I love to cook.
My favorite things to cook
I love to make Chilli. I am also famous for my Fudgey Chocolate Layer Cake and for my Pumpkin Pie.
I make really good baked Hot Wings.
I really love to make soup with whatever is in the refrigerator.
I usually make cookies the same way.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love to make jelly.I think it is a tradition that deserves preservation. I grow grapes in my backyard, then make jelly each year. I also try to preserve and teach how to make a good Thanksgiving dinner. I continue my Mother's traditional way to cook the turkey, the dressing, Waldorf Salad, Mashed potatoes and gravy, and pumpkin pie.
My cooking triumphs
I have a couple of things I can brag about. I won 2nd place at the county fair with my tomatoe preserves this year and I have competed in several chilli cook-offs over the years, always taking 2nd place till 2010. I finally won 1st place at the Exeter Wild Hog Chilli Run with my "Parrothead Chilli".
My cooking tragedies
Last year at the Chilli Cook-off, we had a mishap. My husband convinced me to be the one to serve the chilli so I could answer questions about it. He and a couple of our friends were supposed to be stirring and plating the samples. Well they had a beer or two and let my best chilli ever BURN! Needless to say, no trophy for me that time.
Then, many years ago, after a long workday including overtime, I was baking my daughter's Chocolate Birthday cake. We had just moved, and I could not find my layer cake pan. I was using a Christmas Cookie tin as a substitute. I was so tired and I fell asleep. It was beyond burned.Tragic! We laugh about it now and call it the "hockey puck" cake, because that is just what it looked like.
