I have grown up on southern cooking, but with heart issues, now have to modify some of those recipes to meet my current health guidelines.
My favorite things to cook
I love casseroles and things that gather flavor by cooking together, plus they're easy. I also love to do a full gourmet meal from appetizer to soup, salad, entree, sides and a scrumptious dessert!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother lived with us from the time I was born and she cooked and baked from scratch, though she did have the forethought to write out a few of her best recipes. My mom was also an excellent cook, and I learned a lot from her about making good dinners that were reasonably economical and also good use of leftovers. My dad was the cake baker in our family and every birthday cake was lovingly baked and beautifully decorated by him. My husband got into cooking and loves to try new recipes, seems to always pick things that require new (expensive!!) ingredients, but I enjoy the results, even though it seems like he dirties every pan in our kitchen, haha! I shouldn't complain!
My cooking triumphs
A fantastic chocolate cheesecake that is still talked about and several wonderful dinner parties with friends and family.
My cooking tragedies
There is not enough room to write them all. Biscuits that my husband thought were intended to be hockey pucks since the baking powder was no longer active, lumpy gravy that wouldn't thicken, overcooked beef roast, I could go on. Fortunately, they are intersperced with successes so that I keep on trying!
