My mother never let anyone in her kitchen. She was a GREAT cook but just couldn't stand people "under her feet". The mystery of all the wonderful flavors she presented to family and friends fascinated me. So, around age 10, and when mom allowed, I'd hijack her kitchen. I collected and read every cookbook I could find and routinely treated friends to my experiments for their review. In my 20's, I landed a job as a cook in a small (Greek) family owned restaurant in upstate NY. What a learning experience! All the basics were put to the test. My passion for creating flavorful foods grew, although the restaurant business left much to be desired. Still, I've opened my pallet to all cuisines and now thoroughly enjoy creating wonderful meals for my family and entertaining with friends on special occasions and various events. I was thrilled to find the Allrecipes.com website, as I feel the very best recipes come from kitchens with generations of history and a true passion for cooking.
My favorite things to cook
Anything Italian or Mediterranean, and Southern-Down-Home cookin!
My favorite family cooking traditions
As with most family's, I think Thanksgiving and Christmas seem to hold the most opportunity for "traditions" in our household. There are specific treats and meals that my family EXPECTS to have available to them every year. Several of the recipes we use for special occassions have been handed down through 4+ generations. The rich ingredients and aroma that consumes the entire house adds to the warmth and holiday spirits.
My cooking triumphs
Being able to cook as well as my mom! I remember so many occassions where friends would anxiously wait for the invitation to one of my mothers incredible meals. I think she'd be proud of the skills I've acquired and the traditions I've continued.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I ever tried to cook an Asian based meal...without a recipe. YUCK! Wouldn't even let the dogs try it! Threw the entire thing out. Since then, I've successfully tackled and love the cuisine.
