The Best Bean and Ham Soup

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2010
This soup really has such a depth of flavor. I was a little hesitant about the Dijon mustard and thought I had definitely made a mistake after adding it - I tasted the broth shortly after adding it and it was such an overpowering taste. Four hours later, everything had just come together and after another couple of hours it was PERFECT! I will never throw away a ham bone again. Delicious!

Emily's Famous Tiramisu

Reviewed: Apr. 20, 2010
This recipe was fine - I think I just prefer a more dense tiramisu and the flavor was a bit eggy. My grandfather called it "poofy" and I think that describes it perfectly.

This came out a bit eggy and too light for my taste.

Zucchini Pineapple Bread I

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2010
A little dry actually. Don't know what happened - did recipe as written with the exception of replacing 1/2 of oil with applesauce and that usually works in other recipes without making things dry. Oh well.

Quick and Easy Vegetable Soup

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2010
My favorite vegetable soup from now on - seriously, this just has the right combination/ratio of tomato flavor and the Creole seasoning is key. Love it and have already made it three more times - oh and I add a can of rinsed white beans for more protein and fiber.

Egg Roll Wrappers

Reviewed: Aug. 7, 2010
These made a thick crepe - used them as such and ended up going out to buy egg roll wrappers 'cause they just didn't work. Good crepe recipe I guess, if you don't have milk in the house.

Fudge

Reviewed: Aug. 15, 2010
For the amount of work...none...and the results, I give this 5 stars! Came out creamy and not too sweet. I pressed pecans into a third of the batch, coconut into the next third and left the final section plain. All tasted wonderful. I will definitely use this recipe again.

Capers and Halibut

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2010
This was a quick easy fix. I think I'll cut the butter by a couple tablespoons and will increase the wine to 3/4 cup next time so that I have more, less greasy sauce. Good flavor combination though. Will use this as a go-to recipe for all kinds of fish.

Lana's Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Reviewed: Oct. 28, 2010
Wow. Made this tonight to bring to a potluck tomorrow and I'm gonna have to stop "sampling" or I won't have any to bring to the party. I did make some additions - used fresh ginger and garlic in the meatballs and added another 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt. In the sauce, I doubled everything except the cornstarch - just used 4 tablespoons because that seemed like the right thickness for me. And, I added a cup of ketchup because I needed the sauce to be red and I like a tomato tang in all of my sauces. It is perfection and I know they will be a hit tomorrow. Also, I think I'm going to bake all of my meatballs from now on instead of pan frying - it's so easy and the meatballs stay round!

Buttery Corn Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 9, 2011
I don't know how I missed this recipe in my search for the perfect cornbread. Made it exactly as written but as muffins after scaling the recipe down to 8 servings and it made 12 muffins filled with about 1/3 cup of batter each. Baked for about 18 minutes and they were PERFECT. I don't need to look for another recipe. So good.

Made these as written with the exception of using kielbasa instead of bacon. Really great - love the broth, delicious with some fresh bread and butter! I will be making these again and again, just without the bacon.

Kettle Corn

Reviewed: Sep. 3, 2012
So good. So easy. There was a moment there when I put in the sugar and it kind of solidified to my spoon that I stirred it with that I thought it would be a disaster. Lo and behold, it came out perfect, only a few unpopped kernels left. I did sprinkle and toss with salt at the end. Just like the stuff at Farmer's Market!
