Indian Eggplant - Bhurtha

Reviewed: Aug. 27, 2014
Very happy. I've tried other Bhurtha recipes which were more complicated and yielded bland results. This was a simple recipe, very flavourful with a hint of spiciness left on the tongue. I added frozen peas as the recipe hint suggested. I also substituted cumin powder for seeds because I couldn't find any. And used leek instead of onion simply because I don't like onions. Also, I didn't bother peeling the tomato. I already plan on making it again for company. This was delicious eaten with naan bread.

Grandmother's Buttermilk Cornbread

Reviewed: Jun. 10, 2012
This was my first time making Cornbread. And to be completely truthful, my first time ever tasting cornbread...so I really didn't have anything to compare this too. I followed the directions to the letter. It came out nice and moist...and sweet (which I like because I do have a sweet tooth). I served this as a side to Boston Baked Beans and really enjoyed it... so did my guests. The recipe was very simple and easy to do. I will keep this recipe and make it again.

Grandma's Corn Chowder

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2011
I thought this was a decent chowder, but nothing fantastic. The chowder was very thin so I added a roux like others had suggested. I also substituted the water with chicken broth, added a pinch of nutmeg as others did, and halved the salt. Something wasn't right....can't place my finger on it though. I'll try this recipe again....maybe without the modifications...maybe...

Chewy Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 12, 2011
This is the cookie recipe I've been looking for my whole life! I've made this recipe three times now. The first two times the cookies came out soft and chewy and very tasty. I did take the advice of some reviews and added a 1/2 cup more flour, doubled the baking soda, and decreased the salt by half. I also placed the batter in the fridge for 30 mins before baking to decrease spreading/flat cookies. The 3rd time I followed the recipe exactly without the modification and the result...disappointment. The cookies spread (even though I placed the batter in the fridge for 1/2 hr). They weren't the same cookies...they weren't as good. As a result, I will continue to bake them with the modifications. Follow the modifications and these are Wonderful cookies! Everyone who tried them thought so too and consequently they disappeared in no time, and left friends asking when I plan on making more :)

Spinach Chickpea Curry

Reviewed: Jun. 2, 2010
What attracted me to this recipe was how quick and easy it was. It took minimal amounts of effort. I was a little weary of how it was going to taste because it's quite different from most meals I cook...but I was pleasantly surprised. Even my bf who was more sceptical than I (because of the tofu) admitted he liked it and would even have it again. I really liked what the spinach added to the dish and I will make this again. I give this recipe a 4 out of 5 because it's tasty, easy, fast with minimal clean up...but not a 5 because it wasn't a "wow! omg! This taste fan-friggin'-tastic!"

Insanely Easy Vegetarian Chili

Reviewed: May 9, 2010
LOVE LOVE LOVE! What more can I say? I don't like ground beef, so finding a veggie chili recipe was a real treat. This recipe is just full of flavour. It has become one of my regular dishes. One thing I do suggest is to double the chili power and cumin. The first time I made this my boyfriend added twice as much by accident. The second time I made it, I added the correct amount and it just didn't taste right...a little on the bland side. So from now on I double the cumin and chili powder and it never fails to please. I strongly recommend anyone to give this recipe a try...and to serve it with garlic bread :)

Marinated Broccoli

Reviewed: May 9, 2010
I like how simple this recipe is. It doesn't take a lot of effort and it's difficult to mess up. And I like how it's something different. The salad came out wonderfully. Presentation wise, it looks very appealing. I used red, yellow, and orange peppers. I also used a combination of broccoli and cauliflower. The dressing had a nice mild taste to it. I think this is a great summer salad. I enjoyed the one I made with a BBQ.

Whole Wheat and Honey Pizza Dough

Reviewed: Aug. 8, 2009
Great Recipe! I followed the advice of S Griffin, and baked it for 17 mins @ 350, put on toppings, baked for 15-20 mins @ 350, and then on broil for 5 mins to slightly brown the cheese. I used a regular sized metal pizza pan & substituted flour for wheat germ. The crust came out just the way I like, crispy on the bottom, not at all dry in the middle. I would definitely recommend prebaking the crust before adding toppings. This was the first time I’ve tried this. The top of the crust didn’t come out soggy from all the toppings. Prebaking it first gave the top time to crisp instead of soaking up the juice from the meat and veggies. From now on I will definitely prebake my crust. I’ve tried different pizza crust recipes and this is my favorite. The other recipes I found bland. I can’t quite put my finder on it, but this crust just really added to the enjoyment of the pizza. I think it was the honey. Without a doubt, the best recipe I’ve come across yet. One thing I will do differently next time, I will only use half the dough. My crust came out a little too thick for my liking 1.5cm or 0.6inches for the Americans (I measured). I strongly recommend this recipe!!
