I'm slowing down some, at 72; retirement is great, but I don't feel like spending the whole day in the kitchen much any more, but would love to have my four children and all the grandchildren at table, if only we were in the same town...
My favorite things to cook
Anything Southern--greens, green beans, fried okra, chicken and dumplings, pies, fried catfish, light bread, whatever people like to eat. I love to see a clean plate.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I learned to cook by watching my maternal grandmother, and still use some of her recipes, but I'll never eat fig preserves again (we had 3 trees). She added potatoes to her chili (I imagine to make it go farther) and my family still prefers it that way.
My cooking triumphs
I think it's a triumph to still love to cook at age 72! Just inherited a bread machine, and having a great time with it, but I still love to knead the old fashioned way.
My cooking tragedies
Just this morning, my pre-baked pie crust shell, for banana cream pie, slumped down in the pan, in spite of all precautions! How many times do I have to go down this road?!!
