On to better things!
About this Cook
I'm a nurse in a mid-sized Kansas town where even "fancy" restaurants serve chicken fried steak and hamburgers - yikes! My cooking background is German-Russian Mennonite - things like verneke, zwiebach, and snickerdoodles. Ten years ago, I spent two semesters in England where I was introduced to curry and I've been in love with Asian/Indian food ever since. I love trying new things and improving on old favorites. My view on food is that God made it for us to enjoy and we better do our best with what He has given us. Best wishes to all the cooks and bakers out there!
My favorite things to cook
Everything except red beets!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Skillet suppers with food from the garden. My mom doesn't love experimenting with food the way I do, but she is a big gardener. Can't wait for fresh tomatoes and sweet corn every year!
My cooking triumphs
Pumpkin soup and shrimp scampi are two things I've done really well in the past. I'm pretty good at bread as well.
My cooking tragedies
Adding sweetened condensed milk instead of evaporated to the Mexican casserole - bleh.

Boudreaux's Zydeco Stomp Gumbo
Num, num! This recipe was the first time I have ever tried gumbo or Cajun food. I made it twice because a friend of mine who lived in Louisiana for a while asked me to make her some more :) The main change I made the second time was less oil in the roux - I cut it to 1/2 cup. The flavor was as good or better and I didn't have to skim a ton of oil off the top. I had to use dried red chiles, but it still tasted great!

White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake
The white chocolate chips added such a unique flavor and texture I never would have expected. This recipe was not as difficult as it sounds either. Yum!
