We Broke All the Rules....

Updated: Aug. 22, 2011 8:46 pm
We broke the rules - my husband and kids worried about my sanity.
I set the rules - as MOM, I am allowed to do that.
Then I met friends on AR and
I broke all the rules.

Child to mother,

"You are going where?"
"Do you know these people?"
"When you get there, drive by and then check in with me, OK? If it looks weird, don't stop!  Call me when you get there."

My husband watched me prepare for our gathering - helped move furniture and then would ask - "So, do you KNOW who is coming?"

Welcome to the AllRecipes Family.

Internet safety - 101
"Don't EVER agree to meet ANYONE  on the internet!"

Then I 'met' the women of Allrecipes.com and I threw caution to the wind and invited strangers to my home. It didn't seem odd at all - I 'knew' these folks.
It did take me a few days to tell hubby what I had done.
What could he say - the invite was out and we were expecting guests!

The day finally arrived - hubby pretended to get ready to leave -  he hung around to make sure no aliens were invading the house. After meeting Keri and her daughters and then Marianne and a few more he left for the movies, semi-assured I would be OK. By the time he arrived home the roars of laughter coming from the kitchen assured him all was well.

August 2010
Cathy Myers and Noemi - they only just met.
Don't they look like they have known each other forever?

Since that day, we have all become fast friends.

No, Ina Garten did not come to one of are gatherings -  Marianne and I went to meet her at a book signing in Orange County.

Although - I must say - Ina would like our group.

Then Mauigirl took the baton and invited us all to Las Vegas!
This time people flew in from all over the country.

Even AllRecipes Elizabeth joined us from Seattle and Candice from Oregon.

Baking Nana and LadySparkle

Mis7up and Magnolia Blossom both hopped a flight to Sin City.

Our LadySparkle sure does shine!

Can you believe that Barb and Candice just met each other.

Look at all these happy faces!

Christine and Cooking Up a Storm

Then Candice and family came to Southern California.
Marianne, Barb and I met them in Anaheim.

Proof!  - Marianne, Candice  Barb and Jill!
They were even waving in strangers to take our pictures.

 Barb and Marianne

I was not alone - other women joined in on these capers.
This is K-Dub -
She told us last year about her wedding plans.
Marianne and I found her mother on Facebook and we plotted and planned.
Best of all -
K-Dub really was disappointed.
She was going to miss the AR gathering because her mom had plans for her.

  Little did she know!

I am so glad I broke the rules -

Baking Nana - Stirring things up!

Great blog BNana! Sounds like you all had a great time!

As a standard of conduct and safety, most rules are difficult to live with. Breaking loose from them is (mostly) a rush! Looks like everyone had a wonderful rush!

Aug. 9, 2011 6:57 am
Great blog BN! And a AR family indeed.

Aug. 9, 2011 9:10 am
Another great blog with tears of sheer Joy streaming down my face as I read and remember such wonderful events and Friends I have made on the internet. THANK YOU AL GORE! BBBAAHHAA

Aug. 9, 2011 9:53 am
OK - Patty that made me laugh! :) I have a bunch more pictures to add - just have to get the time to do it. AR's blogging machine is a little lacking in this respect.

Aug. 9, 2011 12:12 pm
Can't wait to see more! This leap of faith is truely amazing.

Aug. 9, 2011 12:19 pm
Very cute, Baking Nana!

Rules are certainly meant to be broken in these halls & beyond! Not sure where I would be without all your love & support right now. AND, I totally enjoyed the Buckeye Gathering at Saveur's!!! I hope I win a lottery at some point so I can attend them all!

LOVE this blog BN! I love seeing all the faces and saying I know her! (or him) I will admit I received some funny looks from my in laws and my own mom when I told them about the get togethers! Now my mom has proof how great they truly are....and how AMAZING everyone is. Thank you for sharing! :)

"Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile." Enjoyed your blog Baking Nana!

What fun! There are rules for a reason, and some rules have reasons to be broken. This is a perfect example! Such fun to read each time about everyone meeting!!

Aug. 9, 2011 3:24 pm
I LOVE it and You used the picture I took of you. You all look great and look forward to attending another AR get together. Rules are meant to be broken.(sometimes) ;-)

Aug. 9, 2011 3:56 pm
Some rules just cry out to be broken! And it isn't as if you all haven't gotten to know each other before the meet ups. We have all shared personal things here that we may think twice about telling someone face to face. I love the fact you captioned the pictures so we know who's who.

Isn't it refreshing to know that you can still trust people? The AR exchange is a wonderful outlet. All of you are so fortunate to have been able to meet.

Aug. 9, 2011 4:38 pm
Lovecakes - thank you for that picture! I am the most unphotogenic person on earth - that was a good one of me, more like how I see myself. Thanks!

Aug. 9, 2011 4:52 pm
I love this blog! SO much fun!

Aug. 9, 2011 5:10 pm
Thanks for sharing the photos and good times with the rest of us, Baking Nana. Hopefully someday I will get to meet some of you. I know I must have missed a great time.

Aug. 9, 2011 5:21 pm
It looks like you all had a fantastic time. It was so quiet on the buzz lately that I wondered where all the regulars were. Now I know. Everyone was having a great time in Las Vegas! You all have a very special group.

Aug. 9, 2011 5:25 pm
Occasional Cooker - you are a part of this group too.....where ever you live you are part an the AR Family. Someday we will meet up with you!

Aug. 9, 2011 5:36 pm
I loved reading the story and how it can be OK to meet people online. My only disappointment was the pictures were cut in half! I want to see more! Maybe it is my computer. I just love Baking Nana. Think she is great. I wish I could make bread like her! Kind woman.

Aug. 9, 2011 5:47 pm
Great blog BN. As you know, I was sort of accidentally invited to the Vegas bash by MauiGirl once she found out I was moving there. It was a great get together and I hope to see all of you again soon.

Aug. 9, 2011 5:47 pm
Baking Nana, Thank you. I am new to this group. I am so glad I went on the buzz to the question, "What is a recipe group?" Then I stayed because it is such a great group of people. I would love to attend a future gathering.

Aug. 9, 2011 5:57 pm
Ah - Cookin Up a Storm - I will have to look for a picture of you! It was such a treat to meet you and have you man the BBQ. :) Indeed - we need to do this again. This time - I need to leave DH at home - he wasted WAY to much money on those one armed bandits! :)

Aug. 9, 2011 6:06 pm
Found one! Woot Woot! So many great people to feature. Folks - you would love them all!

Aug. 9, 2011 6:07 pm
Peggy - I think it is your computer. We really do have to meet - you are so sweet and somehow - I think our friendship is already underway! :)

Aug. 9, 2011 6:08 pm
AR Elizabeth - it was so great to meet you. You are a gem! Thanks for coming!

Aug. 9, 2011 9:32 pm
Oh My Gosh Baking Nana! This is so stinkin' much fun!!! I'm just loving looking at all these pictures and remembering how much fun we had in LV and then getting to see you, Mariannge and Barb again only 2 month later. You can really put a blog together so well. Thanks for the memories. I just love it!

Aug. 9, 2011 10:00 pm
You have been busy, Nana! I was looking for this the other day, after you mentioned that you wanted to write this blog - and I found the other two you posted. This is great! SO glad you wrote this and posted it on my thread so I didn't miss it! I miss you all! Isn't it time to go visit Tom at his Farm - or have some cabbage salad and cheese bread at Northwoods, yet?

Aug. 10, 2011 9:15 am
Hi mis7up - I am glad you like the blog. The picture of you was one Candice took. :)

Aug. 10, 2011 9:17 am
Hey Barb - I am game for another get together anytime. :)

Keri
Aug. 10, 2011 1:24 pm
I'm so glad you broke the rules, too, Baking Nana! I've thoroughly enjoyed the two get-togethers I've attended and I even met my best friend at the Las Vegas roundup! Mis7up and I hit it off like we'd been friends all our lives and now she's going to be my matron of honor when I get married next year!! I was so sad to have missed K-Dub's bridal shower, so I hope to hear about another Southern California get-together SOON!

Keri
Aug. 10, 2011 1:25 pm
Hey Barb! If you and Nana get together at Tom's or at Northwoods, I'd love to join you!!

Aug. 10, 2011 2:36 pm
Woot woot! I feel another Meet Up happening soon! :)

Aug. 10, 2011 2:44 pm
Thank you so much, Ba'Nana, for this blog. Aren't we glad we are rule-breakers? I remember the day when Patty Cakes, her daughter Tina, and I met at Five Guys to try out their hamburgers and to discuss the first SoCal meeting! We put the idea out there, and there you were to offer up your lovely home. Wasn't that just the best?! The photos just remind me how lucky we all are. Thank you!

Thanks so much for the fantastic blog and pictures. There are plenty of wacky people in cyberspace but there are many more great people! I met my guy circa 1997 on AOL (America Online). Long story short, John and I have been together ever since. So he doesn't blink when I refer to you folks as "my A/R friends". Makes me giggle recalling Mom's justified description of him at the time as "some guy from the Internet". :-) You all rock!

Wendie
Aug. 10, 2011 4:20 pm
actually it would have been "...from the computer", the Internet wasn't yet the common term.

Aug. 10, 2011 7:04 pm
LOL! I just posted on Mangel's blog about the Midwest Roundup how we took the leap of faith to meet total strangers. I hadn't seen your blog yet. Same topic, different time zone! Had a wonderful time in Vegas and chatting with some of the gals on the phone at the SoCal meet. My hubby was just coming into the room and saw my pic on the screen, so I had to go to the top of the blog and started pointing out all of my new friends (and all the others that I wish I could meet). Love the blog!

Yes....Keri & I are super-duper buds! Love ya. I hope that next week I get to see a couple of my favorite AR peeps. ;-) on my travel to Oregon. I can't wait to meet more of y'all being on the coast.

Aug. 11, 2011 7:08 am
Wendie - one of these days we are going to have the opportunity to meet. If there is one of these gatherings in your neck of the woods, GO! Thanks for sharing how you met your guy - now that was a leap of faith. :)

Aug. 11, 2011 7:10 am
mis7up and Keri - just look at you two! Fast friends - all from a gathering in Las Vegas! mis7up - I hope you get a chance to meet a few more people on your way across country.

Aug. 11, 2011 7:14 am
Keri - we sure missed you at Marianne's...but certainly understand. There will be other gatherings. At that gathering we had a new member join us. TryingCake was really brave & generously brought a beautiful cake too.

Aug. 11, 2011 7:15 am
Magnolia Blossom - I sure would have loved to be at the Mid West Round Up. Some day.....

Aug. 11, 2011 7:22 am
Hey Marianne - Yes I am glad we are rule breakers! I remember seeing the pictures of you and Patty at Five Guys....then an idea was born. Do you remember the reaction of the taxi driver when he relized that you didn't know what Magnolia Blossom looked like? LOL - he was concerned for your safety! :)

Aug. 11, 2011 1:10 pm
Oh honey this is a great blog. I am sitting on the lanai trying to get the energy to get some work done on this condo. (not very successfully BTW) Love the positive energy this blog spreads. LOVE the picture of you. LOOKS JUST LIKE YOU!!!! XO

Aug. 11, 2011 1:53 pm
PS Doesn't Ladysparkle perfectly personify her screen name?

Aug. 11, 2011 3:48 pm
Hi Mauigirl - LadySparkle really is a gem. :) I am soooo glad to have met her. Thank you for offering up your place for the Las Vegas Bash! What fun we had!

yes, Nana...I hope I do. We might refigure things a long the way. But as it stands...I'm trying for Mauigirl in Vegas(totally do-able) & Keri(as well as do-able) We are stopping to see a family friend in Albequerque on our way. But so far that's about it. I think Cathy Myers, needs to travel Keri's way and meet up too ;-) But I tell you, it won't be long and I'll see Toni Jo...hmm same town and all....I better hope I see her ;-).

Aug. 14, 2011 12:35 pm
this is fantastic!! I LOVE IT!

Aug. 14, 2011 1:33 pm

FF5 - You really MUST join us one of these times. Can't wait to meet you. :)

Aug. 14, 2011 5:43 pm
LOLOLOL! Yes, indeed! Sometimes breaking the rules so works!! Magnolia Blossom drove 8 hours in the rain to sleep over at someone's house she had only "talked" to. What beautiful faces you can see and meet when you break the rules!

Aug. 14, 2011 8:58 pm
Indeed Cat. So glad that the AR friends were there to help you celebrate your birthday! What a special memory.

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
