African-American/Nuyorican born and raised in East Harlem. Love my people, my cultures, love life. Christian, single, no kids. Into sophisticated things like Fashion, Fine Art, Music, Gourmet food & Culture. I love cooking, experimenting with flavor. Have an Associates degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management , Executive Kitchen Manager (a combo of administration & "Chefing") for up and coming Vegetarian restaurant in Brooklyn. Currently working at home helping the owner with menu development. Attends foodservice trade shows at least 2x a yr. Just went to the FANCY FOOD SHOW in NYC, it was great. I dont like mushrooms, okra or organ meat of any sort. I don't eat anything spicy or bland. I don't eat white bread or applesauce. I am picky, to a point.
My favorite things to cook
Beef, Chicken, pasta, rice, vegetables, desserts hot & cold. When I feel lazy, I throw together a deli sandwich or PB& J (Smooth peanut butter & Grape Jam) or nibble on whole wheat crackers.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well, in Puerto rican culture, around the holiday my mom roasts pork shoulder, yellow rice w/olives & vienna sausages. My grandmother (her mom) use to make "Pasteles"- Green banana turned into a dough and stuffed with chickpeas, aciete (annato oil)and pork bits. Yum as well as a ton of other stuff.
My cooking triumphs
Coconut rice( sort of Risotto style) with Plantain crusted shrimp I cooked for a class one night, it was gone before I had a plate for myself.
My cooking tragedies
Adding eggs to the pie crust of an apple pie, ugh.
