Simple Baked Apples

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2009
When I make baked apples I do it in the microwave. Takes about 5 minutes per apple. I do not use sugar, but substitute some of my Torani flavored (for lattes) syrup. My favorite flavor is hazelnut, but vanilla works well also. About 1 tblsp will do. I core the apple, place it upright in a glass bowl and pour all the ingredients down the center where the core was. I serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Makes a fast, wonderful and somewhat healthy dessert for a winter evening.

Angel Pudding

Reviewed: Feb. 21, 2009
Must be a typo: 4 cups (or less) of milk not 6! Why am I so intolerant of recipes with typos? GRRRRR. Anyway recipe sounds like a quick trifle. I'd use pound cake not angel food. Angel food just too sweet for me. Might try this if I were in a fix for a dessert.

Pistachio Cake II

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2009
This recipe is a favorite of mine for many years. I bake it in a bundt pan, then split into 3 "layers" putting the frosting between each layer. Because there is no frosting for the top of the cake, I dust it lightly with powdered sugar. It's a fun cake to make for St. Patrick's Day!

Idaho Finger Steaks

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! The Torch Cafe was one of my favorite places when I lived in Boise in the 70's. This recipe brings back memories. If you are in Boise, by the way, a good place for finger steaks at a restaurant is the truck stop that is on I-84, about 15 miles east of Boise.

Ashley's Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 8, 2009
I measured precisely and followed the directions as told, and I'm not a fan of this cookie. Half the joy of making choc. chip cookies is eating the dough but this dough tasted bitter, probably because of the Baking Powder and Baking Soda and 1/2 tsp.(!) of Salt. The baked cookie was no better and was not soft and chewy but hard like a hockey puck and I had to bake them 12 minutes just to get any browning (yes, my oven is calibrated correctly). I bake cookies by custom order for my clients and just happy I did not try these out on one of them. But use I can see for these is to now break them up into bits to sprinkle onto a frosted cake or perhaps to stir them in to vanilla ice cream like cookie dough ice cream. I am going back to (almost like) Mrs. Fields's chocolate chip cookie recipe for my cookie clients.

Roast Chicken with Rosemary

Reviewed: Jan. 10, 2009
My recipe like this includes basting with a lemon-butter baste, then sprinkling on the rosemary. I've had this recipe for close to 25 years and served it many times for dinner guests to rave reviews. It's a hit!! Also my recipe calls for roasting the chicken from 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. No matter what size, I've never had an undercooked chicken. I'm at about 300 feet elevation.

With my recipe, I use Monterey Jack cheese. It's a crowd-favorite for any pot luck.

Ranger Cookies I

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2008
I gave this a 4 due to the differences between this recipe and the one I have. I got this recipe from my grandmother. My recipe calls for just 2 cups of flour and corn flakes (instead of rice krispies). The corn flakes help to make this a chewy cookie.

Mrs. Sigg's Snickerdoodles

Reviewed: Dec. 3, 2008
I have owned this recipe since I got married in 1973. I make it with all real butter, however, and find that adds to the lovely flavor. I also add more cinnamon and a bit more sugar. To the reviewer who said that cream of tartar was acrid: perhaps your cream of tartar was not fresh?
