If you saute rice in butter/oil with garlic, ginger and onion before adding the liquid, it will not be bland. Add salt as well. I made this today and it was good. After reading some of the reviews I tweaked it a little. I always saute rice in oil, butter or ghee ( clarified butter) with onion, garlic and ginger before adding liquid. This time I wanted to stay somewhat true to the recipe so I didn't add ginger. I put couple drops of sesame oil. Only because the bottle was on the counter. I did add 1/2 cup of carrot and 1/4 cup of peas for color. It was very good. My picky daughter ate it as well. Next time I'll add chicken and a fragrant rice. Like jasmine or basmati rice.
