Love to cook! I cook/bake using staples and not mixes in our home. I like to know what is going into my stomach (as well as my childrens' stomaches).

100% Whole Wheat cookin!! And almost anything else!!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cinnamon Rolls on my mother's birthday! This started only last year after my mother (an excellent cook) passed away. She made better-than-Cinnabon Cinnamon rolls ever since I can remember. So, on her birthday each year, no matter where we are in the country, all of her kids bake cinnamon rolls.
My cooking triumphs
My kids eating Lentils and loving them!!! Ham & Potato Soup (throw some lentils in) and Lentils and Rice. Awesome, flavorful dishes that my family LOVES!!!!
My cooking tragedies
Hamburger casserole. Yuck!! Tried to invent a casserole that was like a hamburger in a 9x13.... very yuck!!! I was able to turn the rest of it (about 2/3 of the pan) into Shephard's Pie the next night. So I guess not a complete flop!

Pumpkin Gingerbread
I love the way this made my house smell!! It was so easy to change for healthier a little as well. I used 100% fresh ground whole wheat flour in place of all of the all purpose flour (add a smidge more baking powder and baking soda), along with applesauce instead of oil (added a small splash of Canola Oil) and changed the sugar into 1 cup white, 1 cup brown and 1/2 cup Mollasses (decrease the water by just a smidge since you add a bit of liquid this way)... perfect for gingerbread! We also used fresh pureed pie pumpkin that we roasted the day before. Awesome!!

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup
I have been making it for my family for over a year now. The only thing I changed though is I add one more cup water, 1 cup dry lentils. And I use one box vegetable broth instead of 6 bullion cubes. This cuts down the sodium immensely, but you still keep a lot of the flavor. I also use nonfat dry milk reconstituted for my milk to cut down costs. Just as creamy!!!

Fried Green Tomatoes
Loved this recipe. Last attempts had batter falling off. This did NOT. Used the mistake previously commented on of adding crushed crackers to the flour. Simpler to do and it worked beautifully. I would add a little more salt next time. And definitely not quite so green tomatoes!
