The Middle of the Midwest Roundup is Done!!

tyle="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">June 23rd was the last day for food and fun for the Midwest Roundup gang.  Can I say the yard and gardens were weed free?  Nope.  Can I say the house was perfectly clean and decorated?  Uh huh.  Can I say that everyone that wanted to come, made it?  'Fraid not.  But what I can say is the people that came once again made it a fantastic weekend!  tyle="font-family:Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif">Good food and laughter filled conversations were the norm.  I might add the food was even served on time.

Friday night hot wings, Ryan's Reverse Popper dip, Baking Nana's http://allrecipes.com/personalrecipe/63616340/south-of-the-border-shrimp-gazpacho/detail.< aspx (with a couple of tweaks from me), my infamous cheezy crackers, guacamole and Mike's addictive snack mix rounded out the appetizers served to Pattycakes and her DH, Mike & Linda Harvey, Magnolia Blossom, and Mi Being Mi .

Ah yes, and one other person.  After my surprise visitor last year, I was indeed rather suspicious about another "Julie" being pulled this year.  I even asked if I was getting another surprise guest.  Unfortunately, I asked the "PIC" (partner in crime) of said guest.  When my first car load arrived I happily greeted them in the driveway.  They had hidden their stowaway behind one of the bushes in the drive.  We proceeded into the house and I received a text.  Now this person had mailed goodies( some really awesome cookies!) here and had been texting me all day with photos of her lovely grandbaby.  Note to anyone wishing to make a grand surprise entrance these 2 methods work quite well to divert suspicion.  When I received one last text from her my jaw dropped again.  Mr. Harvey swears the only thing he has seen open wider is an anaconda.  Humf!  My husband was rather startled because I went right for the front  door cause I knew she wasn't behind me!

Yep, x-raybarb/gammaray, pulled a Julie.  After much hugging, laughing and a little catching up, the cancer walkers set off for their relay.  Pattycakes and her DH stayed behind and visited us for the evening.  What a delightful couple!  I am so glad they could make it.

Sat. was our big lunch filled with The BBQ dude's wonderful BBQ.  Can't you almost smell that now?  We rounded out our meal with coleslaw, "What's for dinner, Mom?" excellent soft & fluffy hamburger buns ( I just love those, they always turn out perfect) and Mi's Killer baked beans.

Pattycake's DH and Alan hit it off and keep a lively conversation going.  My child is accidentally in orange too.  He'd gone to work that morning but made it back for lunch.

The ladies had their own lively conversations while waiting for it to cool off for a tour of the gardens.  Bane the cranky dog is keeping watch.

Later in the evening my DS rode the horses down to visit.

Pattycakes, I hope you show your DH this photo.  Joe is happily licking MB's hand to make sure he got all the treats!  No teeth!

Even though some of us stayed up into the wee hours chatting, while others chose to get some sleep, breakfast Sunday morning was served on time!

Cinnamon rolls, sourdough English muffins, quiche courtesy of my girls, bacon, cantaloupe and fruit juice from my orchard made for quite a nice spread.  Mr. Harvey even learned that cold brewed coffee is quite tasty!

Again this year we had a lovely time meeting new people and seeing old friends.  The conversation, food and laughter flowed.  And yes, there were presents.

For those that sent things, thank you.  Julie, your spice rub smells so good and thank you for the gift bags.  Lady Sparkle, can't wait to try out those wine bags.  Barb, loving those cookies!

For my hostess gifts, thank you very much.  I love that cat bottle of wine!  Pattycakes, thank you for the books.  Barb, the towels and apron are really cute.  Mi, thanks for your wine bags and making the sangria!  Magnolia Blossom didn't get a "faux toe" of yours, LOL, I'm gonna get you and Barbie girl!

Sadly enough the weekend had to come to an end.  Even sadder the next day I got to go pick up 160 bales of hay for the pasture pigs.  Mi's sangria helped after my poor BBQ dude and I got all the hay home.

For those of you that couldn't come, we missed you and we are sorry you didn't make it.

Never fear!

Barring Life getting in the way, a date has already been set.  Yep, once again I will host the 5th annual Middle of the Midwest Roundup the first weekend in June!  So for those of you that said "maybe next year", here's your chance!

Till next year!

One of these days, I will make it! Sounds like too much "good times" to miss!

Jun. 25, 2013 9:30 am
I've been anxiously awaiting this blog! Patty kept me informed about the food as the trip progressed, but I wanted to see faces too! Once again, you proved yourself a great hostess. I know Patty and Carlos had a wonderful time and I'm sure everyone else did too.

Jun. 25, 2013 9:40 am
It looks and sounds like you guys had a blast! I AM going to make it to one of your round-ups - I swear! Cat - my kitchen/dining room is almost the same color as yours! Your son is quite the good looking young man and that horse is beautiful! And, wow, Mike Harvey sure gets around as I saw he was at the Buckeye Bash the week prior!

Jun. 25, 2013 9:48 am
What a great weekend! One of these days I will make it. I can't believe that Barb managed to pull this off. Hilarious! "Look behind you Cat!" Absolutely perfect!

Jun. 25, 2013 10:00 am
Bibi, you have the possibility of next year ;)

Jun. 25, 2013 10:03 am
BigShotsMom, I'm lucky it rained today or you'd still be waiting! Patty told me she was keeping you informed with the food! Yeah, I served on time this year, all 3 meals!! Carlos and my DH sure hit it off. they are such a fun couple to talk to!

Jun. 25, 2013 10:05 am
Mother Ann, we actually discussed the dates of the roundup and which would be better. You know you can always come this way for the wine trail when it is convenient for you. Yes, that Mike sure does get around. LOL!

Jun. 25, 2013 10:07 am
Baking Nana, Barbie girl is as skilled as Julie. She kept sending me photos that would make me think she was in AZ with the grandbaby. Which she was just not when she said! LOLOL! You have a year.....

Jun. 25, 2013 10:58 am
Oh Cat! What changes did you make to the Shrimp Gazpacho?

It looks like you all had a blast! I would have loved to have been there. I'm so glad Barb surprised you. She's a hoot. Thanks for sharing!

Jun. 25, 2013 12:10 pm
Well, you know how it goes if you don't have everything. I didn't have the avocado or that sponsor's sauce or the clamato and I didn't use near as much cilantro. I had everything else so I winged it. I used V-8 with a little clam juice (I make crab chowder with it). For a bit of kick which I figure comes from that sauce, several drops of Tabasco. The jalapeno needed to be better seeded because I about choked Barb with the spice from it. I made the recipe right the first time and loved it so.... I told everyone mine was based on yours. They accused me of having a tweaking problem after they heard I tweaked the smoked turkey recipe too!

Jun. 25, 2013 12:12 pm
Deb C., don't ever play poker with these people! Barb was quite convincing about where she was and where she wasn't. It was great seeing her and at least this time I recognized my surprise visitor instead of taking a few to get it.

Jun. 25, 2013 12:57 pm
Sounds like it was a really fun and lively group and how fun to be surprised by Barb! The BBQ looked amazing! Could smell it out here! So happy it was a great success, I know it was a labor of love in your preparation and it showed. Fifty weeks till the fun begins again! :D

Jun. 25, 2013 1:36 pm
I had a blast, as usual, Cat. I want to thank you for your lovely gifts, as well. I'm glad you and BBQ Dude are enjoying the sangria. Oh, and I can't take total credit for making that or my beans, cuz I had help from Magnolia Blossom and Mrs. Mike. It sure was nice seeing old faces and meeting new ones!

Jun. 25, 2013 1:39 pm
mickdee, I know! So much to do and so little time :) It was a blast!! For everything that didn't get done on my list, not one person seemed to care or notice and we had such fun!

Jun. 25, 2013 1:41 pm
Mi, we have had a blast since the very beginning haven't we? Just love Mrs. Mike! Especially that snort that came from the kitchen after a particular comment. The orchard should start getting ripe around Sept. and a day trip here can easily be arranged ;)

I missed a good time yet again, I see. I'm glad y'all had so much fun together. How come no pics of the garden when you KNOW how much I like seeing them? Even though I get jealous as all heck! :o)

Jun. 25, 2013 1:43 pm
cheepchick, uh hum good question. Maybe someone else took some and will post a blog. You know you could plan on coming in person next year to see them ;)

Jun. 25, 2013 2:47 pm
It looks like you all had so much fun! I'm green with envy, as usual! One of these days..... Thanks for all the photos! I remember Barb telling me she was going to go, but then I forgot about it totally! So that was a great surprise!

Jun. 25, 2013 4:24 pm
That makes for 2 of us, Marianne! You have a year to think about coming here :)

Jun. 25, 2013 7:38 pm
MiBeingMi-watch it when you talk about old faces, I resemble that remark. Had a great time. Happy to be Barb's partner in crime. Loved seeing pattycakes and her DH. Great traveling companions in Mike and Mrs. Mike. Last, our beloved hostess, can't wait to see you again. Are you saying there were things that didn't get done? No one saw anything but you, the food, and the beautiful flowers.

Jun. 25, 2013 8:20 pm
I've been waiting for your blog Cat! I knew everything would be wonderful! Your BBQ is so amazing and Mi's beans are to die for. But, the best part is getting to visit with all the super AR Peeps! And, What a great surprise for you ...AGAIN! Look out. It just might become a tradition surprising Cat. LOL! Love your blog, love your pics and love YOU!

Jun. 25, 2013 8:25 pm
SO HAPPY to have gotten a chance to visit you All, makes my heart sing with Joy getting to meet new friends and seeing old ones too!! Especially when you turn around and find one that lives in the Same county that you DO!! LOL Way to go Barb! Carlos had a wonderful time! ! THANK YOU THANK YOU Cat! Btw, I have fallen in Love with Linda's Coach purse, fingers crossed for that job promotion of mine. If I get it, I'm rewarding myself with a trip to the Coach outlet in L.A.!!

Jun. 25, 2013 9:29 pm
Oh, there was one other thing we did notice. Your new outdoor kitchen. Woohoo, next year, your outdoor pizza oven.

Jun. 25, 2013 9:53 pm
Oh....I was so there in spirit. Got the biggest kick out of the text from Barb saying she had just pulled a Julie. LOVED it! PS I was in on it for months and I kept my mouth shut too :) Maybe next June.....Love to you!

Jun. 26, 2013 2:24 am
Sounds like a great time was had by all. One of these times. The photos are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Jun. 26, 2013 4:18 am
Magnolia Blossom, you guys are great at only seeing the good stuff here but you know what? This year, for once,no one had to help set up and YOU didn't have to touch the mop or vacuum. I can't believe I forgot to include a photo of the BBQ Dude's kitchen. He worked really hard on that to get that much done for you guys to see.

Jun. 26, 2013 4:26 am
Oh Candice! I so wish you had been here. You were missed! Surprising Cat a tradition, well, they are fun but Mike no more anaconda jokes! Love you too, Candice! So hope to see you next year!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:30 am
mauigirl, I would so not play poker with you people! Barb was pretty clever saying she couldn't come because she was going to see the grandbaby and then sending photos of the little sweetie showing how their day was going. Just because it was the day before. Loved the "faux toes" of you gals with your cocktails joining us in spirit! Maybe next year you all can come!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:34 am
XOXO ((((HUGS from FLORIDA))) Arf! Arf! from Marley....Miss you guys!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:39 am
Patty Cakes, sorry again I misspelled your name. Head smack! I am so glad you and Carlos enjoyed your time here. It was such fun meeting you two and spending time with you Friday evening. Loving that Tequila too can't believe I missed mentioning that in the blog. Another head smack!! Again I am so glad you came!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:39 am
And good luck with that promotion!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:41 am
Hey Cindy! Unlike some of the other AR peeps, I have never gotten to meet you. Almost that one year. Maybe you and cheepchick could surprise me next year ;)!

Jun. 26, 2013 4:44 am
manella, I thought I got more photos to share with everyone. We did have a good time! It seems no matter what happens or what doesn't get done we always have laughter and good food!

Jun. 26, 2013 5:00 am
Awwwwww Cat, I was with you all in spirit and will be there next year, even if I have to pack myself in a box and come by Fed Ex or UPS! Nice blog, great faux toes too!

Jun. 26, 2013 5:43 am
It was a wonderful, fun time, Cat! We will hold these memories a long time as one of our most favorite activities. As for that cold brewed coffee? I know I had heard of it but I never paid much attention. Now, I'll be shopping for one of those French press things. I'll keep my Keurig, though, because I like the morning two or three kicks in the butt that it gives me.

Jun. 26, 2013 6:39 am
Lucky Noodles, we loved the "faux toe" of you sitting in the garden with your cocktail! I do hope you can come next year! I just know you would have a great time!

Jun. 26, 2013 6:41 am
Mike, Bed, Bath and Beyond carries them. I hear those Keurig's are pretty nice but I will never let go of my French press! I'm so glad you and your lovely wife came this year. I hope next year works out so you can come again!

Jun. 26, 2013 6:51 am
I have a plan. If I croak before then, I'll arrange to be dug up and taken to your round up.

Jun. 26, 2013 7:42 am
Cat Hill-thanks for sharing your great time sharing laughter and food with friends. I enjoyed looking at the photos. It is nice to put faces with names.

Jun. 26, 2013 7:44 am
So sad to have missed this!!! Looks like SUCH a good time ( and the food looks fantastic!! ) I am up for next year! Lee, maybe we can travel together and save Mike and Linda the miles into Indiana? I WAS thinking of all of you all weekend. Knew it would be a success, as usual! :) XOXOXO

Jun. 26, 2013 8:16 am
Mr. Harvey! Even though I am laughing because I can see you doing that just to spite Mags, that is not even funny! I want you here healthy and full of it!!

Jun. 26, 2013 8:17 am
Lela, you are welcome! You know if you are ever this way.....

Jun. 26, 2013 8:20 am
LadySparkle, I was just thinking about you! I want to try out my new wine bag but I am not getting out in this lovely heat wave we are having. I also was wondering about that, if you and Lee could travel together. We have a year to make plans!!

Jun. 26, 2013 10:18 am
Awesome. Really enjoyed the photos also! (btw, when you 'click' onto a photo, it enlarges each one! Very nice!)...

Jun. 26, 2013 10:55 am
Aren't we glad we get chances to meet and greet each other? I'm so glad your roundup was such a blast! Maybe next year...

Jun. 26, 2013 12:32 pm
Sue, glad you liked it! I do my blogs in blogger so you can see the photos bigger. Too bad I didn't get more. I would have sworn that I had!

Jun. 26, 2013 12:39 pm
midwestchef, I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I have met so many wonderful people here on AR that I would hate to lose any of them. It is great fun to put a voice and a face to the words you see typed. You all in the upper eastern part of the Midwest should be worried cause in the wee hours of the morning it was discussed amongst us about traveling to see your gang! Maybe next year :)

Jun. 30, 2013 8:55 pm
THANK YOU for cropping that shot =D Now I need to go back and read the whole thing (= HATED to leave! Cried driving to the airport {= Miss you, like the dickens! LOVE the picture of my text =D

Jun. 30, 2013 10:07 pm
YOU, my dear Cat, need to clean your glasses! EVERYthing was bee-you-tee-ful! The house, the gardens - my wonderful friends! The food was SO good! I ate things that I normally don't like - and went back for seconds (= So great to see old friends and meet new friends. Wonderful to HUG special friends for the first time =D Always remember - when you least expect it, "Look behind you!" =D

Jun. 30, 2013 10:08 pm
And, STILL LOVING the picture of miniMI and your egg =D

Jul. 1, 2013 5:06 am
She is such a cutie! I'm glad you came. I'm still eating your cookies. Love those Florentines! I still need to get the stuff to try your "cookie crumbs" in ice cream. May have make a special trip to the store so we can have ice cream on the 4th!

Jul. 1, 2013 5:09 am
"Look behind you" only it was in front for me :)

Jul. 1, 2013 7:08 am
M'lady Cat, I'll be going into town, in a couple of days, and I'll be buying one of those Frenchie Presses. I'm still savoring my first sip from your press. Also, I'm still savoring those cheesy crackers. I was very tempted to steal the whole bowl of them for myself. They are sure surely the best cracker I have ever tasted! Thank you for giving us the recipe! Next year, they'll be included in my snack mix! That would be duplicating your efforts, though. ... We had such a good time at The Farm House in Plattsburg, too, even though our time there was limited. It was amazing to see all those AR folks, who seldom see each other, working together in the kitchen making Mi's Baked Beans. I could only help by keeping out of the way.

Jul. 1, 2013 9:18 am
Mr. Harvey. I was just thinking about you and Linda. I'm telling you the French press is the only way I want to have coffee anymore. I took mine to St Louis with me double bubble wrapped! I'm glad you like those crackers. It took me a while to get them perfected which reminds me I forgot to show you my collection of flavored vodkas. I'm really glad the Farm House worked out so well. I figured those people must be doing something right since they felt the need to add another rental. The other blogs should be up today.

Jul. 1, 2013 9:40 am
OMGarsh, Mike! I told Cat we should put some of her crackers in your mix!!!!!

Jul. 1, 2013 9:42 am
By the way, Cat! I was thinking of you Saturday! But you'll have to wait to find out exactly why - hehehe!

Jul. 1, 2013 10:03 am
Gammaray, if I knew I could have had a cohort, we (not me) could have dumped them into the mix! We'd call it "M'lady's Snack Mix" and (maybe?) have stayed out of mortal danger!

Jul. 1, 2013 10:53 am
I see a new recipe in the works (=

Jul. 1, 2013 10:55 am
That house was gorgeous! I can't believe we didn't get any pictures! And, speaking of pictures - Mike, I'm waiting for a blackmail letter (=

Jul. 1, 2013 11:24 am
When it comes, I'll have to move to a remote mountaintop in Mongolia because I just don't have enough money to avoid the ridicule I will face! Maybe, Mags will have mercy? yeah, right! Maybe the AR censors will take it down and banish her for life! Yeah, right! Dream on self! Dream on!

Jul. 1, 2013 11:27 am
Here's the web page of the house. Copy/paste these into your photo collection. ... http://www.downeyhouserental.com/Properties/TheFarmHouse.htm

Jul. 1, 2013 5:53 pm
How funny! I just searched and searched that wonderful World Wide Web, trying to track down that link (= I found Downey House - and, personally, ours was prettier (= Not sure what my PIC has on you - but I do know that you have an I criminal ing picture of ME! Cat does, too - but was kind enough to edit it before posting =D ~whew!~

Jul. 1, 2013 7:12 pm
Uh Oh! I think I spoke too soon! My worrysome pic is ... I a8in't gonna tell! ... Hmmmm. I guess I should see what I have! I don't remember anything that is not appropriate or less than acceptable.

Jul. 1, 2013 7:23 pm
We did talk about those flavored vodkas, Cat. but I don't remember how to use them. It does seem you said they should get by those temperamental tasters of mine. I remember the blog you wrote so I'll go through them and refresh myself.

Jul. 1, 2013 7:31 pm
Good grief! Maybe I should proof read! "Incriminating!" And, I am certainly NOT going to remind you, any more (=

Jul. 1, 2013 7:53 pm
Dang, here I have been hunting for the 2 blogs someone is supposed to have gotten up. Yes, she works for a living but still. Sorry you 2 didn't mean to ignore you. Oh heavens, I can't even guess in your case Barb! I'm gonna get you guys! Just you wait! Mike, I meant to do a blog about the flavored vodkas. Tell my weeds to stop growing and I will get right on it!

Jul. 1, 2013 7:55 pm
Those crackers really are pretty good. Can you leave out those nuts or sub them for something I'm not sensitive too? I really do like that mix you make, Mike!

Jul. 1, 2013 7:55 pm
I found something! Unless you really get me PO'd, I would never publish it! In fact, I'll delete it. I don't know how you knew I have it.

Jul. 1, 2013 8:02 pm
Cat, I'll take out the nuts. I saw some new stuff in the store where I get a few of the ingredients.

Jul. 2, 2013 12:43 am
I was waiting to see the caption! (=

Jul. 2, 2013 5:15 am
Mike, your snack mix is so good I eat it anyway and then regret it later. Could you maybe change the nuts for here. Peanuts maybe?

Jul. 2, 2013 6:12 am
Cat, When I made the recipe, I didn't want to use ingredients that were sold at any candy counter, nor have an ingredient that could cause Anaphylactic shock, so peanuts were out. (Even the Chex came from a health food store.) I'm thinking Macadamia and/or Filberts. I am open for other ideas if there is something you would prefer. I'm thinking of a completely unexpected ingredient, too. I'll have to try it in a very small batch, though.

Jul. 2, 2013 6:15 am
Gammaray, I'm waiting for that caption, too. Making it work on a family site is tricky, so maybe it won't work.

Jul. 2, 2013 8:12 am
LOL!

Jul. 2, 2013 9:16 am
Cashews, pistachios, almonds they don't bother me. Pumpkin seeds or sunflower might be a good sub, what do you think?

Jul. 2, 2013 9:28 am
Pumpkin seeds! Great idea, Cat! Cashews could work, too! Sunflower seeds are probably too small. Pistachios may be an allergy problem to some.

Jul. 2, 2013 12:37 pm
Dang there are too many allergies to things! I like pumpkin seeds and they are good for you. I thought about the sunflower seeds being too small but I like them anyway! You have a year to come up with perfection :)

Jul. 2, 2013 12:44 pm
No, Cat. I have five months. My family has demanded the snack mix for the holidays and they want plenty to take home when they leave. My grocery list for Shipshewanna just keeps growing. I'll have to take my truck on the next trip! ;)

Jul. 2, 2013 12:45 pm
Of course, I may be able to roast my own pumpkin seeds in the fall. Maybe add my own special twist to the flavor. Hmmmm.

Jul. 2, 2013 2:17 pm
Just keep him distracted, Cat (= And, Mike, isn't your family your guinea pigs? (=

Jul. 2, 2013 7:26 pm
I'm beginning to think that session after we were sent home was the beginning of a conspiracy of some kind. Keep me distracted? Hmph! ... No. I do not use my family as Guinea pigs. Blind taste tests? If my definition counts then, yes.

Jul. 3, 2013 5:47 am
Us conspire? Never ;)

Jul. 3, 2013 7:18 pm
LOL! So, Mike - maybe Mrs Mike is in on "it," too . . . ?!

Jul. 3, 2013 7:18 pm
;)

Jul. 3, 2013 7:18 pm
=D

Jul. 7, 2013 12:02 pm
Ohhh I am so sad to have missed this. It sounds like you had a wonderful time. I would have loved seeing old friends and meeting new but there is always next year.

Jul. 8, 2013 5:02 am
Yes, Soup Loving Nicole, there is next year! And everyone that does come would love to see you here! Hope you can come!

About Me
I live in the middle of the U.S. in a farming communtiy. Gardening, reading and cooking are the things you'll mostly find me doing. I also enjoy horseback riding & my many pets. A husband & teen, I have 1 of each.
My favorite things to cook
Bread & BBQ are 2 of my favorite things to cook. I do enjoy a food challenge. Last year it was curing my own brisket for Corned beef & pastrami & porkloin for Canadian bacon. This year sausages & scratch cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Bread and brittle. I learned to bake bread with my Mom. It was her favorite thing to make. My Aunt made the best peanut brittle ever. She'd stopped making it in the later years but when I told her how much I enjoyed her brittle, she opened the vault ,gave me the recipe & handed over the brittle torch to me.
My cooking triumphs
Anything that turns out the way I wanted it to or exceeds my expectations! Like my homemade bratwurst.
My cooking tragedies
Let's not go there! I prefer not to think about my kitchen disasters besides my child can gleefully recount all of them.
