A Day to Remember - AR's 2010 So. Cal Meet Up
Sep. 26, 2010 5:53 pm
Updated: Oct. 2, 2010 4:59 pm

A month in the planning and the AR cooks of Southern California (& Nevada) finally got to actually meet in person instead of our vitual kitchens on AR. The house was a buzzz of activity. The kitchen was jammed with wonderful women sharing food and friendship.

Keri and her lovely daughters were the first to arrive. Actually, she was a bit early and caught me in my grubby clothes. Leaving her to make herself at home I dashed upstairs - quickly changed clothes - no time for makeup - ah heck who cares!

The party was about to start!

This is Keri and her lovely daughters Michaela and Theresa

As people arrived it was amazing to watch the greetings. Guessing who was who and then being hugged and welcomed like old friends who hadn't seen each other in years.

Women gabbing in the kitchen. The conversations sounded like a reunion of old friends and family.

"Avon so wanted to come...it sure would have been nice if she could have flown in."

"How are gderr and Claire? Has anyone heard?"

"Did you hear Tao's good news? He is an RN!"

"Lady Sparkle would have been here if she could. She sent us homemade goodies. So sweet! What talent! She is a blessing."

"Ken had a soccer game today - I am sure he would have got a kick out of this."

"Wouldn't Cindy Lepp have loved this? I am sure she is with us in spirit."

This is Cathy Myers and Noemi - if you ever get a chance to meet these ladies - grab it.  Within them is a zest for life.  Now look at this picture.  Do they look like they met 10 minutes ago?

Cathy made Pumpkin Ravioli with Basil Walnut Butter sauce.

Noemi made Chinese Chicken salad.

This is Cozy Cook and her mother.  This young woman is amazing!  She is poised, brave and an excellent musician....she can cook too!   AR really needs to feature her.  Cozy - you brought tears to my eyes - thank you so much for playing the piano for us.

She made Hawaiin Custard - Mochi

Komi says "Sorry - I didn't mean to snake your bread!"

Then there is Lady Sparkle - she wasn't with us in person but she sure was in spirit!   She made us all special homecrafted dish towels and dish clothes, napkins and angel pins.

Thank you so much LS for your loving contribution.  :)

You are a true "gem".

This is Ms. K-Dub....
soon to be Mrs K-Dub! Notice the ring on her finger?   She has picked a "keeper".

She looks quite pleased with her bench scraper and dish cloth from LS.

Oh - the FOOD!

K-Dubs Mexican Corn Dip

So good!

Keri's Taco Salad....YUM!

Marianne really out did herself!  She made this pasta dish from "ellenmoriah"  Ham and Cheese Sandwiches on WFDM's Soft and Fluffy rolls, Celeste's Meyer Lemon Olive Oil Spread...  delish!

Celeste's Meyer Lemon Olive Oil  &  Honey Spread

This is Cathy Myers - her gift of Lady Sparkle's Angels brought tears to her eyes.  Nobody dared to steal her gift.  In fact everyone was way to polite to steal anyone's gift.

Here is Goodeats - with her Vanilla Makng Kit and dish towel made by LS - she looks pretty pleased with herself!

Goodeats made Spanish Rice and her friend Vickie sent Spicy Mexican Beans.  Delish!

The dessert dicussion group. Such good therapy!

Back to the FOOD - this is the dessert table - better than Thanksgiving!  Nothing but joy & desserts at this table!

Starting at the top - Gabriella, Mauigirl, Keri, Tina, Patty Cakes, xraybarb, Noemi.

Just one of the desserts!  This is Mauigirls Apple Cheddar Pie.  Yum!

Here is xraybarb who out did herself  - she made her Personal Recipe Creole PLUS - Barbara's Cookie Crumbs, Gooey Cake and Pumpkin Dump Cake!

Barb's Creole

Pumpkin Dump Cake

This is Marianne - behind the "bar".

Marianne wants to know why one AR bag is so much bigger than the other?

Patty Cakes and Noemi - hugging like old friends!

This is Mauigirl and Keri.

These are the gifts that Patty Cakes presented me with!  OK - Patty - I know what to do with the Sazon and the yeast - but you owe me a lesson on how to use the Spiced Annetto Seed Paste!  This is new to me!

Thank you soooo very much!

I must say - Lovecakes really wanted to come - she had an unexpected emergency - she went to the trouble of making her Artichoke dip and sending with Noemi who was kind enough to run by her house to get it!  Now that is awesome!  Thank you!

Cathy Myers was sweet enough to call and let us all know she made it home safe and sound.  How nice is that?  Mauigirl called Sunday morning to say she was on her way back to Vegas - again so sweet!   We have a wonderful AR family.

XrayBarb and Mauigirl were the last to leave....even then we stood in the driveway and talked for another half hour.  None of us wanted it to end.

It was a day to remember  - for a life time!
Look what arrived at my front door this morning!

Las Vegas AR blowout! Saturday, May 14, 2011 Noon - ?????? @ Julie's aka Mauigirl
I wanted to strike while the topic is hot. This is a heads up for the Vegas get together open to ALL. May is a low airfare and convention month, so maybe folks can start planning a trip to Sin City to meet a bunch of wonderful people from AR. Will be posting more in the future and maybe we can plan some special events while folks are here. Viva Las Vegas!

It is so wonderful to see the photos! I wish I could have been there yesterday. I am smiling from ear to ear reading about it. This is such a wonderful site that I cherish. Thanks for sharing Baking Nana.
Sep. 26, 2010 6:03 pm
The meeting of the AR cooks, sounds like everyone had a great time. Thanks for sharing it with all of us who couldn't attend. The smiling faces speaks volumes of the special bond so many of us share. Blessings to you all!
Sep. 26, 2010 6:16 pm
Thanks MSC - I have so many more photos to add - my frustration trying to get this written up and published is beyond belief. 3rd time was a charm - I will add more. I wish you could have joined us. We missed you! Next time.
Sep. 26, 2010 6:26 pm
OH Argentina - you would have LOVED this gathering - it really was like we had all known each other for years!
Sep. 26, 2010 6:28 pm
Baking Nana, what a generous, kind lady you are to have so many "AR Buzzettes" over at your home, hanging out together and eating so much delish food! BN, you just warm my heart! And, just GREAT to see daughters attending with their Moms! So many came together from every direction! - Glad everyone arrived and got home safely!
Sep. 26, 2010 7:03 pm
The camraderie was excellent & so was the food & there was so much-we all took home some "goodie" bags. What a great day! Thanks again to BN for hosting this.
Sep. 26, 2010 7:20 pm
Ahhhhhh! I've seen Patty Cakes blog too! Ahh! I'm so glad everyone had such a good time. So nice for you two ladies to share the day with us! Anyone want to come my way next summer? LOL Middle of nowhere, I know... Thanks so much for sharing, Baking Nana!! Now on to those cupcakes right?
Sep. 26, 2010 8:08 pm
BN, what a lovely home you have, and how generous of you to open it to everyone! Reading your blog and enjoying the pictures makes me long to meet the RB's that live in the Washington, DC area.
Sep. 26, 2010 8:15 pm
Why oh why is Iowa so far from California? I would have loved to join you!!!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:17 pm
Sue’sCookingToday : I must say that when I told my DH what I was doing he was hesitant - "Do you really know these people?" He hung around for a while, answering the door etc.... when he saw the group arriving he knew he was safe to leave. LOL - when he got back and the house was aroar with laughter he was grinning from ear to ear.
Sep. 26, 2010 8:18 pm
Oh - I forgot to say - we had people in their teens, 20's through 60's! It was one big family of foodies!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:19 pm
Thanks for coming Goodeats - tell Vickie thank you for us....I should have sent a present home for her. We will have to do it again. :)
Sep. 26, 2010 8:21 pm
Cat - if I am EVER in your neck of the woods I will be there in a heart beat. Thanks for stopping in! Yes - next week begins the baking of 1001 cupcakes! Yikes!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:22 pm
Wyattdogster: If you ever have a chance to do this you really MUST attend. It was an absolute blast!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:23 pm
Kathleen - you would have LOVED this! If you are EVER in California we shall throw you a party. These ladies know how to have a good time!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:23 pm
I am so glad that you were all able to meet and had such a wonderful time! I wish I could've been there too! :)
Sep. 26, 2010 8:23 pm
BN: I was traveling for a day or so. But after I got home, at my first opportunity, I started searching for some scoop on the SoCal Get-Together. Awesome! Of course, all the food looks fantastic! So pleased that everyone had such a great time! Thanks for sharing.
Sep. 26, 2010 8:26 pm
BN, you can bet your sweet bippy I'll be there for the next one and as I've told you on the RB, I'm just thrilled you all got together and everyone had such a good time. Good food, good friends and loving feelings all around. It just doesn't get any better does it?
Sep. 26, 2010 8:27 pm
Thanks Christina - it was a hoot for sure. I can't believe it's over!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:28 pm
bikerfamily - thanks for thinking of us. It was hot hot hot here and we all hung out inside - I didn't get pics of all the food and I should have got more of everyone. It was so much fun.
Sep. 26, 2010 8:29 pm
I LOVE what you've done, Ba'Nana! I am still reliving yesterday, and now I'm actually getting tired just thinking of everything that transpired this last week. My feet are starting to nearly touch the floor again, so tomorrow will almost be back to normal. Thank you so much for everything! (And now I need to go back and change who made the bean dip!)
Sep. 26, 2010 8:30 pm
Avon - next time we will give you more warning! This was rather spur of the moment....but it worked out really well. You always have a room reserved at my house! You are right - it just doesn't get any better!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:30 pm
I just realized that we didn't get a photo of the raviolas that Cathy made! She was a wizard with those! I swear! Talk about bringing autumn into our lives!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:33 pm
Thanks so much for helping to many this happen Marianne! If you and Patty Cakes had not had lunch together this would never have happened! BTW - go to your My AllRecipes - photos - find the photo and click edit. :) You can change the caption. :)
Sep. 26, 2010 8:34 pm
I looked and looked - I missed the pic of the Ravioli! I was too busy shoving them into my mouth! Maybe someone else got one!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:39 pm
I think K-Dub got a photo.
Sep. 26, 2010 8:42 pm
All of us who have ever hosted any kind of gathering understand what it took to be ready for us, Ba'Nana. There is always so much that goes on at the end of the prep time. Enough cannot be said for your hostessing and warmth and caring. Thank you for taking on this absolutely memorable day!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:46 pm
Thank you Marianne - I would do it again in a heart beat! It was my pleasure! :> (Still walking on air - darn - is it over?) Kind of like Christmas - only better!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:46 pm
Love, love seeing this! I so would have loved to be there. I'd also love to host a Texas gathering myself...but my house is so tiny we couldn't have more than about six of us! Maybe in the spring...when we could all go outside...
Sep. 26, 2010 8:48 pm
Again, I am smiling from ear to ear. What a great time everyone had and what a great person you are for opening up your home like that. If there is a next time, I'm hopping on a plane and flying down. No hogging the bed Avon :)
Sep. 26, 2010 8:57 pm
Hey, Cupcake! I was planning on doing this outside - had extra round tables ordered - then Mother Nature reared her head. 101 yesterday 109 today.....last Wednesday was 75! So - we move inside. You know what though - 15 women can all fit into a kitchen - we proved it! LOL. It is very do able!
Sep. 26, 2010 8:58 pm
Nicole - we will do this again and you and Avon best be here! Actually I had two guest rooms - one has a better bed than the other - you guys can duke it out over who gets the good bed!
Sep. 26, 2010 9:14 pm
Your kitchen is MUCH bigger than mine, BN! My whole house is less than 1400 square feet, but we do have two acres outside!!
Sep. 26, 2010 9:20 pm
Sounds like so much fun! I would love to have been there to enjoy the day with you all! Everyone one this site all share a love of food and recipes so there is never a lack of things to talk about! Isn't it neat how close we can feel to someone we have never met in person? I know there are some on the site I feel I "know" just thru visiting here. Great fun and great of you to host this BN.
Sep. 26, 2010 9:24 pm
alright claire and i are green with jealousy! baking nana are you sure you're not southern? that's down-right hospitality! anyways...i'm south ga. 4200 sq ft house ( just got the exterior remodeled), ft benning at my backdoor. ya need some grits, catfish, watermelons, pecans..or gator tail, come on down! i'm glad ya had a blast and what great pictures! i would have been passed out somewhere after trying all the chow! great folks here!...and better cooks..if that is possible!
Sep. 26, 2010 9:34 pm
grannygigi - there was never one moment that there was a lull in the conversation! Nope, sorry - that is not true - when Cozy sat down to play the piano the house went silent except for the beautiful music coming from this gorgeous young woman! Then the room erupted in applause. From there on out it was non stop chatter! :>
Sep. 26, 2010 9:36 pm
Oh gderr - you and Claire would have had a ball. If I ever find my way to Ft. Benning I will be knocking at your door! Yes - we have some great folks here! Bless you all.
Sep. 26, 2010 9:47 pm
How fantastic for you all!! I know all your families thought you were nuts at first. A few years ago, I hosted friends I met in an online support group and they came in from all over the country. We all considered ourselves lucky our families didn't have us committed before we had the chance to get together, lol. And once we met, it wasn't like "meeting" for the first time, it was like seeing old friends, so I can relate to how special this day must have been for you all!
Sep. 26, 2010 9:51 pm
Mimosa - you are so right - we knew each other we just had never met face to face...LOL!
Sep. 26, 2010 9:53 pm
Oh, this sounds like it was so much fun! If there is ever a Midwest gathering of AR, I am definitely up for it. Great pics, great looking food, you made me hungry! Looks like the party was a blast, and it was very generous of you to host, Baking Nana.
Sep. 26, 2010 10:00 pm
Kristen: Don't ever miss a chance to do one of these. Such wonderful people - wonderful memories. I am so glad I hosted - we went for about 7 hours - what restaurant would put up with that? :>
Sep. 26, 2010 10:08 pm
Oh BN, I am Late again to class. Tina was hogging the puter and I just had to check in before my date with the sand man. LOL As I read this awesome blog, my eyes fill with tears of utter shear Joy and prfound happiness! Honey, how did you like my gift? Have you done pizza on the grill? It is easy peasy. I am still on cloud 9 and can not believe my good fortune in meeting all these fabulous Ladies. I treasure each and every one of you. Thank you so much Baking Nana. Hugs and smoochies to you for an outstanding weekend! Love to you all!
Sep. 26, 2010 10:14 pm

Sep. 26, 2010 10:28 pm
Oh good when she misbehaves I'll send her your way! bbaaahhaaaa. I am thrilled that you are a sap too! Tina ratted me out after Cozy gave her piano recital.I almost stared bawling and had to blame PMS! LOL I hope you enjoy the seasonings, try the skirt steak and beer. Super good! Love you and thanks again.
Sep. 26, 2010 10:39 pm
I have a bunch of skirt skeat in the freezer - a beer or two and a bunch of limes! (thank you so much - I must take a pic of those tomorrow!) I can hardly wait. Wish you were all here to join us for Carne Asada Tacos!
Sep. 26, 2010 10:48 pm
skeat = steak - all the right letters - wrong order! Geez I am tired - off to bed. :)
Sep. 26, 2010 11:01 pm
The afterglow just keeps on buzzing along. Great report.
Sep. 26, 2010 11:24 pm
Ladies you all outdid yourselves! BN your hospitality and kindness is heart warming! I wish I had thought of sending you guys a little "Irish" (dunno if I'll forgive Lady Sparkle for keeping her idea about sending gifts a secret!!) I was with you all in spirit on Sunday and when I woke at 4.30am (irish time) I snook downstairs to the computer to see if there was any news on the board yet & I happily read your thread before going back to bed! ! Its at times like this ya wish ya had a spare $!,000 lying around for an airplane ticket!!
Sep. 27, 2010 12:08 am

I'm with PattyCakes......tears and a great big grin while reliving this special day on Baking Nana's blog. I gotta tell ya....it was like arriving at a fabulous mirage after driving across the Mojave desert. Thanks so much Baking Nana. You have a gorgeous home and your hospitality rocks. Thanks also to your wonderful husband for being such a good sport. The whole day seemed a little surreal. Absolutely joyous and the women who attended touched my heart in so many different ways. The food was great...but the friends that I made will be the highlight of this day. I thank all of you for making this day a memorable event in my life. Thanks too for all the effort Ladysparkle put into the gifts. We were all impressed with your artistry and generosity. Now Baking Nana....I felt like I have always known you. Your spirit and enthusiasm is contagious and I absolutely loved the spark in your beautiful eyes. You wear your heart on your sleeve and I am grateful I was a part of this very special occasion. For everyone who wasn't able to be there, try to get one together. You will not be sorry you did. Maybe we should have one in Las Vegas in the future ?????

Sep. 27, 2010 1:19 pm
Thanks again, Ba'Nana, for hosting this awesome get-together!! It was SO much fun :-) I'm trying to get my own pics uploaded so I can publish a blog about it as well, but the picture upload feature here has been giving me grief. I'll try again this evening. My daughters are still talking about the day and enjoying the wonderful leftovers we were able to bring home. It was all incredibly amazing, but I think my favorite was Cathy's pumpkin ravioli. I definitely need to get that recipe from her! Thanks, too, for posting the link to K-Dub's corn dip! It was fantastic and I have a potluck coming up that it will be perfect for. I'm looking forward to our next get-together! Maybe at Mauigirl's house in Vegas? (wink, wink)
Sep. 27, 2010 1:37 pm
Oh Keri - I can't wait to see your blog! Yesterday I was so frustrated with the whole blogging thing I wanted to scream! What I ended up doing was loading the pictures to blogger - I would copy and paste each picture individually into my blog here on AR and then I wrote the "story" It wasn't as good a story as one of the ones I "lost" but I was pretty frustrated. :)
Sep. 27, 2010 1:40 pm
Vegas next year sounds great! Keri - did you get any pictures of your girls in the pool? They sure were having fun!
Sep. 27, 2010 1:41 pm

I LOVE that you guys did this!!! This former SoCal girl wishes she would have been around for the gathering! I just "met" a girl on TripAdvisor who was visiting Ireland and we decided to meet up for the hell of it after a few weeks corresponding...come to find out SHE was a foodie as well! We had a blast and will stay in touch for a lifetime...WHO KNOWS where you'll meet new good friends! Glad you ladies had a blast, thanks for sharing!!
Sep. 29, 2010 2:04 am

Sep. 29, 2010 10:49 am
Patty - did you see this! You best start planning my friend!
Sep. 29, 2010 12:53 pm
I just talked to Mauigirl and 5/7 is Mother's day weekend - she is moving the date to May 14, 2011
Sep. 29, 2010 1:46 pm
Mauigirl and PattyCakes, hopefully you will never need my services, but if you do, I will be happy to do what I can (= I will say this - a mammo is not what you want me to do to you - I haven't done one for 22 years - not since my son was born (don't get many of those on graveyard!). But if you ever need a CT, come one down! (And, there is no way to do a mammo that is fun or comfortable - nature of the beast! But, better safe than sorry!)
Sep. 29, 2010 2:33 pm
Ok, this just made me CRY!!! HOW FUN! SO GREAT to put names with faces! We were talking about doing this here in Phoenix. Me and Bev F...I need to contact her to see how she is doing. AWESOME ladies!

Sep. 30, 2010 5:09 pm
WOW....this looks like so much fun...what a great idea! Thank you for sharing this with all of us.....looks like a blast!
Sep. 30, 2010 5:51 pm

Sep. 30, 2010 5:53 pm
Mauigirl - Komi is a sweetheart and would never take food off the table but if it hits the floor - all bets are off! If I am cooking and I say, "uh-oh - shoot" she is there in a flash - she knows that I have spilled. She is glad to be the clean up crew!
Sep. 30, 2010 5:56 pm
Daisy Mae - you would have loved this gathering so much! What a great group of down to earth - loving - caring - sharing people! All ages - it didn't matter. It was one big happy family. I would do this again in a heart beat!
Sep. 30, 2010 6:16 pm
Hi, Baking Nana - That was so wonderful that you got to host these ladies from the AR. Wish I lived nearby! It was also neat getting a face to put with their name. I didn't read about it until the day of. I would have probably made some cookies or something and sent them! Either way this is off the topic, but I wanted to thank you very much for the caring information you gave me that day about my thyroid meds. I did make another appointment with my dr. that week, before the one set for 3 months out! I had all of the same symptoms as you had explained. He upped my dosage, as it was still way too low, and I feel great now!!! Much appreciated, Sarah "Baker Bee."
Sep. 30, 2010 7:01 pm
Ahhhh - I am so glad Sarah! This is a great community! One big loving, caring kitchen - as it should be! I feel so blessed to have been able to meet these awesome people! I wish you could have been here with us! You would have loved it!

About Me
Every morning my granddaughter calls and says, "Good morning Nana. Whatcha doing? Are you baking Nana?" Hence my name, Baking Nana. I love to bake bread and never get tired of it. Yeast is additive! Visit me at BakingNana.com If you would like to contact me directly please use the 'Contact Me' on my site. http://bakingnana.com/contact-me/
My favorite things to cook
I go through phases, Asian for a while then Italian then on to something else. I love experimenting with new flavors and different spices. Some times my husband will ask if we will ever have "ordinary" food again. Once in a while I have to toss him a burger just to keep quite! Actually, he is a good sport and my favorite taste tester.
My favorite family cooking traditions
In our family if it is your birthday you get to choose the menu. We have had some really interesting meals. In March we have 5 birthdays so we do one big party - what a crazy menu that is! Christmas dinner is very traditional. Sausage rolls, Prime Rib, Yorkshire Pudding, gravy, Green beans with bacon, Mashed Potatoes (the really fattening kind) and trifle for dessert. If I were to dare to omit any of those items I would be lynched.
My cooking triumphs
Mastering really great bread is probably my biggest triumph. I am always so pleased when I create a perfect Asian dish.
My cooking tragedies
There have been a few but none so horrible that I can't laugh about them now.
