Sweet and Sour Sauce I

Reviewed: Dec. 10, 2012
Needed a quick sauce to go with meatballs in the slow cooker, and I happened to have all of the ingredients for this one so I gave it a whirl... very glad I did! The house smelled amazing the whole time they were cooking and it tasted just like, well, sweet and sour sauce! Thanks for sharing this recipe :D

S'mores Crumb Bars

Reviewed: Jul. 1, 2011
I couldn't help it... when they were fresh out of the oven, I spooned some into a bowl and ate it while it was still warm and gooey. Delicious! They're still good now that they've cooled, but I think I prefer them warm ;D I put them in an 8x8 pan cause I wanted a thicker bar, and used milk chocolate chips instead of the semisweet. If I make that substitution again I plan on either reducing the amount of sugar or eliminating it because they're VERY sweet with milk chocolate chips. Fabulous recipe, Darlene! Thanks!

Nitey Night Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 14, 2011
I've never made any type of meringue before and was very concerned that I had over whipped the egg whites, but the cookies turned out perfect! I lined the pan with parchment paper, used mint chocolate chips, and increased the oven temperature to 425. Thank you for sharing this simple, fun, and tasty treat Kirsten Chepeus!

Puff Pastry

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2011
I wish I could give this 100 stars. I've always had trouble making pie dough- I'd add too much water, overwork it, you name it. With this recipe though, the ingredients came together perfectly. I grated in the butter as per reviewers suggestions (a wonderful idea). I chilled for about 6-7 hours, floured my surface and rolling pin well, and had no trouble whatsoever with the dough sticking or tearing. I used it to make a chicken pot pie and it was incredibly flaky. This is just... the perfect dough for me. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU phaylock!

Peach Kuchen

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2011
So simple and tasty! I preferred this warm and thought the crust could have been a tad sweeter, but other than that it was terrific. I sprinkled brown sugar on top and added a little nutmeg (just because I enjoy those flavours). I had no trouble spreading the dough in the pan, but I used margarine instead of butter so that might have made a difference. Thanks for this, Sher15!

Strawberry Oatmeal Bars

Reviewed: Mar. 3, 2011
These were quick, easy, and very tasty! The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because I, like many other reviewers, would have preferred a thicker crust, and I even used a 9x9 inch pan. The recipe states you can use butter or margarine, but I used melted, reduced fat margarine and I find it changed the texture to more of a dough than a crumble, so next time I'm going to try cutting in cold butter like I normally do for crumble toppings. Also, I used half brown sugar and half white. Thanks for sharing this great recipe, Flo Burtnett!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough + Cupcake = The BEST Cupcake. Ever.

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2011
I had a box of vanilla cake mix sitting in my cupboard that I wanted to use up and thought I'd give this recipe a try. As I'm pregnant, I used jessamine689's recipe for eggless cookie dough instead (adding chocolate chips), and while it was very good I did need to freeze the dough for a full day to get it completely frozen. I also topped the cupcakes with Sharon Gerstman's recipe for buttercream icing. The results were fabulous! Great concept for a cupcake, lovestohost, thank you :D

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2010
I can't even begin to describe how much I adore these muffins... they are the best I've ever had! I made 12 jumbo muffins, baking them an extra 10 minutes. I also added a little nutmeg and clove since I love using those spices when I bake anything pumpkin. I might try incorporating some pumpkin seeds next time. Thank you so much for this recipe Barb! This is definitely a favourite and I will be making them over and over and over! :D

Canada Day Nanaimo Bar Cheesecake

Reviewed: Jul. 17, 2010
I'm struggling not to eat the entire cheesecake as I write this :P The only changes I made were doubling the coconut to compensate for leaving out the nuts (I'm allergic), and I made it in a springform pan. It has a wonderfully creamy, almost fluffy texture, but I don't find it has a strong nanaimo taste- definitely not as sweet, which is perfect for those who don't like super sweet desserts. I do wish it had more custard flavour to it and I think I'll use milk chocolate for the top next time because I found the semi sweet a little too overpowering. Delicious recipe, Jowolf2! Thanks for submitting! And also a thank you to CC for the beautiful pictures of your cheesecake which inspired me to make my own :D

Ladyfingers

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2010
I used these ladyfingers for the Tiramisu II recipe from this site and it was very good! They did have an eggy smell after coming out of the oven, but they didn't taste like that. In fact, they didn't have much flavour at all, but that didn't matter to me since I was soaking them in coffee anyway. It was their soft, fluffy texture that I loved. I also followed Liz McCleoud's suggestion of filling a whole jelly roll pan and then slicing the ladyfingers into strips after they've baked instead of piping- much easier. Thanks for the tip, Liz, and a big thanks to Roxanne for sharing the recipe!

Tiramisu II

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2010
When I tasted each layer individually I didn't enjoy the flavour at all and was concerned how my tiramisu would turn out, but once they were put together... what a huge difference! It was very creamy and delightful, not sweet at all in my opinion. In fact, I'll probably add a little sugar to the whipped cream next time I make it. I was always intimidated to make tiramisu because it seemed difficult, but the instructions are clear and it's just a matter of taking it one step at a time. I also made the ladyfingers with Roxanne's recipe from this site. Thanks Christine for the recipe!

Fresh Rhubarb Pie

Reviewed: Jul. 4, 2010
I followed the directions exactly. The pie was simple to make and the flavour extremely good, but it turned out VERY watery... not sure if it was something I did, or maybe the type of rhubarb I used. I'll be trying it again though, maybe adding more flour next time :D *EDIT: The filling thickened up quite a bit after refrigerating overnight.

Blueberry Crisp II

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2010
I didn't find this had a typical "crumble" topping, but it still had a thick crunchy top that I enjoyed. Because I didn't have enough mayo I used some fat free vanilla yogurt, and I also added 1/2 cup of oats to the topping. A very tasty and delightful recipe that I would make again. Thanks for sharing!

White Chocolate, Chocolate Cookies

Reviewed: Mar. 30, 2010
I really enjoyed the flavour of these cookies, but I did have some trouble mixing the dry ingredients into the wet. It made a very thick batter that I ended up mixing with my hands to properly incorporate the white chocolate chips. The texture was a little crumbly straight out of the oven, but I'll have to try them after letting them sit and cool for a few hours to see if that makes a difference. I'll probably try making these again with a modification or two, because overall these are very delicious cookies. Thanks for the recipe Amy!

Stovetop Granola

Reviewed: Mar. 21, 2010
Thank you so much for this quick, delicious, versatile recipe. I find it very hard to find tasty granola in stores that doesn't have any nuts in it (which I'm allergic to), so it's such a relief to be able to make my own at home and know exactly what's in it. I look forward to creating different combinations to suit my cravings. Thanks again for such a treat! :D UPDATE: I literally make this every morning for breakfast. I like to add cinnamon and peanut butter, and sometimes coconut. I'm in love with this recipe :P

Chewy Coconut Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 23, 2010
I LOVED these cookies! The only substitution I made was to use margarine because I didn't have enough butter on hand. They were definitely chewy (which is my favourite cookie texture). Thank you for a simple, tasty recipe!

Skillet Apple Brownie

Reviewed: Feb. 19, 2010
I felt compelled to try this recipe because I had all the ingredients on hand and it sounded delicious- I wasn't disappointed. I followed the directions exactly except I baked it in a 8x8 pan as I don't have a cast iron skillet and it still turned out amazing. We ate the whole pan in about an hour! Thank you so much for such a simple yet tasty recipe. I will definitely make this over and over again :D

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2010
I've always admired my Nanny's amazing cooking skills, so the biggest compliment for me was when she asked me to make her a batch of these because they were so delicious. Chilling the dough made it easier to handle, and I made loose balls with it before rolling in sugar to get the crackle top. They spread quite a bit while baking and I needed an extra two minutes of oven time. Thank you for a very enjoyable recipe!

Easiest Peanut Butter Fudge

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2010
I loved how quick and easy this fudge was to make! I also did the 3-2-1 adjustments as per reviewer suggestions and the flavour was delicious. Of course, given the amount of sugar it is very very sweet, so a small piece is sufficient. My only trouble was a greasy residue that I had to pour off the top after I put the mixture in the pan... however, this oil separation could be due to the fact that I used light peanut butter and not regular. Thank you for this wonderful recipe!

Easy OREO Truffles

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2009
These truffles are incredibly simple to make and have a very rich flavour. I halved the recipe, using only half a box of double stuff oreos (my favourite) and half a brick of cream cheese, which yielded about a dozen truffles. I froze the cookie/cream cheese mixture for about an hour as per the other reviews and it made it much easier to form and dip them. I'm looking forward to trying a variety of cookies and toppings. Thank you very much for sharing!
