Canadian girl who has recently become more interested in cooking at home in my tiny little kitchen. I am particularly interested in cast iron cookery! :)
My favorite things to cook
I most prefer simple (in other words not 25 ingredients,) flavourful recipes that are satisfying, reasonably healthy and not too expensive. I like it even more if it's a recipe tailored to cast iron cookware but doesn't have to be. :)
My favorite family cooking traditions
Well my Mom didn't really want me and my sister in the kitchen growing up so sadly I didn't learn too much cooking from my Mom. I have mostly tried on my own but I do have fond memories of my grandmother's cooking (she learned from her grandmother who came to Canada from Germany in the 1880's.) I remember my grandmother cooking hot roast beef sandwiches, stuffed peppers, chicken soup with the hearts in it, banana bread and her most well-loved dish...her stuffing for turkey!
My cooking triumphs
Probably the most loved dishes I've made have been a homemade chicken pot pie that took me over 3 hours in the kitchen to make, an apple streusel pie using phyllo dough, a white cake with lemon lime filling and a coconut and cream frosting that people fought over and cheese tortellini cooked with broccoli and mushrooms in basil and wine. I also have baked some very nice muffins and coffee cakes.
My cooking tragedies
If I think one thing is a tragedy, it's that I didn't have the experience growing up of learning how to cook meat and I still feel like a complete beginner in that department. I have never cooked a bird and I really want to try it!

Fluffy Pancakes
I had to skip the vinegar since I was out of baking soda. I also used wholewheat flour instead of white. They definitely did turn out fluffy! Overall nice recipe.

Roasted Chickpeas
Had to roast for quite awhile to get a crunch out of these but I do agree they reminded me of corn nuts as far as consistency once they were done through. I wasn't thoroughly impressed with them first time around but I might re-evaluate after another try.

Garbanzo Bean Chocolate Cake (Gluten Free!)
Tried it tonight... melt in your mouth chocolatey goodness! I would compare the consistency to a brownie. I topped it with a mixture of chopped pecans and brown sugar and it turned out nice. :)
