I began cooking as a new bride over 30 years ago, knowing only how to make spaghetti sauce! My husband put up with all my cooking attempts and now says he'd rather eat at home than go to any restaurant. We have two grown children living here in the south near us. I operated a child care center for over 16 years where my staff and myself prepared lunch daily for 30 children. The parents were always amazed at some of the foods their children would eat for me but not eat at home. I've always tried to make meals fun...our motto is family, food and fun!
My favorite things to cook
When my daughter got engaged I began taking cake decorating classes from an amazing baker from South America. Practice makes perfect, and I think all of my friends and family were getting tired of cakes!! I love coming up with new flavor combinations. So far I have made 2 wedding cakes and over 200 cupcakes for my daughter's wedding. I will doing my third wedding in October 2011. I also love making recipes that have been handed down from my mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. All three of these women were wonderful cooks and great role models as wives.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I hope I am starting a tradition of making the wedding cakes for all the young women in our family. I have way too many "family tradition" recipes that I enjoy making to list!
My cooking triumphs
My biggest triumph was making the wedding cake for my niece's wedding and the wedding cake and cupcakes for my daughter's wedding. I enjoy creating home cooked meals every night even though it is now just my husband and myself at home.
My cooking tragedies
The first time I tried to make beef stew, as a newly married woman, it was a disaster! I couldn't get it to thicken so kept adding rice thinking that would help. The meat was so tough it needed to be cut with a steak knife. Recently I attempted to make a seafood paella (something one of my husband's Vietnamese employees asked for) and it was awful!! I generally try to avoid dishes with rice!
