Perfect Lemon Squares

Reviewed: May 9, 2012
Not your everyday lemon bars. Good, but I like a stronger lemon flavor. I also agree with other reviewers about the coconut. I like coconut, so included it, but I think it reduced the lemon flaver. I doubled the recipe and baked in a 9 x 13 pan. Worked well.

Sausage Casserole

Seemed like a lot of cheese, but the end result was very good. I ended up adding 2 eggs, about a tablespoonn of sour cream and a tablespoon of minced jalapeno.

Used the topping here, with some oats mixed in, on http://allrecipes.com/recipe/baked-fresh-cherry-pie/detail.aspx for an awesome Dutch Cherry Pie.

Baked Fresh Cherry Pie

Yum! I didn't have almond extract, but I added a little lemon zest and cinnamon to the cherry mixture, and used the topping from http://allrecipes.com/recipe/dutch-apple-berry-pie/detail.aspx . The Dutch Cherry Pie was delicious.

A holiday hit! Both church and work parties loved this. Good with a bit of rum, too!

Cream Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 26, 2003
I used this as the base in an ice cream cake (baked in a springform, topped w/ 1/2 gallon vanilla mixed with 1/2 package coconut and 1 pkg coconut pudding that had been combined with 1 1/2 c. milk - then iced). It was fairly dry, but that worked well as the ice cream melted. It froze well. I'll use it for this again, but probably not as a stand alone cake.

Famous Japanese Restaurant-Style Salad Dressing

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2003
Very good. I used Rice Vinegar instead of Rice Wine Vinegar (same??) and I used jarred minced ginger, but it turned out very well. Thanks to the reviewer who said not to waste time chopping. I threw in chunks of onion and whole garlic cloves - no problem. Next time I'll use 1/2 sesame oil.

Grandma Strait's Fudge

Not bad... IF you use powdered sugar. SIFTED powdered sugar. Otherwise you'll get little pellets. Good flavor. Not sure if I'll use again.

Butterscotch Pudding II

Very good, very easy. Rich. Requires a lot of stirring. I used an extra egg yolk (getting rid of yolks from angel food cake), and it set up nicely. Will use again.

Great - IF you really want a deep, dark chocolate pudding. I just made it as a pudding, instaed of as a filling. It set up nicely and tastes rich and delicious. I'll definately use this one again.

Portuguese Egg Pudding

Reviewed: Jul. 29, 2002
The texture of this was almost gummy. The caramel went to a hard crack stage before ever turning golden (I think this would be solved by 'browning' the sugar before adding the water). The only one who liked the sticky sweet flavor was my 2 yr old. I tried this recipe because I had a bunch of yolks left over after making an angel food cake. Next time, I'll just make a lot of pudding. Thanks for the tip about using a dish towel in a water bath, though.

Fabulous French Loaves

Reviewed: Jul. 3, 2001
The editor changed the original recipe a bit. I do it this way: after mixing all ingredients together, let rest 10 minutes (leaving spoon in batter). Stir vigorously, let rest another 10 minutes. Do this a total on 5 times instead of the traditional rising. After the 5th rest, turn onto a floured board and knead lightly (I barely knead at all). I then shape the loaves and continue as in the posted version of the recipe. When shaping the loaves, I will sometimes put a mixture of basil, oregano, garlic, butter/olive oil, and onion on it cinnamon roll style before rolling it for special, pretty garlic loaves.

Non-Edible Cinnamon Ornaments

Reviewed: Dec. 5, 2000
I KNEW this recipe would stain hands, countertop, rolling pin, etc... I was wrong. We were out of cloves, so I substituted a mix of allspice, mace, and ginger. Worked great and smelled delicious. The longer you knead the dough, the easier it was to work with. My kids and I (ages 5 & 7) made 29 ornament/gift ties from this recipe. Sand the edges after they dry to 'clean up' any rough spots.
