Two years ago I had no idea that my life was about to change.

Food, Fun and Friendship.  Who would have known that my life would be so enriched through a recipe site?

In September 2010 we took a leap of faith - broke all the rules and  a bunch of strangers gathered at my home for our first Southern California Round-Up.   Today, I am honored to call those strangers, friends!  Unlike Facebook 'friends' these are  Real Friends.

With this group there are no strangers - as soon as you walk in the door you are welcomed and hugged, you are a friend.  Laughter abounds, time flies and soon you are planning the next get together.  We never want it to end.

This years gathering in Las Vegas  was in the planning stages  since last years gathering.

As luck would have it Mauigirl's son was scheduled for surgery in Los Angeles the Friday we were to meet.  She could have cancelled the event at her home, we would have all certainly understood.  Amazingly, she forged ahead, making reservations, ordering tables and chairs, making food and staging the entire event.

Then she gave me the key to her house and left for Los Angeles to be with her son.

Talk about a leap of faith!

I had planned on bringing the Shoyu chicken in a cooler - alas I discovered, late Thursday night,  that I had bought 20 lbs of bone in / skin on chicken.  Plan B:  Stop at Costco and pick up the boneless / skinless chicken in Vegas.

Marianne and Magnolia Blossom arrived before me and went straight to work. They went to Costco for me and got the chicken and we got that in the marinade and tucked safely into Mauigirl's refrigerator.  Looking around and checking our lists there was little else to be done - Mauigirl had done it all!

Everyone met at the Harley Davidson Cafe Friday night where bd.weld presented me with another set of keys.  Golden Keys!

You see, a few months ago I came on the Buzz looking for help unlocking a bathroom door.  I had poked and prodded, twisted and turned.  I had googled and searched videos to no avail.   I had every tool box out - nothing was working.  bd.weld saved the day!   The magic key was merely a paper clip - push and turn AT THE SAME TIME!  Voila!

left to right

Marianne, Cathy Myers, Bibi, Baking Nana, Del Mar Girl, Patty Cakes, Magnolia Blossom, XRayBarb, AR Elizabeth, bd.weld and Tabasco Mom.

Bibi, Tabasco Mom, Del Mar Girl and bd.weld and his lovely bride Debi were new comers to the group but not for long.  You see, we really already knew them - we just had not met before.

Saturday morning we all jumped into action.   Marianne, Magnolia Blossom & I headed to Mauigirl's house.  bd.weld and Debi headed to the airport to pick up Mauigirl.  Tables, chairs, tents - Mauigirl had thought of everything!

The tables were set and decorated with lovely gifts from Mauigirl, Lady Sparkle and AR Elizabeth.

Look at these works of art!  Lady Sparkle sent us all beautiful Dish Cloths.  Can you believe they are really dish cloths?  What talent!  Lady Sparkle - you might not have been with us in person but you certainly were with us in spirit!

Our lovely and generous AR Elizabeth.  Thank you for joining us!

Here is bd.weld.

Proof he got lei'd in Vegas!

Our lovely and gracious, Marianne!

DelMarGirl, XRay Barb and Patty Cakes.

Mauigirl made us cry with her kind words.

Del Mar Girl - another great addition to the group.

Let me tell you, this girl knows how to have fun!

We talked long into the night - none of us wanted it to end!

Then Mauigirl invited us all over to do it again on Sunday!

Sunday morning we gathered again - round 3!

Sleep? Who needs sleep!

"We can sleep when we're dead!"

Party On!

 Magnolia Blossom and Bibi

Mauigirl and Bibi

Baking Nana, Mauigirl and Bibi

Although these folks come from all over the country, from different walks of life there is a common thread.  Every single person is a "giver".  They give of themselves, they give friendship, acceptance and love.

Thank you AllRecipes for bringing us together.

We are blessed.

Great blog, Penny! So sorry I couldn't be there this year! I am jealous...see you in Seattle tho! XOXO Jules did a great job with everything but she couldn't have pulled it out off without such a great group!
May 24, 2012 12:16 pm
Love, love, love your blog! Sounds like you all had so much fun.
May 24, 2012 12:19 pm
What a wonderful blog Penny and of course fabulous pictures! For those that are looking at my pic - yes I was mid tears because Julie was saying such loving words about us all. This was one of the best weekends of my life meeting all of you. My life is so much more blessed with all of you in it
May 24, 2012 12:22 pm
Hi Cindy! I wish you could have been with us. Seattle is going to be a blast. I can't wait to give you a hug! That Mauigirl put this all together for us is amazing!
May 24, 2012 12:23 pm
Thanks Paula. We did have such a good time. We never want for it to come to an end. I can't wait to meet you.
May 24, 2012 12:26 pm
DelMarGirl - we were all in tears. Julie's kind and loving words touched us all - what a gift she has. I am so glad you joined us. We will do it again, promise!
May 24, 2012 12:33 pm
What a wonderful bunch of gals (and guys)! Friendships built on, and new friendships blossoming.....sounds like the perfect weekend!
May 24, 2012 12:38 pm
Everything looks so wonderful. I wish I had some of you friends here to help me organize. I can't organize my way out of a paper bag. Looks like another great get together!
May 24, 2012 12:39 pm
wyattdogster - thanks for stopping in. I find that it is unusual to be making so many new friends at this point in my life. I meet all kinds of people who I would call acquaintances - but these people are really truly 'friends'. It really was the perfect weekend.
May 24, 2012 12:41 pm
It is such fun to read all this! It's just a little heaven to relive it all! Thank you ever so much for posting this! Friends forever!
May 24, 2012 12:41 pm
Beautiful Blog, beautiful pictures, beautiful people! You have certainly said it BN; we are BLESSED!
May 24, 2012 12:42 pm
It makes me feel just a tad junior high type---BFFs!
May 24, 2012 12:42 pm
The open hearts of the AR family amaze me. So glad you all came together and then shared your joy with the rest of us.
May 24, 2012 12:42 pm
Hi ibbz - Mauigirl is the ultimate hostess. She thought of everything, we just helped pull it off. Hopefully you will be able to get to one of these gatherings!
May 24, 2012 12:50 pm
What great pics of you all! Sounds like yall had agreat time.. Our Southern roundup is coming up... and I can't wait to experience an AR family gathering! Thanks for the blog.. now I am super excited!
May 24, 2012 12:54 pm
Marianne. How blessed we are to have met? :) I can't imagine not having you in my life! We even have fun while trimming chicken. :) I really didn't want the weekend to end. But, we will do it again, soon.
May 24, 2012 1:03 pm
Oh Candice! I know that you understand the true beauty of these friendships - because you are a friend as well. I can't wait to see you again.
May 24, 2012 1:08 pm
Marie C. This kind of joy just must be shared. Everyone should have people like these in their lives. It is amazing though, isn't it? Who would have thought! There are hundreds of recipe sites but it is the AR-Peeps that make AR special.
May 24, 2012 1:10 pm
Terry - I just know you are going to have a blast! I wish I could attend all the the AR Round Ups. Thanks for stopping in and prepare to be hugged when you get to the Southern Round Up. :)
May 24, 2012 1:20 pm
It's always such a treat to get to see everyone! And those who were not able to make it were all missed. I don't think there is a space beg enough to house ALL the people we want to have in one place (= I am so grateful to you all for blogging and sharing your pictures! It is great to keep re-living the wonderful weekend! [Anyone counting how many times I've used the word "wonderful" in regards to Vegas? - lol!] Miss you all, already!
May 24, 2012 1:30 pm
Barb! There you are! I just added another picture of you and Patty! Yes, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! I swear I could write a blog the size of a novel in regards to all these wonderful gatherings. Thanks for taking that leap of faith and coming to that first gathering. My life is certainly richer for it!
May 24, 2012 1:42 pm
Just a little over a week until our get together, can't wait! Some day I'm coming your direction!!
May 24, 2012 1:52 pm
Sassy - you have got to be getting so excited! Take loads of pictures! If you ever make to the west coast - let us know and we will hold a gathering in your honor!
May 24, 2012 2:07 pm
Baking Nana, thank you again for stepping up when our lives seemed to spin out of our control. It was too funny.....several friends said to me " are you sure you want to give the keys to your house to strangers?" I just smiled and said that I had nothing to worry about with this crowd :) Looking back, I may have spoke prematurely after seeing pix from the "wild bunch" at the Harley Davidson Cafe LOL! I am now looking forward to the Emerald City bash and then off to my Maui AR bash Oct. 2013. Come one come all!!!!! Thanks again to you and your helpers for pulling this off. It was a real leap of faith that brought this whole thing to fruition. PS I am so hooked on these gatherings that I am trying desperately to figure out a way to do another regional event. Go AR Peeps!
May 24, 2012 2:28 pm
Oh Baking Nana, I just knew you'd post some great stuff. We all had such a great time.
May 24, 2012 2:29 pm
Everybody's pics are great and I'm stealing them all! Thank YOU, Ba'Nana - for taking that first leap of faith, and bringing all these crazy [in a good way (=] into your home, and into your heart!
May 24, 2012 2:30 pm
Baking Nana, I said once during the weekend that my cheeks were kind of cramping from smiling too much, and darned if I'm not doing it again--smiling all the way through this, actually hearing everyone's voices in the words on the page! I haven't experienced so much true joy in a long time. Looking forward to smiling again in Seattle!
May 24, 2012 2:33 pm
After having time to think about the Viva Las Vegas Blowout I have decided that there was one major problem....IT WAS NOT LONG ENOUGH. For those that have never been to a round-up fear not. You would never know that it was the first time you've met in person. Baking Nana, not only a great blog, you are a great friend.
May 24, 2012 2:40 pm
Sheesh! That should have read "Thank YOU, Ba'Nana - for taking that first leap of faith, and bringing all these crazy [in a good way (=] STRANGERS into your home, and into your heart!"
May 24, 2012 2:48 pm
This is why I love Allrecipes. These fine people right here!!! Miss y'all dearly, I look forward to July to getting all my hugs in. And for those that I won't see in July...planning on other adventures down the road with traveling.
May 24, 2012 2:54 pm
Great blog of course BN!! Mauigirl is Soo Trusting that she even leaves a note on the front door telling you where she has gone and leaves the door Unlocked with the stereo turned to a Rockin station and Lili, her love muffin to greet you!! Magnolia,Marianne and I just walked in and made ourselves at home, cuz we Were at home!! MG is the Ultimate hostess!! Thanks again and if any of you need a push to get to know a fellow AR family member, these blogs are testament that it is worth it!! You will not regret it!
May 24, 2012 3:05 pm
Thinking about the name of your blog . . . . Who would classify Las Vegas as a place to nourish the soul? But it definitely was!
May 24, 2012 3:13 pm
Oh Mauigirl.....you are so very dear to all of us. Thank you for going the distance and making this happen. Memories like these last a lifetime. Even No Baking Papa said, "She's giving you the key to her house and she isn't even sure when she will be back? Really?" That is truly a leap of faith. Thank you for being our friend. I can't wait to see everyone again! The sooner the better!
May 24, 2012 3:16 pm
Magnolia Blossom - Thank you for everything - for driving in the 'Big City' (that took courage) for all your help and especially for being our friend. You are a true adventurer.
May 24, 2012 3:22 pm
Barb - That initial leap of faith truly changed the landscape of my life. So many great people have entered my life since that first gathering. Did I ever tell you that I planned that without NB Papa's knowledge? Now that was a leap of faith! It is a bit of an oxymoron to equate Vegas and nourishing your soul - but I really came home energized and revitalized. Friendship does that to a person. It is difficult to describe the camaraderie to an outsider. You just have to live it!
May 24, 2012 3:25 pm
Mis7up were your ears burning all the way up in Oregon????? We were talkin' 'bout you kid XO
May 24, 2012 3:25 pm
Bibi - My jaws hurt too. So much smiling going on! Actually - after I got back from the Harley Davidson I was so pumped up I couldn't go to sleep. I was so jazzed just knowing that we had more to look forward to. I can hardly wait for Seattle. Be prepared to smile and get hugged!
May 24, 2012 3:30 pm
bd - You are right - Time just flew by and it was over way fast. BTW - the 'golden keys' are in their new home - above each bathroom doorway. Never again will I be locked out of my own bathroom! Thank you for everything, my friend!
May 24, 2012 3:32 pm
Hmmm... you saw the white knuckles didn't you? Can't wait to see you in Seattle. Does this mean we're going to be "Sleepless in Seattle?"
May 24, 2012 3:33 pm
mis7up - You were missed this year for sure, you were in our thoughts though. There will be a 'next time' and you will be there! Yes, it is the Peeps that make AR so very special. See you soon, be prepared to be hugged!
May 24, 2012 3:44 pm
Patty Cakes, Thank you for taking that first leap of faith. Look what has grown from that? Isn't is nice to be surrounded by love and friendship? It is truly good for the soul. Thank you for being such a good friend.
May 24, 2012 3:44 pm
I just love reading all of this. It just warms the heart. I even find myself reaffirming the comments aloud! Thanks for a great blog, B'Nana!
May 24, 2012 3:48 pm
Magnolia - We will indeed be "Sleepless in Seattle!" (Note to self -snag that for the name of a blog!) We are living proof that sleep is highly over rated! I can't wait for our next adventure. BTW - I think Mauigirl has the driving duty in Seattle - she is a pro! You can sit back in comfort and watch her navigate the next 'Big City'. See you in Seattle, friend!
May 24, 2012 4:00 pm
Marianne - I am grinning from ear to ear - like Bibi, my jaw starts hurting! Oh, man - what fun! I can't wait for our next adventure. Who's coming?
May 24, 2012 4:51 pm
Wonderful blog B'Nana! :) Brought back the fondest memories of last year. I can only imagine! It's true about meeting everyone. There was NO discomfort. . .EVER. It was like seeing an old friend, someone you already knew. Really magical. It may sound unbelievable to anyone who hasn't had the experience but honestly, if you are able, go to a meet with some of these fine folks, wherever you are. You will meet FRIENDS! Thanks for the great pics!
May 24, 2012 5:10 pm
LadySparkle... you were missed this year but were with us in spirit. Thank you so much for your lovely gifts! I am so glad that we got to meet last year. I will be thinking of you on your adventure to Cat's gathering. Wish I was joining you. BTW - please make sure that Mr. Harvey gets some food and water along the way and you might want to take him for a walk along the way. The trunk gets a little tight and he is going to need his strength for his Cancer Survivors Walk. Love you girl!
May 24, 2012 5:16 pm
Ah, you gave me goosebumps when I talked to you on the phone at mauigirl's. I just had to call that day since it had meant so much to me to hear 2 "friend" strangers at my last roundup. You brought tears to my eyes with your blog cause it is so true, who knew AR could give us these kinds of forever friends?!
May 24, 2012 5:32 pm
Cat - Thanks so much for calling! It was so good to talk to you. Who would have thought that searching for recipes would lead us into a whole world of friendship and caring? Wow - we are blessed, indeed! One of these days we will meet, friend!
May 24, 2012 6:08 pm
Right now, I'm starting a mad money stash for that Maui bash in October of 2013. That's a gotta do, for sure. Gonna be tough because we are getting our kitchen done next year, too. That might fall nicely with the doings that WitchyWoman puts on. Could it really happen? ... Thanks for telling magnolia Blossom to give me food, water and exercise. However, I am not going to participate in the survivors lap in Kearney. I don't want to impose upon the more deserving local survivors. I will be make some laps with everyone else, though. ... Congratulations to each of the participants in the Las Vegas Event for being open and welcoming with each other.
May 24, 2012 6:21 pm
Oops! You told that to Lady Sparkle! Shoulda known you were too smart to ask MB!
May 24, 2012 6:30 pm
Mike - you are OUR survivor and I wish I were there to walk with you. Stash that $$$ my "friend" - Maui Girl can get us a killer deal on condos and we are already plotting and planning how to cut costs for food / meals etc.... I should say, we could be our own entertainment and save us a bunch of bucks! You are a friend just waiting to be hugged!
May 24, 2012 6:35 pm
OH BTW - Mike - MB seems like a kind and compassionate person - I am sure she will take pity on you and your travel arrangements. I can't wait to hear all about it. bd.weld is testimony that a male can and will survive and thrive in the female occupied AR gatherings. You will be the "eye candy" of the group.
May 24, 2012 6:36 pm
Mike Harvey.....you will have cabana boy duties on Maui :)
May 24, 2012 6:53 pm
we all love you! i certainly wish the southern round-up could tan your hide! southern yehaws can rock...we would love to see ALL ya at the redneck round-up in september.terrific pictures...gambling and a lei...hmmm, wonder if the cooking-challenged wife will allow me to attend ya's next roundup?
May 24, 2012 7:05 pm
Oh, Gary - you forgot the pretty young men - YUM-MY! lol!
May 24, 2012 7:11 pm
I have to say that everyone who blogged about Vegas has just been so poetic and eloquent. ALL of the blogs are just lovely!
May 24, 2012 7:21 pm
we all love ya baking nana! great pictures!!
May 24, 2012 7:40 pm
Gary, bring her with you! She would like us, I promise you!
May 24, 2012 7:58 pm
I would be glad to ride shotgun with mauigirl. I can't stand driving those steep hills down by the waterfront in Seattle. Creeps me out. And I really can't see why Mike Harvey is soooo concerned. If he really needs fresh air, I can strap him to the roof. I have bungee cords and I am not afraid to use them.
May 24, 2012 7:59 pm
On a serious note (and hey, I do have a serious side), I absolutely cannot wait to meet Mike Harvey and his lovely wife and to see my Sparkle Britches again.
May 24, 2012 8:47 pm
My ears are always burning for one reasone or another ;-) I can't wait for Seattle. I have already begun my save for next years Maui bash!
May 24, 2012 8:57 pm
Baking Nana, fun and friendship did indeed abound in the Vegas AR Gathering. I got a kick out of the gold keys from bd weld. I enjoyed reading about the adventure and may you all have a great time in Seattle. It is nice to know there are wonderful people out there who help each other when they are needed.
May 24, 2012 9:02 pm
Seriously, Mike - the roof sounds like a good alternative.... Bring good bungies MB - we don't want to loose a "keeper"!
May 24, 2012 9:06 pm
gderr - I would love to meet you and your bride! One day.... Some day! In the mean time - I know that we are "friends" bless you 'friend'. :)
May 24, 2012 9:08 pm
Mis7up- See you there! We are just a party waiting to happen!
May 24, 2012 9:11 pm
Lela - this group is awesome - we got each others backs - I couldn't be more blessed. Pay it forward - Pass it on - start your own round up. You will not be sorry.
May 24, 2012 9:30 pm
gderr...you are the common denominator for so many of us here. That scary night that you shared your fear for your precious bride hooked many of us....I know your blog hooked me. You and your bride are at the top of my bucket list!
May 24, 2012 9:34 pm
Btw, I didn't have the heart to use those Beautiful cloths made by a Big heart, Thanks LS!! so I had Carlos thumb tack them above our bed.
May 24, 2012 9:43 pm
Patty - they are almost too pretty to use, aren't they! I have them on my counter "pretending" to be dish cloths. Sparkle Britches is one talented and generous woman!
May 24, 2012 10:33 pm
Her spirit is reflected in her avatar (=
May 25, 2012 6:41 am
great pics, I still want to go fishing in Maui's pool. I am sure she would not mind changing the water for salt water and adding some crabs. I will bring my own crab cage:P
May 25, 2012 6:42 am
I love the idea of heart shaped dish cloths. Sparkle Britches, you are such a smarty pantz. I make boring old square ones, heart shaped ones might make the kitchen chores a labour of love.
May 25, 2012 7:07 am
I loved reading all these blogs. It makes me feel almost like I was there. Hopefully one of these days I will be. I can't wait to meet all of you.
May 25, 2012 9:51 am
Oh thank heavens someone else couldn't use Lady Sparkle's dish clothes. Mine are the square ones but they have such pretty colors they just hang in my kitchen. Was wondering how to explain that to LS when she comes. bungee cords, now there is an idea! You are so clever, MB!
May 25, 2012 10:26 am
I have never used any of the beautiful clothes that sparkle britches made us.....just too pretty to use. BTW Redneck Grandma.....I have a salt water pool. Come on over, got a spare room for ya :)
May 25, 2012 11:53 am
Maui, your offer is tempting but your military has air space issues when I fly my broom out of Alberta territory. Since it would take knocking me out to get me onto a plane, I will be with everyone in spirit and live vicariously through blogs.
May 25, 2012 4:37 pm
Hey, Gramma! The USAF will not shoot down anything coming from Canadian airspace without the OK of the RAF. Of course, it would help you to have a LOT of friends in the RAF!
May 25, 2012 4:41 pm
Cabana duties, mauigirl?!!! Like applying sun screen and massaging? If so, I'll get my massage therapy certification right away!
May 25, 2012 4:43 pm
I feel a little iffy about the encouragement that Baking Nana and Cat are offering. Makes me say, "Hmmmm. Hmmmmm."
May 25, 2012 7:32 pm
RNG - that is a CEment pond that Mauigirl has - bout the only thing you can fish out of that there pond are leaves - just ask Mrs. Weld. She is a pro at fishing out those leaves! :) No crabs in that there CEment pond.
May 25, 2012 7:33 pm
How touching!:) This site is a blessing.
May 25, 2012 7:34 pm
Char - if you ever make it out West give us a shout out - we will be there to welcome you.
May 25, 2012 7:38 pm
Cat Hill - LS swears they are perky tools to make chores more pleasant. They look like decor to me! As for Mike, treat him kindly - we need a Cabana Boy in Maui!
May 25, 2012 7:59 pm
Magnolia Blossom - take good care of our cabana boy! No certification needed Mike - just a good supply of sunscreen and a stack of clean towels and you will be all set. I will promise you a prime spot on the sand in Maui!
May 25, 2012 8:01 pm
cookandbakegirl - we are very blessed. AR folks have hearts of gold! Who could ask for more?
May 27, 2012 7:53 pm
BN: Sounds like enjoyed another very successful get-together. When are you meeting in Seattle?

May 29, 2012 12:12 am

May 29, 2012 4:20 am
bikerfamily - AR is hosting the Ambassadors on Thursday and Friday. Some of us are coming in Tuesday so we have a couple of extra days to explore. I would love to meet you.

Lovely group of ladies and a gent. : ) Looks like so much fun!
May 29, 2012 7:29 am

May 29, 2012 9:42 am
wisweetp - Thanks for stopping in. We had such a good time. We are already planning our next meeting. :) Wish you could join us.

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
