About this Cook
I'm a fairly recent transplant from Seal Harbor to Gainesville (for school). I cook for my husband, who loves meat but also professes to love my vegetarian cooking, and my cat who just loves meat ;).
My favorite things to cook
Fresh, healthy, delicious things! I also love to bake bread, because it gives my tiny apartment kitchen a soul.
My favorite family cooking traditions
All of the women in my family are feeders (in that if you get within shouting distance, we WILL try to feed you! Beware!). Also, my family's traditional mashed-potato-sculpting contests at holiday dinners: turkeys for Thanksgiving, Santas and snowmen for Christmas, rabbits for Easter, you get the idea!
My cooking triumphs
Recently, a vegan chocolate cake with hazelnut mousse topping and fresh strawberries for my mom's birthday. Also, my venerable and vigorous sourdough starter.
My cooking tragedies
All of the times when I've thought I know better than whoever wrote the cookbook!

Tempeh Reuben
I just started making my own tempeh, bringing the price down to around $1.00/lb (*Well* worth the effort--GEM Cultures had the best price on starter I could find), so we're going to be eating a lot more of it from now own. I started with this recipe last night, since my husband has often spoken lovingly of the seitan reubens I made a few years ago. Delicious! I poached the tempeh in water, brushed it with a mixture of low-sodium soy sauce, liquid smoke, and pepper, and seared it quickly in a little oil. Otherwise I did everything according to recipe, and served it with a green salad. Very easy, very delicious, and highly recommened (especially for non-vegetarian audiances.)

Hungarian Mushroom Soup
Absolutely delicious, even with lite dairy ingredients and cheaper mushrooms. A nice touch is to add a splash of red wine to the sauteed mushrooms, then reduce. Really adds a richness to the flavor. I 100% recommend using this recipe!

California Chicken
From a fellow Ingrid, great recipe! I'm a vegetarian, so I subbed some tofu with a chili-lime marinade for the chicken, but the topping is terrific!
