I've always had an inkling that I was actually meant to be a 50's housewife who was born in the wrong decade. I've got the crafting, party planning and hostessing down, but I am still working on my skills in the kitchen. I guess you could say I am a late bloomer in the cooking world, but I am learning new things and burning less things as time goes on. As my boyfriend says, I "show promise in the kitchen".
My favorite things to cook
I am trying to make a push for a more plant based diet. No, I am not talking about organic cooking, I am talking less meat, more color and less processed. And while I am not so into baking, I LOVE making cupcakes and decorating them for the occasion. You can really do a lot with batter and baking cups.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother and grandmother have long been hailed as Queens of sweets. I don't think there is a cookie/cake recipe they haven't tried and, trust me, they are pretty good at what they do. However, with their love for baking comes a lack in their cooking. They have never been the ones to use spices or herbs, and certainly not make a meal that was un-American. Every meal had a meat, 2 sides and a dessert. It got the job done, but once I moved out onto my own, my food world was rocked.

De-boning a chicken....sike! More like not burning the grilled cheese.
My cooking tragedies
I have yet to create the perfect strip of bacon.

Spinach Stuffed Chicken Breasts
Delicious and simple. (Though I'll have to admit I had to look up how to make a butterfly cut and I used too much garlic!) Bacon is a decent addition, but not necessary. I'm sure you could figure out a way to keep it all together using less meat.

Wild Rice and Asparagus Chicken Breasts
My intention was to make the recipe exactly as is, but it didn't turn out that way. I used the recipe as a guide and made a lot of changes. I added a red pepper, water chestnuts, and baby corn. The grocery didn't have hiosin sauce so I just added just brown sugar, pepper and soy sauce (nearly double what the recipe called for). When the chicken was near done I added cayenne pepper for some spiciness. Turned out fabulous! Next time I think I am going to add peanuts for a bit of crunch, but the right vegetables make the dish stand out!
