed: Oct. 3, 2011
I didn't have green onions or cabbage OR snap peas so I used the emergency bag of frozen stir fry veggies and it still turned out great. Can't wait to try with bok choi and proper veg, will probably get 6 or 7 stars then! Really good stuff, easy and tasty.

Dad's Leftover Turkey Pot Pie

Reviewed: Nov. 28, 2010
I made this for dinner tonight, turned out great. As for the dreaded modifications; I did cut the butter to 1/2 cup cause we were short on it, and added a whole onion, probably 1 1/3 cups, cause I like onion. Also added a diced potato to sub for some of the celery and carrot which turned out to be a nice addition. I used a basic oil/water/flour pie crust. My only minor complaint was it was a little runny, next time I will cut bigger slits in the top crust and bake it a little longer. Overall the flavor was very good, and I especially liked that there was no canned cream of "whatever" involved. Will definitely make this again.

Dad's Kentucky Home Fries

Reviewed: Nov. 6, 2010
This is what my dad made for breakfast on the weekends as a side to eggs and bacon, we called it "farm food". He's from Missouri, I think this dish happens anywhere there's German influence. MO, PA, TX, etc. as it vaguely resembles a German potato salad. Anyway, it's the greatest of breakfast comfort foods.

Chicken Noodle Soup

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2010
This is a really good recipe for basic chicken soup. I had to omit the celery(didn't have any, so doubled up on the onions)and the marjoram(none to be found, used basil and garlic) and used pasta shells that I had on hand. Everybody ate it, husband was impressed with the "homemade-ness". I'll definitely try it again when I have the proper ingredients on hand. Maybe try it when the leftover turkey comes around. Thanks for the easy dinner solution!

Wienerschnitzel

Reviewed: Nov. 5, 2010
I spent my teen years in Munich and have been jonesing for Wienerschnitzel since 1987. I used pork cutlets instead of veal (I just can't bring myself to buy veal), omitted the parmesan (it just didn't seem right) and forgot the nutmeg. Served with pommes and radiisalat, the way I remembered it. It pretty much rocked. Thanks for the post!!!

Steak Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Jul. 28, 2010
This was fantastic! So simple, and yet it turned out better than most of my other stir-fry attempts. I used last night's leftover beef, and I subbed water chestnuts for the carrots and a red onion for the green, otherwise followed directions. Was just looking for an easy Wednesday dinner and found the perfect stir-fry. I'm going to try the chicken modification next. Thanks for posting this!
