My grandmother came to visit me when I was in Spain about to have my youngest daugther. I was about to deliver and was craving my grandma's Ostkaka. It was hard to find the ingredients we were used to in Chicago so we had to improvise. For years we would buy cream cheese and push it through a MORE

We had store bought potato and onion perogies, ground beef and bok choy for dinner. Simple but we had canning to do!! So after icing our cukes for 7 hours it was time to can them! We got jars washed and sterilized. Lids were in water, brine was boiling away.. all the garlic was peeled and split. MORE

About Me
I am a single mom of 4.. to make matters more interesting, 3 are teenagers. I have been in the Navy for 19+ years and I retire in Feb. We have lived around the world and have picked up interesting recipes from our friends. I enjoy cooking and now after a long break from all my deployments to Afghanistan, I can start cooking again :P Feel free to email me at nvyrcrtr2@aol.com Tina
My favorite things to cook
Artisan Bread, fresh veggies, new recipes and anything that makes my kids go "Wow mom! This is awesome!!"
My favorite family cooking traditions
Making Christmas cookies.... We are still coming up with new traditions because we have traveled so much and I have been deployed so much it's been hard to do solid traditions..
My cooking triumphs
Making an apple goody (or cobbler) in a dutch over while camping. It was not a true cobbler because for the topping I used cinnamon roll instant Oatmeal but for camping food, it was awesome! I also love coming home to bbq pulled beed in the slow cooker after a long cold day at work..
My cooking tragedies
I have two but one is a regret.. While camping I tried to make a roast and I was not doing well, it was not heating through all the way. It was raining and kids were starving. So I took it out, cut everything up in cubes and added water. It became Mom's Opps Stew and they say it was best I ever made.. amazing what cold hungry kids love :D My regret which has been a tragedy to me.. not learning from my grandma how to make her southern biscuits. She would add buttermilk to a mound of flour but I don't know anything else. Not getting recipes from my grandmothers before they passes away was my biggest tragedy.. because kids were not able to enjoy things from my childhood. I am always searching for recipe that bring that back... hard cause my one grandma was Swedish :P But I have made cardamon rolls that made kids drool :D
