We Are Thankful ....

I have many things to be thankful for.
Each and everyday
I am thankful for the pile of dishes
Because it means we had food to eat.
I am thankful for the laundry
Because it means we have clothes to wear.

I am especially thankful for
For our friends on the Buzz
For the special friendships we have made
For laughter, smiles and hugs.

The Southern California Chapter of AR planned to gather at Tom's Farm's.
Have you ever heard that 'It Never Rains in California'?
Not so -
The weather forecast predicted a huge storm -
Which in Southern California meant rain.
I, personally, love the rain -
But I put in a plea to the Weather Gods - asking for a little cooperation.
We pressed on - undaunted!
As it turned out it was overcast and threatening but
It didn't rain on our parade!
Let me back up a bit - Mauigirl Julie and her lovely husband and loyal companion Lily were planning on driving across the dessert to join us.
In the rain, this can be a four + hour, white knuckle drive.
Emails flew back and forth - finally it was agreed to proceed -
Carpools were arranged, plans made and we forged ahead with our plans prepared to be a bunch of wet hens out to Respect the Bird!

Lily made herself quite comfy.
But I think she is keeping an eye open for our big black lab.

Saturday morning arrived - damp and deary....
We pressed on....holding onto hope that the skies would clear.
As agreed we met at Tom's Farms Wine and Cheese Shop.
The smell of fresh baked bread greeted us -
Racks and racks of wine - cases of cheese - condiments galore!
It was a feast for all the senses just awaiting our eager group.

Just look at this lug of string cheese!
I was just imaging how much milk it took to make this!
While we were waiting there was so much to explore!

They must have known the Mauigirl was coming!

We thought these products would be appreciated by our brethren.
This is a case of "If the shoe fits....."
Yes - we were thinking of you....

Cat - we were thinking of you too!
It is hard to see in this picture but this is a Cat wine bottle.
We were not disappointed to find the wine bar "Respecting the Bird."
Soon the rest of group started arriving.
On the far left is our newest member 1st Lady!
Then Marianne, Mauigirl Julie and Dawn-'Trying Cake'.
Thank you for being brave enough to join us, First Lady!
Look what Barb found!
gderr and Doug
Thinking of you!
XRayBarb and Baby XRay gave me this lovely tribute!
We were soon all starving and so it was off to the lunch.
Dawn made the right choice!
She got the Nathans HUGE Chili Dog!
After lunch it was arts and crafts time.
Mauigirl - Julie had to hunt high and low but she did prevail!
Right there in the restaurant we started assembling our version of
"Respect the Bird"
Baby XRay and XRay Barb
There was a young boy who was seated at the table next to us that was quite intrigued by our Respect the Bird project.
He gladly joined in with the fun.
(No pictures of him, as I don't have his parents approval)
Mauigirl- Julie, Marianne and Baby XRay
Noemi's contribution
Maui-Girls Creation

Look who we found!
Chef Luigi's cousin "Tom"
Chef Tom was quite honored to join the All Recipes group.
After lunch we headed to the  Home Store

Look what we found for you Sassy!

We were thinking of you  Witchy Woman!

Redneck Grandma - we were thinking of you, too.

At the Home Store we found a complete Thanksgiving dinner ready for us!
From the left  -XRay Barb. Baking Nana, 1st Lady, Mauigirl, Marianne & TryingCake-Dawn.

From there we were off to the Produce Market.
The bounty of Autumn.

Noemi, Mauigirl-Julie and XRay Barb
Gabriella and Marianne

"Respect the Bird!"
Hey, nobody said it had to be a Turkey!
On our way out - Mauigirl Julie and I stopped by to visit with this old miner.
He thanked us for coming and gladly adopted our token of appreciation

OMG! One year ago today I had my first middle of the Midwest roundup. DH and I have already tossed ideas back and forth for the 2012 3rd annual one. I,too,am very thankful for the friends I have made thru AR. I thought that was a cat bottle before I read the caption. Too cool! What a lovely blog and a great read while having the first cup of coffee!
Nov. 13, 2011 6:11 am
Where's my tractor?! Sorry, old joke around here. Thanks for the mention, but I don't get it LOL! My gardens not that big! Redneck Grammas is though. I'll loan it out to her. Gotta get the flat fixed first. Wonderful blog, good to see those smiling faces!
Nov. 13, 2011 6:15 am
Nice blog about our wonderful day, Baking Nana! (The weather held out just because Baking Nana had a strong talk with the weather gods!) We found a mixture there of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The one store was all "in" to their upside-down Christmas trees. I guess no one told them that they are officially passe! Thanks for the blog!!!
Nov. 13, 2011 7:54 am
Oh Ba'Nana! I can't believe you were up after 1:00 posting this! Nor can I believe babyxray and I are both up right now (= See you in a bit =D
Nov. 13, 2011 8:12 am
Sorry-couldn't make it. My son had AYSO soccer playoffs. They won their first game them played again 2 hours later and lost after overtime in penalty shots but he did score a goal from center field-what an awesome shot. Looks like you all had a blast. One of these times it will work out.
Nov. 13, 2011 8:33 am
What fun! As others said, I felt like I was right there with you crafting a turkey!!
Nov. 13, 2011 8:53 am

Nov. 13, 2011 9:06 am

What a beautiful group of ladies you all are. I'm loving the arts and crafts turkey project everyone took part in. A wonderful tribute to "friendship" and "gratitude."
Nov. 13, 2011 10:36 am

Nov. 13, 2011 4:18 pm
Baking Nana....Mike and I were made it home by 3 and I finally had a minute to look at this "all nighter bolg". GREAT job. Mike and i were cracking up with the reminders of our AR adventure. Whenever we get together, I have a heck of a time wiping the smile off my face. Love all you girls and I so enjoyed meeting Dawn, Laura & Angelica. Hope I didn't scare them off. They are def keepers! Thanks again for everything and I look forward to our cookie decorating party in December. PS Lily said thanks for the comfy sofa too :)
Nov. 13, 2011 4:19 pm
Oh, I so want to meet the SoCal group! I love my AR friends, and I love that we have so much fun together on-line and off:) Thanks for sharing B'Nana. BTW, did you ever make that Zucchini relish? And if so, how did No-Baking-Papa like it?
Nov. 13, 2011 4:20 pm
BTW That giant string cheese was handmade in SEATTLE home of Allrecipes. I grabbed a small one to try:)
Nov. 13, 2011 4:20 pm
gderr.....I covered Lily's eyes so she didn't see the rat dawg thing LOL!
Nov. 13, 2011 7:02 pm
Oh Gosh! Where do I start! mis7up - if you come this way you best let us know! Sounds like a perfect excuse for another gathering! Please come!
Nov. 13, 2011 7:09 pm
Sherri - I worked hard to get his out before that Sunday morning cup of coffee - thank you for reading and commenting. I wish you could have joined us. Believe me, we had a ball! That lug of cheese was $80. and if I thought we could have eaten it I would have bought it. Man, I was drooling!
Nov. 13, 2011 7:17 pm
Denise: Thank you so much. If you EVER get to our neck of the woods, let us know. We would love to meet you! There is no short supply of love and goodwill in this group.

Nov. 13, 2011 7:31 pm
LadySparkle - We missed your special Sparkle! You would have loved this place - (((hugs))) to you! We indeed do have much to be thankful for! I am Thankful to have met you!
Nov. 13, 2011 7:44 pm
Hey, Terry Tripp, that little Dawn did a great job of finishing off that puppy! It was a great day! I have a few condiments to try now. I bought some Spicy Peach-Chardonnay Preserves with Chipotle Chiles and some Ingelhoffer Cranberry Mustard (Ingelhoffer makes my very favorite horseradish--so this HAS to be good). We have sandwiches often for lunch, so this was my thought in these purchases.
Nov. 13, 2011 7:44 pm
Oh, and I bought some macintosh apples to make weeble's apple crisp cups thingies.
Nov. 13, 2011 7:51 pm
Witchywoman - thanks for stopping in! You were with us in spirit! Mother Ann - We had a blast - I wish we could all meet in person - but through AR we all get to "know" each other and share the joy.
Nov. 13, 2011 7:55 pm
KingSparta - That was one amazing hot dog! I order a burger - it was less than stellar. Next time I would buy a loaf of bread, a hunk of cheese and some of the amazing deli meat....add some of those condiments and a bottle of wine = a little slice of heaven
Nov. 13, 2011 7:58 pm
Cat - they had 6 or 7 different cat bottles. None of my pictures of them came out great....but we were thinking of you. One of these days I will make it to the Mid-West and come knocking on your door!
Nov. 13, 2011 8:02 pm
Sassy - this was a hard choice - getting that tractor into Canada could pose a problem besides Redneck Gramma got the wind chimes. You can loan it to her but you have to figure out how to get it there - flat tires on tractors aren't covered by AAA!
Nov. 13, 2011 8:13 pm
Marianne - I am so glad that the weather held off for us. It was so good to see you again. Weren't those trees a kick! At least they had Thanksgiving trees! I hope you enjoy your purchases.
Nov. 13, 2011 8:19 pm
Hi XRayBarb! I was up very late - hoping to get this out for a Sunday morning 'read'. No Baking Papa came out just to make sure I hadn't fallen asleep. Then up for breakfast with you Baby XRay and Mauigirl. Tonight I am whooped - but just joyous for our time together
Nov. 13, 2011 8:27 pm
Ken - If you and your family are ever head done the 15 toward San Diego stop at Tom's Farms - wait, call us first and we will meet you there. Congratulations to your son on his awesome goal. I know the thrill of those great games - they are memories that last a long time. One of these times we will drag you to one of these gatherings

Oh what fun we had!
Nov. 13, 2011 9:16 pm
gderr - Lily was the perfect house guest! Aren't those Frog Balls a HOOT! Barb found those gems - I figured they must be a Southern treat - if not, Doug would know what to do with them! If you and Claire get a chance to come to So Cal - we will roll out the red carpet.
Nov. 13, 2011 9:27 pm
Covergirl - those Frog Balls are pickled Brussell Sprouts....I have to say I was tempted! But I might be alone - so I passed, this time.
Nov. 13, 2011 9:33 pm
luv2cook - Why do you live 3000 miles away? Come on! Come visit your roots girl. We will take you out and show you a grand time. Come On Girl! How about Vegas????? Think spring in Vegas!

Nov. 13, 2011 9:45 pm
Mauigirl - thank you for all your help this weekend! What a great weekend! Laughter - smiles - hugs - more laughter. Who could ask for more! Want some frog balls? Lily is welcome here anytime - she is a gem! Gderr - this is no "rat dog" Lily has dignity and manners!
Nov. 13, 2011 9:53 pm
Mangel - Please come to see us in So. California. Let us know and we will assemble the troops! I am so thankful for my AR friends - those I have met and those I have yet to meet! As for the relish - no I never did it - I did Dill Spears - No Baking Papa didn't like them (neither did the grandkids) - I should have gone with your relish! Next time!
Nov. 13, 2011 10:30 pm
I am so glad we made breakfast this morning! My veggie burrito was very good! [Despite the fact that it sounded "healthy" (=] babyxray and I doubled back to Payless, then stopped again at Target. I took a looooooong nap when we finally made it home. Felt so good! I probably would have slept through if my cat hadn't stepped on my bladder - danged cat! [Sorry for the tmi moment (=] I just had mauigirl cookies and a cup of tea - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! Now I am ready for bed!
Nov. 14, 2011 5:03 am

Nov. 14, 2011 10:26 am
Wish I was there! Enjoyed reading about it; thanks for sharing!!
Nov. 14, 2011 11:14 am
Wow! B'Nana, that was a very nice blog! And the meet up seems to be another great time. FYI. Those "Fartless" products do not work when they are used in baked beans. (So I've heard.)
Nov. 14, 2011 11:37 am
YOU BETTER! LOLOL! We may not have such cool places to see and visit but the door will be open here and so will the arms for a big ole hug!!!!! The BBQ isn't half bad here either :)(:
Nov. 14, 2011 1:32 pm
Another top of the charts blog BN. Looked like fun. It seems as though Tom's Farm has changed since the 70's.
Nov. 14, 2011 2:15 pm
Oh my goodness, it looks like you all had so much fun! I was SO sad I wasn't able to join you!! Darn those financial issues and the price of gas money :-P I hope to make it to the cookie decorating at Baking Nana's house in December, though! I have one of those cat wine bottles!! Mine is red. I REALLY wanted the pink one that benefitted breast cancer research, but by the time I had the money to get one, the store was all sold out of the pink ones, so I got a red one instead.
Nov. 14, 2011 4:11 pm
Baking Nana your blogs don't disappoint. I love reliving the fun through your pictures and great captions!! I was so tempted to meet you all for breakfast, but had to stay and work on my nephews b-day dinner. Next time!! So happy I was able to meet up and spend time with each of you!! Miss you all already. But, I am happy that we will see each other soon for cookie decorating!! And Cathy Meyers we sure did miss your smiling face!! You too Patty Cakes and Erika!! So don't miss the fun next month ok??!!

Great Blog Penny...looks like the lovely ladies of So Cal and the visitor from Nevada had a great ol time. You ladies are beautiful. It's always a great read to catch up to what everyone does on their get togethers. One of these days, I too will make it down there and join in on one of your events. You can count on it. I was surprised to see that Patty Cakes and Cathy didn't make it either. I'm sure they were there in spirit.
Nov. 14, 2011 6:41 pm
Las Vegas blowout......May ??????? Stay tuned.
Nov. 14, 2011 7:58 pm
bd.weld - Thanks for stopping in! Yes, indeed Tom's Farms has grown and gone more upscale. I must say, their burgers were better in the 70's than they are today. I wish you could have joined us!
Nov. 14, 2011 8:01 pm
Keri - We missed you, Cathy Myers & Patty Cakes! Your girls would have loved this! We will go again for sure. Hopefully you will be able to join us in December for the AR Cookies Across America cookie decorating. I will keep everyone up to date as to those plans. I can't wait to see you all again!

Noemi - It is always a pleasure to see you and your sister. I hope your birthday dinner went off without a hitch. We had a lovely Sunday morning breakfast and then managed to find a great discount store to buy a few kitchen gadgets. Mauigirl and Sparky were on the road to Vegas by 11 ish. I can't wait until December - it will be here before we know it. Another wonderful day of laughter and fun!

AND, I'm telling you girls, the Irish Nachos are very good! [Not qanywhere close to diet friendly, but, oh so good!!!!] they also serve sandwiches and pizzas at the back of the wine shop where I met up with y'all. I'm not sure how good they are - I always want to try them, but always end up going back for the Irish Nachos instead . . .
Nov. 14, 2011 9:58 pm
Weeble - if you get to So. Cal - we will come to you! I would LOVE to meet you. I remember your initial Yeast experience so well - good memories! Checking in every 5 minutes - those rolls were a hit!
Nov. 14, 2011 10:00 pm
Lovecakes - Next time! For sure December 3rd. I will send you details. We missed you, Cathy and Patty. Ah Sucks - I guess we will have to do another one!
Nov. 14, 2011 10:03 pm
Barb - Next time I will just get a hunk of cheese, a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine = lunch. I make bread all the time but the smell of that bread was amazing! Yes, I am a yeast addict!
Nov. 14, 2011 10:31 pm
I like my yeast (if someone else prepares it!) - but I am plain and simple a carb addict! Potatoes, rice, bread in any form. My favorite veggies are peas and corn - and my favorite fruit is banana!
Nov. 15, 2011 10:34 am
Btw, I don't know if we said how much we enjoyed breakfast - the food as well as the company =D Betty Faye's was a good choice! One of the places we mentioned was Zeke's (at Fourth and Vineyard) - it's one of Cady's favorite places - and Betty Faye's was very similar. (Shhhhh! Just don't tell her that I actually like BF'S better!) I am still craving my "breakfast burrito - no meat - wet with green sauce" from Brandon's, though! Gonna have to visit there soon!
Nov. 15, 2011 1:22 pm
As usual I am very late to the party. You get together sounds like the kind of outing that is righ down my alley. Thanks for sharing, I almost feel like I was there.
Nov. 15, 2011 3:41 pm
Barb - shhhh - I won't tell her - promise! We have to go to Betty Faye's again. :)
Nov. 15, 2011 3:43 pm
Char - you aren't late at all! I know I am still riding high after this weekend. I hope that you can experience this one of these days.
Nov. 15, 2011 10:26 pm
So much fun! Great blog!
Nov. 16, 2011 8:53 am
Thanks for stopping in Cindy. I wish you could have been with us.
Nov. 16, 2011 9:25 am
Sounds like you all found some really neat things and had a great time! I'm so happy the weather cooperated. I love to see the beautiful smiling faces. Miss you ladies....hoping I can make the cookie decorating party! I'm thinking I need to plan an AR get together at my new place....maybe beginning of next year? Anyone interested?
Nov. 16, 2011 9:56 am
Hi K-Dub! You know you can count me and Gabriela in!! I am always up for a good hen party. Plus I would live to see the new bride. Have you done a blog about the wedding yet? Please do see if you can make it to the cookie decorating on 12/3, it's already shaping out to be a very fun event.
Nov. 16, 2011 1:12 pm
I will be able to bring my other daughter! Hmmmmm - what shall I call her? xrayhands? (She plays violin and is in the deaf studies program at CSUN - to become an interpreter.)
Nov. 16, 2011 5:04 pm
Hey K-Dub, we sure did miss you! I will be at your home in a heart beat! You set the date and we will beat a path to your door! I REALLY hope that you can come on December 3rd. Noemi is making lasagna and baked Ziti - I am doing bread and salad and for dessert - COOKIES! I am so excited to see everyone again!
Nov. 16, 2011 5:07 pm
Barb! How perfect that would be!
Nov. 16, 2011 10:58 pm
bwahahaha, thanks for the wind chimes, B'Nana they are perfect and I love the sound of wind chimes. (I have heard that wind chimes keep crazy people sane as they listen to the chimes rather than the voices in ones head;P) They also make a great weather forcaster, if they are wet it is raining, moving- it is windy, white-it is snowing, faded-then it has been hot and sunny too long. If they stick to your lip, then it is frosty out and you will need some help. The chimes will cross over the border easier than that poor tractor with a burned out slipper. BUT the tractor would make a great flower pot holder.....Our boys had a small green tractor with pedals, like a tricycle, it had a wagon that attached to it. They played for hours with that thing and when they got older I could not get rid of it. I placed a huge teddy bear in the seat and planted flowers in the wagon. It remains part of my yard decor all these years later, now my grandson unhitches the wagon and takes the old tractor for a spin around the yard:)
Nov. 16, 2011 10:59 pm
...sorry I wrote a book, looks like I have been missing you or something:)
Nov. 17, 2011 6:00 am
Thanks for stopping in RNG. I am glad you like the wind chimes. :) You can write as much as you like. I love the story of the toy tractor. It was a wonderful day and you were with us in spirit.

Lela - I hope you saw my answer on the Buzz - Yes "Crock Pot" brand says their crocks are safe (without the lid) to 400 degrees.

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
