I find it hard to believe how fast time has flown since Magnolia Blossom and I had our Midwest Roundup in November. Seems like it was just a week or so ago that Brenda and I were sitting in the sunroom the morning after we had seen MB off on her long drive home. Even though the roundup was barely over, our conversation turned to organizing another one. Yes, the day before was that much fun. I say “we” but it was really Brenda doing the brainstorming. She was so excited about the prospect that she bubbled over with ideas. When we could have it, what we could do different, how we could lay out things and what kind of food to serve. I laughed to myself while I waited for her to realize she was completely planning an event for me to host. I thought it was so sweet of her to have had so much fun at my house she wanted to come back and do it again! (If you want to see what we did the first time http://allrecipes.com/Cook/13436831/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=205459 & http://allrecipes.com/Cook/13972974/BlogEntry.aspx?postid=205561< .)

Why is it a Mostly Middle Midwest Roundup//Reunion? Because what is considered the Midwest covers lots of territory with many AR cooks living in it. If you look at a map of the U.S., I am right about in the middle. They didn’t call Independence, MO the jumping off point to the West for no reason! I may live some miles northwest of Independence but stick a pin in the map where I do live and it looks pretty much like the middle to me :) (: Was it to be a reunion or a roundup? We decided it had to be both. A reunion of those that were here the first time would be so great! Yet there were some that had wanted to come in November but couldn’t due to conflicts. What about anyone else who wanted to come? A roundup it had to be! Why the mostly? Well, Brenda thought September would be the ideal time for a roundup//reunion. The weather would be nice enough to be outside and anyone wishing to do so could camp out, but I have a big # birthday this year. It has also been quite the year of change at this house. How else to ease into realizing you’re reaching an age that at 19 you thought was old but now it doesn’t look quite so ancient? Not to mention adjusting to all the new changes? I can’t think of a better way than to invite old friends, make new friends and have lots of great food! Mi Be Mi if you can come, will you bring the baked beans?! We are still commenting on how good those were. Who could forget Lisa’s Almond Grahams that were so highly addictive?

So what is the plan we came up with? To have the roundup//reunion over the weekend of July 30th & 31st and to offer a range of sleeping spots. Gas prices weren’t near as bad then as they are threatening to be this summer but even back then, we thought for anyone driving any distance they might like to overnight it. Now it rather looks like a weekend vacation wasn’t such a bad idea. There are all kinds of historic sites in and around Kansas City. Kansas City also can claim an amusement/water park. Not on the scale of Branson’s but for anyone trying to get the most out of their travel $, it is an option. There are sleeping accommodations ranging from B&B’s to motels in the area and, of course, camping. For those wishing to bring their DH’s or other family members, my DH is into NASCAR, hunting, motorcycles and sports cars. If there is a NASCAR race that weekend he will be planted in front of a TV watching it :)(:

Drop me a line with your real name, screen name and address at Catscookn@yahoo.in if you are interested in coming and we’ll see if we can’t get the Mostly Middle Midwest Roundup//Reunion rolling!

Cat! That is my birthday weekend (well August 2nd) and I'd love to take a few days off and come "home".

Apr. 24, 2011 7:17 pm
Oh can you!!? Mine's the 1st! That would be so much fun. Does your DH like to fish?

Apr. 24, 2011 7:21 pm
SQUEAL!!! I have SO got to go in to work tomorrow and request some days off. I am more the fisherman but he loves hunting and dirtbikes and would love to try out your track. Neither of us rode last summer so we are rusty but he is easily entertained. I'd be too shy and just want to scope out all of your lovely plants and flowers :)

Apr. 24, 2011 7:32 pm
Boy, I WISH I could come! My mom will be living with me then and getting away is going to be a challenge let alone the grocery store most days! I will be there in spirit though!

Apr. 24, 2011 7:40 pm
Sounds like so much fun!!! A round-up/reunion and a double birthday!

Apr. 24, 2011 7:46 pm
Oh man, I would LOVE to meet you Wfdm! I am already getting giddy and will take lots of pictures. I would LOVE to meet you too Laurie but I definitely see the challenges there :)

Apr. 24, 2011 8:26 pm
You too, Nicole! Cat is the perfect hostess I hear, from the last round up! I might have to sneak off and ride those horses though... rather do that than eat! LOL I would bring something yummy to share but Carrie still has all of my good antique dishes from the Lepp's gathering! And Cat - just a warning --- better hide that butter churn of yours cuz I got my eye on that baby!

Good morning ladies! Sorry I conked out not long after posting the blog and seeing Nicole & I "mostly" share a birthday! Treking up a hill and down a hill after those elusive mushrooms wore me out. We have a stocked pond to fish in and the DH is getting the tracks ready to ride on! I do so hope you can come Nicole! I hope the gardens are all in good order this year but the "perfect garden" ship is already thinking of letting out her sails :)(: WFDM? and Laurie you know I'd love to have you both here!

Hey Girl! Love the photo of my b read pudding and so glad your troops liked it! All of you midwesterners, you too, Cat, stay safe in and around Missouri. Tornadoes, dams very unsteady, flashfloods, God's love and protecting hands hold you and yours!!

Apr. 25, 2011 6:08 pm
I'm glad you liked the photo SGma, the other fits what you said about finding the recipe better though! This valley we are in may keep us from seeing the sunsets and rises but it has kept us safe!

Apr. 25, 2011 6:24 pm
I'll be putting in for time off so I can get there! Sounds like a blast, just like last time, except extra celebrations.

yee-haw! I'm already planning something for the smoker - will ya save some apple or cherry wood for my newly discovered specialty? Ya know...for that "Big One" we might have to listen to some Hank Williams Jr. "We cooked a pig in the ground, we got some beer on ice, And all my rowdy friends are coming over tonight." Woo Hoo.

Apr. 26, 2011 5:11 am
I kept getting kicked off last night and couldn't get back here. georgi porgi, sorry you can't come but it sounds like you are already going some place fun!

Apr. 26, 2011 5:15 am
MB, I understand why you want to have enough time to get Washington. I probably REALLY understand at the end of the year when mine leaves.

Apr. 26, 2011 5:18 am
bhawk!!!! You remembered how to get back here and your computer is healthy YEAH!!! Got plenty of smoking wood. Can't wait to see what you are bringing!! Are you with me in requesting Mi Be Mi to bring the baked beans? Oh those were good!

Apr. 26, 2011 9:24 am
Late to the party as usual :/ I can't make any definite promises yet as we have alot going on this summer, but I am penciling in the date on my calendar and you can bet I'll do my best to be there! Sounds like alot of fun and of course I'll bring the beans!! Thanks for the invite and I'll do my best to keep in touch (been soooo busy - can't get on much)!Hope bunches of others can make it - would love to meet bunches of our AR friends!

Apr. 26, 2011 3:12 pm
If things weren't so up in the air right now I'd come for sure. My husband has always wanted to take me threw South Dakota and it's not much farther to come see you. But his workplace is struggling for funding and I just don't think we can afford it this year :(. I hope you guys have lots of fun!

Apr. 26, 2011 3:22 pm
Cat Hill you are about 3 hours North of me! It sounds like fun! I know I'm a "newbie" but I hope you all don't mind. No promises but I might be able to swing it depending on DH, DS and the lake/dunes/baseball schedule that weekend ;)

Count me in Cat! I can't wait. Anyone coming from the south/west is welcome to stop by my place and carpool the rest of the way to save some gas money, too. I'm 2-1/2-3 hours southeast of cat.

Apr. 26, 2011 5:52 pm
Daisy K. where are you? If cat's three hours north of you, we might be neighbors! Y'all can contact me through e-mail at 2garniers@embarqmail.com if you're interested in the carpool deal.

Apr. 26, 2011 7:03 pm
Yeah! Some new folks to meet. Can't wait to see you!

Apr. 27, 2011 4:45 am
Oh Sarah-May that would be lovely to have you in my kitchen. The food was part of the fun we had at the roundup. My mouth's watering just thinking of what you could have fixed. I understand about the job situation but maybe there will be a next year. My DH wants to go North. So who knows we could meet somewhere:)(:

Apr. 27, 2011 4:50 am
Daisy K, bhawk (Brenda) was a newbie too so don't let that keep you from coming if you can:) Did you say the dunes? As in, that odd deposit of sand in OK that my guys love going to with their ATV's. You have my email so send me one and I'll keep you posted. It would be great if you could come!

Apr. 27, 2011 4:56 am
Mangel, glad you stopped in! I was hoping you could come!

Apr. 27, 2011 5:06 am
MB, just saw your thread from last night to Soup Loving Nicole. I watched the news last night and wondered if she was OK. How awful! No road, no access to home, people have died in her town and more rain on the way. Anyone reading this, let's send Nicole some positive thoughts!

Apr. 27, 2011 5:11 am
MB's thread http://allrecipes.com/Recipe-Exchange/Recipe-Request.aspx?requestID=233567
Daisy K, you've been here longer than I have LOL!

Apr. 28, 2011 11:35 am

Apr. 28, 2011 6:12 pm

Apr. 29, 2011 8:14 pm
So, Cat - I'm a day older than you, right =D (I am obvioulsy now catching up with the comments . . . )

Apr. 30, 2011 4:49 am

Apr. 30, 2011 8:16 am

About Me
I live in the middle of the U.S. in a farming communtiy. Gardening, reading and cooking are the things you'll mostly find me doing. I also enjoy horseback riding & my many pets. A husband & teen, I have 1 of each.
My favorite things to cook
Bread & BBQ are 2 of my favorite things to cook. I do enjoy a food challenge. Last year it was curing my own brisket for Corned beef & pastrami & porkloin for Canadian bacon. This year sausages & scratch cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Bread and brittle. I learned to bake bread with my Mom. It was her favorite thing to make. My Aunt made the best peanut brittle ever. She'd stopped making it in the later years but when I told her how much I enjoyed her brittle, she opened the vault ,gave me the recipe & handed over the brittle torch to me.
My cooking triumphs
Anything that turns out the way I wanted it to or exceeds my expectations! Like my homemade bratwurst.
My cooking tragedies
Let's not go there! I prefer not to think about my kitchen disasters besides my child can gleefully recount all of them.
