Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Mar. 6, 2014
This may be the best apple pie I've ever had, and I've made lots of apple pies over the last 50 years. Why not 5 stars? It really needs some spice. I added cinnamon, cardamon and a bit of nutmeg. I served it at a family dinner and everyone agreed it was wonderful. A WORD OF WARNING: be sure to put something under the pie to catch the bit that will cook out. I knew better, I just forgot. The syrup that cooked out filled my kitchen with smoke, set off the smoke alarm and after 4 cleanings I still haven't gotten all the burned-on residue off the floor of my oven. Not the fault of the recipe--my own carelessness. I'll be making this again, and soon. I'll just be more careful next time.

Banana Sour Cream Bread

Reviewed: Aug. 30, 2013
After reading all those 5 star reviews I can hardly believe we were using the same recipe. I thought 300 degrees was too low to properly cook this bread, but I followed the recipe exactly. It was very heavy and dense, and I had to increase the baking time by an additional 35 minutes to get it done. I liked the idea of the sour cream and banana together, but I won't be making this recipe again.

Easy Arugula Salad

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2012
These flavors are great together. I shaved the parmesan with a vegetable peeler instead of grating it, but other than that I used the recipe exactly. Easy, tasty and beautiful.

Baked Buffalo Wings

Reviewed: Aug. 29, 2012
I thought I'd made enough to have some for lunch the next day, but my husband and I ate all 20 of the wings. I followed the recipe exactly and they were very crispy in 45 minutes. Following the advice of other reviewers, I dried them thoroughly before coating with the flour. Next time I'll reduce the butter and hot sauce by 50%. You just don't need nearly that much.

Ukrainian Red Borscht Soup

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2012
I'd never tasted borscht before making this. I don't know if it's authentic or not, but it is absolutely delicious! I wish I'd discovered this recipe years ago. I didn't have bulk sausage on hand, so I diced Polish sausage, browned it slightly, and then followed the recipe exactly. I froze the leftovers and they're equally good. Thanks for sharing this recipe, Patti. I'll be making this one again and again.

Penne with Chicken and Asparagus

I followed the recipe exactly and it was a big hit. Quick and simple to make, but very flavorful. I'll definitely make this again.

Carole's Sesame Chicken Salad

Reviewed: Aug. 25, 2011
My family loves this chicken salad. I came across the recipe several years ago looking for something different to make with leftover baked chicken. I follow the recipe exactly, I can't imagine any changes that would make it better. Thanks, Carole, for creating and sharing this recipe.

Easy Ham and Noodles

Reviewed: Jan. 26, 2011
My husband and I both loved this; and it's so incredibly easy! Based on a couple of other reviewers, I sauteed some diced onion and added, but I think this recipe would have been a "5" on it's own.

Sweet Potato Pie I

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2010
This is the best sweet potato pie I've ever eaten. I followed the recipe as written except that I added 1/2 t. of salt. This recipe is very similar to every sweet potato pie I've ever baked, but it's just so much better! This will be the standard in our house. Thanks for sharing it COUGAAR.

Cabbage Rolls II

Reviewed: May 25, 2010
Really good. Based on other reiews I cut back on the pepper a bit. I don't have a slow cooker so I covered them with foil and baked at 350 for about an hour. These are a great "make ahead" dish. I prepared them several hours before cooking, just covered them with foil and into the fridge.

Ham Salad Spread

Reviewed: Apr. 17, 2010
Such a simple recipe, with ingredients most people have on hand, but it's absolutely delicious. I made it exactly as directed and I won't tweak it even a little bit the next time I make it.

Roasted Beets and Sauteed Beet Greens

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2010
This is really good. I thought the only way beets were good was if they were pickled. I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out great.

Homemade Crispy Seasoned French Fries

Reviewed: Jan. 23, 2010
I added about 1/4 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning and a dash of cayenne along with the spices listed. We loved them. I'd been looking for a crispy, battered french fry recipe for a long time. This is the best one I've tried. I'll definitely make these again.

Onion Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Reviewed: Nov. 27, 2009
My family loved these. I was looking for a sweet potato side dish that was savory rather than the typical marshmallow topped. Based on other revewiers suggestions I lowered the temp to 350 and cooked them for about 30 minutes. A definite "do again" recipe.
