Happy New Year!

For Christmas this year my boyfriend got me a set of 50 cookie cutters in animal shapes. I have been dying to use them, because they are so cute. I was planning on making a themed set of cookies that I could decorate and put on a plate in some kind of scene – like Under the Sea on a blue plate with waves made of icing or something. However, after polling my friends to see what group of animals they liked best, the answer was overwhelmingly DINOSAURS (my friends are like a bunch of five year old boys). So, for New Years, I made dinosaur cookies using my Pterodactyl, Stegosaurus, T-Rex, and Brontosaurus cookie cutters.

I’d never made sugar cookies before today because I didn’t have cookie cutters. I also don’t have one of those icing sets, so I just put the icing in plastic baggies and snipped the corners off. I used The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies and Sugar Cookie Frosting. They turned out GREAT – most of them, at least. My decorating skills leave much to be desired so some of them look a little creepy and some are very smudged. However, I figure it’s the thought that counts – I hope everyone loves them at the party tonight!!

The first time I used my cookie cutter was the day before yesterday – I made biscuits to go with our dinner stew and used the T-Rex cutter to make them into shapes. Of course, they didn’t hold their shape after rising while baking, and I knew they wouldn’t, but I wanted to use them because they were new :) My boyfriend loved the idea so much he used jam to draw a dinosaur on his biscuit. Anyways, I’m happy I got to finally use them and even though decorating took FOREVER it was lots of fun and I can’t wait to make sugar cookies again!!

Thanks to everyone on the recipe exchange for answering my questions about sugar cookies :) Let me know in the comments which one of the dinosaurs is your favourite – they’re all different :)

Have a very happy, safe, and fun new years, everybody!!!

What a great gift for a baker! Lucky girl:) The cookies are just the cutest and who doesn't love to eat the head off a T Rex? I saw some cookie cutters and I should have snagged them:( Next time. Happy New Decade, Patty

I love cookie cutters. They are so much fun! I used to collect them on vacations - just one neat cutter. Now my daughters collect and use them for me. We had snowflake cookies for New Year's. Your baggie tool is perfect. I had some plastic ones and some canvas ones that needed to be washed, but no matter how well you try to clean them, they are never really perfect. They do sell some disposable bags that fit over decorator tips. Start looking at yard sales for sets of tips and other baking stuff.

About Me
I'm a 22 year old novice cook - I live with my boyfriend in a small apartment with a teeny kitchen. Right now I'm trying to eat healthier and cut some meat out of my diet - I'm writing a blog about cooking my way through a vegetarian cookbook! I love trying new recipes, and adjusting them to suit my tastes.
My favorite things to cook
I love BBQing, making casseroles, and putting together any kind of soup. I'm also trying to get into baking - my kitchen is tiny so I have to use simple recipes, but I love making muffins and cookies to share.
My favorite family cooking traditions
When I was little my mom taught me how to make brown sugar syrup for our homemade pancakes - everytime she made pancakes at home, I would make the sauce to go with them.
My cooking triumphs
Lasagna Day - My first ever dinner party in my apartment, I made spinach salad, stuffed mushrooms, lasagna from scratch, and apple crisp. It was a hit with my friends, I got so many compliments!
My cooking tragedies
When I was in high school I decided to make some cinnamon buns, but the only recipe I could find was a huge batch, so I cut it in half. However, when I went to mix the ingredients, I found myself adding the full amount of some but only half of others, and I couldn't remember how much of each I'd already done. I tried cooking them anyways, but they were terrible!
