I couldn't decide if the first line of this blog should be "Cat Hill and Magnolia Blossom's Excellent Adventure or "One cold, dark and rainy night after a long drive through Iowa, she arrived at a stranger's house.  Two days later she left as a welcomed friend".  When MB… MORE

TROUBLE DON'T YOU THINK! Indeed, that probably would have been Mom's comment to my culinary adventures yesterday.  A variation on her "what do you want to do that for?" query that I often heard about some of my other kitchen undertakings.  Would she have turned done anything… MORE

“Potentially Toxic Paste banned in Rural School District”! Doesn’t that look like the title and lead in of a sensationalistic sound bite?  Sadly enough, except for the wording, it has been announced and happened in our little school district.  All peanut products have been banned from our… MORE

First of all, let me welcome you!  Pull up a chair and make yourself at home.  Would you care for a glass of wine or tea?  I have regular or mint ( garden fresh) tea.  Need sugar, it's in the cabinet.  Nope, the Screaming Cat's Wild Cherry beer isn't available.  The wild cherry tree hasn't… MORE

Yes, I really am trying to find the "whatever" my family keeps telling me to serve.  It has to exist and I want to buy it, take it home and be able to fix it for lunch or dinner.  Let me be clearer, I want to find their (DH and teen's) idea of "whatever".  Whenever I… MORE

At first glance one might find the title a bit odd as this originally started as a reminiscence of my father and our mutal love for Morels but there is a reason that maybe only a mushroom hunter will understand.  For those unacquainted with this woodland fungus, they are a Springtime treat to… MORE

Again this blog like the last one contains no food, just what I found to be a touching story.  One I felt compelled to share.  Just this last weekend my NIL, Mickey, was put on an organ donor list.  I'd seen him at a graduation party, a celebration, then later in the evening I thought about… MORE

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of every glove that laid him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains Lie La Lie Lie la Lie Lie La Lie    (from "The… MORE

Do you have that certain someone in your life that no matter what you are doing, they just have to ask.  "What do you want to do that for?".  If your answer is no, then I applaud you for being a know where you're going take no guff from anyone kind of person.  I, on the other hand, get asked… MORE

About Me
I live in the middle of the U.S. in a farming communtiy. Gardening, reading and cooking are the things you'll mostly find me doing. I also enjoy horseback riding & my many pets. A husband & teen, I have 1 of each.
My favorite things to cook
Bread & BBQ are 2 of my favorite things to cook. I do enjoy a food challenge. Last year it was curing my own brisket for Corned beef & pastrami & porkloin for Canadian bacon. This year sausages & scratch cakes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Bread and brittle. I learned to bake bread with my Mom. It was her favorite thing to make. My Aunt made the best peanut brittle ever. She'd stopped making it in the later years but when I told her how much I enjoyed her brittle, she opened the vault ,gave me the recipe & handed over the brittle torch to me.
My cooking triumphs
Anything that turns out the way I wanted it to or exceeds my expectations! Like my homemade bratwurst.
My cooking tragedies
Let's not go there! I prefer not to think about my kitchen disasters besides my child can gleefully recount all of them.
