Cold Oven Pound Cake

I made this to design a friend's birthday cake. I thought the batter tasted chalky while I was making it, but thought perhaps just me worrying about the cake. Nope - the cake tasted terrible to me. People at the birthday said the cake was good, but my husband confided to me that if I hadn't slathered the cake in dark chocolate ganache, it was indeed dry and bland. Not sure how I could improve the recipe, but I am never making this again. Sorry.

Soba with Toasted Sesame Seed Sauce

It didn't have the depth of flavor I was expecting from the sauce. Also - the sauce didn't really stick to the noodles, it went to the bottom of my bowl so that all I had were room-temp noodles and broccoli. I may try this again by heating the sauce on the stove top with some ginger and honey.

Delicious Ham and Potato Soup

Cream Puffs

These taste fantastic, but do not puff up well in the oven in three attempts I have made at cream puff so far. I like a smaller puff, so this may be the reason. When I made larger puffs, they got nice and round and HUGE.

Fluffy Pancakes

This recipe only serves myself and my husband - we devour every pancake (which is about 6 big ones total). We did not have white vinegar in the house the first time we made this recipe - so we used rice vinegar. Worked like a charm and these are the best pancakes we have ever tasted. In our recipe book now and we'll likely be substituting for rice vinegar every time. I may try it with rice flour soon and do a review update.

Chewy Chocolate Cookies I

This were so ooey gooey delicious! Definitely make them no bigger than a tablespoon if you'd like them to bake correctly. My husband made these for a gamer party with marshmallow fluff for cookies sandwiches. They were gone almost instantly - 4 dozen (counting two per sandwich). Definitely a favourite and we will make again!

Artichoke Spread

Hit of EVERY party we take this too. All of our friends always request it when we ask what we can bring over. We serve it with rosemary bread, great compliment to the dip.

Four Cheese Sauce

Absolutely delicious. We use it when we make homemade gnocchi. However, after settling, it does tend to get separate and get a bit greasy. Not good to keep as a leftover.

Bryan's Sweet and Hot Tomato Pasta Sauce

Buttercream Icing

I use butter instead of the shortening for a better taste. Used this recipe in a decorating class to exhibit mechanical icing bags. Held up well and tasted delicious afterwards.

Classic Lasagna

Fantastic recipe! I use Italian sausage from the market as to make it extra spicy and I use 2 tbsps. of Kirkland's Tuscany spice blend instead of what the recipe calls for. Everyone loves it. Definitely worth the prep time. I make it for me and my husband, and just freeze the rest for leftovers later.

Hearty Chicken Soup

Tastes amazing! I cheat by buying a rotisserie chicken from the local market. I throw away the skin and toss the chicken into the water with the vegetables right off the bat. It cuts down on my cooking time. There's enough broth to satisfy my fiancé and I (he loves it, I hate it).

Claudia's Yummy Frosting for Cakes and Cupcakes

Tastes delicious, but it was way too runny. I had to add much more flour and sugar in addition to overnight refrigeration to get the fluffy consistency.

Cake Mixes from Scratch and Variations

I used the yellow version for cupcakes. Baked at exactly 25 minutes, they turned out delicious and fluffy. The outside had just the right crunch to it. I double-sifted the dry ingredients since I didn't have cake flour and the flour I did have was stiff. I have attempted the spice cake recipe, but my cake collapsed in the middle after baking it.

Apple Cake and Butter Sauce

I use this recipe all the time. My fiancé's favourite cake is apple and he says this tastes even better than his mom's! I use a basket cakelette pan from Williams-Sonoma, which has a perfect ditch for butter or caramel sauce. The butter sauce for the recipe is way too much, though. You only need about one third to one half the recipe listed.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

I made a couple of changes to the recipe due to personal tastes. I took out the Worcestershire sauce, bacon, and beer. I also used only 1 lb. of beef and had to substitute dried crushed chili pepper since I couldn't find any fresh. My friends and family loved it, including my ever-picky sister. I'm requested to make it all the time, and I always make extra to freeze for a "chili" day.

Quick Pour Fondant Icing

I used this recipe for coating petit fours and was a little disappointed with the end result. It didn't coat evenly and the icing was partly translucent in areas, allowing the cake to show through.
