The Ultimate Journey...

I have written about my "hero"  before.  He has served his country and he has served his family well.  This week, my hero is taking on the hardest mission of his life.

You see, his sister, my niece Katherine - 35 years old is fighting the ultimate battle.

My hero is on his way to see his sister, possibly for the last time.

Katherine  is 35, has two children.

Two children that deserve to know their mother.

Katherine has cancer.

You can read her story here.

Katherine's Story

I cannot imagine what my sister, Katherine's mother, is going through.  My sister is a warrior!  As she guides her grandchildren she has to put one foot in front of the other as she faces the doctors grim prognosis for her own child.

Ultimately, we may never know exactly why a young, otherwise healthy woman could develop this type  of invasive cancer.   If you have ever read my blog - you already know what I think.

We need clean food, clean water and clean air.

Katherine is strong in her faith.

We believe in miracles.

We believe in the power of prayer.

I thank you for tolerating my struggle with this blog. It could have, should have been more eloquent. I just don't have it in me to put into words the heartbreak and emotion.

Baking Nana, I was thinking of you and your niece today and was about to post, saw this. You were very eloquent, and I appreciate your willingness to share. I wish I could help with the sadness and pain.

BN: It just isn't fair; is it? Cancer doesn't play nice. I hope your entire family finds the strength they will need.

bikerfamily - Nope - cancer doesn't play fair. This is a difficult journey for sure. I lost my mother when I was 11 but I have my memories of her - at 4 and not quite 2 - will her children remember their mama?

My dear Penny, I can’t image the anguish your family is experiencing. I wish there was some way I could alleviate your sorrow. I’m hopeful that someday others will recognize the increase in cancers, autism, etc. is connected to the earth, and health and well being will have more of a priority than corporate profits. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts. Take care.

BN, my prayers to you and your entire family. Just awful and I don't have words. Big hugs to you and yours.

BN, I just read this and am very saddened. I have witnessed this wicked disease first hand. (pause). Backed up to Katherine's story and just had to leave comp. for a while, having a hard time finding the words. All I can say is that this pain and suffering is NOT what GOD intended for us and that this wicked system we live in now will soon be changed. I will pray every day for Katherine. Keep strong in your faith and pray from the heart and your prayers will be heard. Remember GOD is a loving father and hurts when one of his children suffer. I can quote many scriptures to you but will refrain as this is a public forum. You all have a strong faith and Katherine has the will so it can be beat. Miracles DO happen. One last thing is religious in that Jesus commanded us to LOVE one another as we would love ourselves so I do feel your pain and anguish as a fellow person and follower. Bless you and your family to be strong and endure. With love. Gene

BN, I'm sorry your family is going through this. We had a similar battle and my oldest son was left with three young children in 2002. Life will go on for the survivors, the children will adapt, but it isn't easy for any of them. Sending prayers to your niece and her family.

Thank you for all your kind words and for the prayers and hugs. What a difficult journey this is for Katherine, her husband, kids and her family. I really do believe in the power of prayer. Blessings to you, my friends.

Baking Nana, re the children remembering their mother: that's where I think it impt to keep them in mind through the tough times, to let them know their mother's strength and beauty. If they will have memories of their mother, whether they're of being with her or hearing people speak of her, they can have beautiful memories to cherish.

Jun. 7, 2013 1:04 pm
I read this blog this morning before I left for work, but just did not know how to write and express myself. I still don't. Cancer is a nasty, wicked disease. My heart goes out to you and your family. Please know you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Katherine is a beautiful young woman!

Jun. 7, 2013 2:16 pm
Thank you emeralds. Mother Ann - there are no 'right' words are there? But the kind thoughts and prayers help a great deal.

Jun. 7, 2013 5:28 pm
I saw this blog when you first posted it and knowing first hand what it is like to lose a family member (son) to "C" I can't find the words to express my sorrow for you and your family. I can say that our prayers and positive thoughts are with you and your family.

Jun. 7, 2013 6:37 pm
Thoughts and prayers winging their way from Wisconsin. Too hard to comprehend and make any sense of. Memories kept in our hearts are never forgotten when shared. And miracles can and do occur. I pray for one for your dear family.

Jun. 7, 2013 8:19 pm
Ah, Penny there really are no words. You know I am firmly in agreement with you as regards food (and water and air.) I add my prayers to all the others, for Katherine, her children, your sister and the rest of the family.

Jun. 7, 2013 9:55 pm
Thank you. These are the times of our lives that make us who we are. Many of us have traveled this road. bd.weld - I know that you and your bride have traveled this road. It is not easy. Life and death are not meant to be 'easy' - but most certainly a journey. It makes all the small annoyances that I get upset about seem petty, in comparison.

No words suffice... ((hugs))

I get chills every time I read of another being afflicted by this horrible disease....especially young people. As you know, we have been both cursed and saved from this disease and we know all too well that miracles do happen. I wish a miracle for Katherine and that she find peace and comfort surrounded by all that love her.

Jun. 9, 2013 2:29 pm
Many thoughts and prayers are with your family during this most difficult time. May God wrap his loving arms around you all.

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
