Introducing… Our new Recipe Page!

Hi Allrecipeeps!

We’d like to introduce you to our newly redesigned recipe page!

If you are confused, don’t worry! We are testing the page currently, each time you come to the site, you have a 30% chance of seeing the new page. J We are hoping to make the page live to everyone soon (within the next few weeks) – so stay tuned!

In the meantime, you can click here to ensure you see the new page:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Hot-n-Spicy-Buffalo-Chicken-Salad/Detail.aspx?mvtid=b< .

Here are some of our favorite things about the new recipe page:

  • A picture is worth a thousand words! So many pictures – including a bigger recipe photo to make your mouth water, photos showing you what similar recipes look like, photos showing you screenshots of related videos…  and more!

  • Simplicity: you know where to look and what to look for! Through careful research and usability studies we found that our community was looking for a simpler, easier to navigate page.

  • Shopping list enhancements – from the recipe page! Making cookies, but have salt, flour and sugar? Choose to only add the chocolate chips, eggs and baking soda to your shopping list. No need to clutter up your list with items you already have!

  • Reviews: want to see the top good and top critical reviews? It’s easy with the new Recipe Page. See the three most helpful in both categories, right on the recipe page. Even better, see the breakdown of reviews by star rating!

  • More info about the cook who developed the recipe – what recipes they have saved, so you can learn more about them, and what they like!

We hope you like the redesigned Recipe Page as much as we do – and we’d love to hear your thoughts! So… what do you think?

I love the new page! I just looked up Cindy's Awesome Clam Chowder and the page looks GREAT!! I like that you can pick what you want to put on your shopping list, that's very helpful. I'll use that feature more in the future. Thanks AR!

Looks good but has some issues if you change the servings, and also add to shopping list.

Sep. 20, 2012 3:10 pm
Thanks Cindy! So happy you like it! KingSparta, can you email us at CustomerSupport@allrecipes.com, and include browser information and what recipe you are looking at? Thank you!

Sep. 20, 2012 3:40 pm
The Posted Recipe Above, IE9. If you change the Servings from 4 to 2, then click on checkbox "2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese " to add it to the shopping list, the directions are then showing incorrectly. If you look at the picture I posted on the following page you will see what it looks like. http://cookingwithkingsparta.blogspot.com/2012/09/allrecipescom.html

I like it!

I like it also.

Yep, so far so good! I love the side by side reviews! Thank you all!

Wonderful! I like the new view a lot. Nice job Allrecipes!

It is difficult to edit a review I made previously. I am not overly pleased with the lack of functionality and the difficulty in locating my review. I know I can look up my reviews but it was more efficient the old way when I had only to click on "review" to see what I had written. I do like the new look and the high res photos, though :)

Sep. 21, 2012 5:44 am
Clicking on one option and seeing ALL of the reviews at once would be simpler than having to see them parsed out in categories. I'm not sure how you think that's easier. I seem to be in the minority here, but I don't like anything about the new format!

Sep. 21, 2012 10:31 am
Love the new shopping list way! Only choose what I need! Brilliant!

Sep. 21, 2012 11:34 am
Thanks for the info @KingSparta - I wasn't able to reproduce in IE9, having the team look into it! Sugarnspice - you can see all the reviews. :) Click on any 'more' under a review and then 'see all' under the review! Hope this helps! All: thanks for your comments - I am passing them along!

When I upload photos to recipes, they are not saving to that recipe, and I'm not sure where to look for help on this. Otherwise, it looks quite nice with the new changes.

Sep. 23, 2012 8:11 am
Where's the nutrition info?

Sep. 23, 2012 11:38 am
Love the new setup, hoping it will stick soon enough (I keep having it flip flop :D)

Sep. 23, 2012 6:26 pm
I really like the look of the new format. There's always a learning curve with anything new and I'll be happier once I have it all figured out. In the meantime, is there somewhere we can direct our questions? i.e. how to make my picture "stick" with a recipe.

Sep. 24, 2012 5:56 am
I think randomly pushing the "new look" in and out in a live format is a bad idea. The help pages still display "how to's" for the old format so they are of no use in learning the new format. Seems like your staff could do the testing rather than the users. In my opinion, announcing the changes and providing some "how to use it" information would be a better implementation. How about a screen shot with some word bubbles or something. Anything would be better than nothing.

Sep. 24, 2012 12:24 pm
Seattle2Sydney: thanks for letting us know! We will look into it! Gmisner2: the nutrition information is below the reviews. Patches: I think that is a bug! But we'll look into it. Feel free to email us with any questions @ CustomerSupport@Allrecipes.com. Linda2d: thanks for your feedback! Updated help pages are coming soon. We haven't done a large scale test like this before, so we'll keep that in mind for the future!

I don't really care for the format change. I prefer the old format for reviews and nutrition info. Do I really need such a large photo of the prepared recipe, a photo of the cook and the recipes they have saved? No. Do I need help with figuring out what ingredients I need to buy? No.

Sep. 28, 2012 7:57 am
Hi - were you able to work out why I can't make my photos save to the recipes I'm uploading them to? I left it several days hoping it would fix itself but it's doing exactly the same thing still.

Sep. 28, 2012 10:40 am
Hi Seattle2Sydney! We are working on that - I am so sorry for the inconvenience!

Sep. 28, 2012 11:13 am
I'm not digging it. First off, I thought I was going crazy when I saw one format at work and then went home to see another format there. Second, I can no longer easily see if I have already reviewed a recipe.

Sep. 29, 2012 9:27 am
Myself I don't use the shopping list feature so that isn't a positive change, I miss the More lilke this feature on the left side. I hate that our reviews are NOT available to view when we click on r ate/REview on recipes we already reviewes. I use that feature to see if I have already made a recipe and if so how I tweeked it or if I even liked it. I refuse to SEARCH for a review to find that information, it is a waste of MY time, that really needs to be implemented. I don't take pictures anymore so I can't comment on that. I do like the bigger pictures.

Sep. 29, 2012 9:28 am
I guess I should have read before posting hehehe. Rate/Review and reviewed.

Sep. 29, 2012 10:48 am
Normally, when rolling out new formats, one is supposed to have tried it out in a test environment first... Not try on your live server and thus your customers and let them tell you what's wrong... The frustrations of your customers are avoidable if the new format was tested on employees first. Then, the company would be able to spend more time educating users on the new features rather than damage control and apologies.

Sep. 29, 2012 11:16 am
Well said merlion. I just saw the more like this at the bottom of the recipe :) Like it!

Sep. 30, 2012 6:51 am
I'm using Google Chrome and with the new page I can not save any recipes to my recipe box. The drop down menu works and then nothing. There must be a bug in the page.

I agree with Celeste and merlion. I like the bigger photos. I think that it would be nice to have a cooks photos linked to their review of the recipe. I do not feel you achieved your "simplicity" goal. To me it feels more cluttered and random. Especially with the review section. Reviews on top of each other was good, reviews on top of, next to, and diagonal are just random. I don't use your shopping list because I have a better system on my notepad. So I don't care what you do with your shopping list. I defiantly agree with the above posters about reading my own review on a recipe to see how I liked it and what if anything I changed. If I can't do that here what is the point in using this site after the first time I make something? I really despise the random pop up ad at the bottom of every page now. I click the X and then a min later there it is again. It would be ok if it would just go away, even if only for a day or two. But no, it is always there even if I "close" it. It is very annoying, not helpful and takes up too much space.

I would also like to be able to do paragraphs. The above post was 6. But your system globed it all together.

Sep. 30, 2012 11:01 am
Sorry to say, I'm not a fan of the new format. I agree with Celeste. I want to be able to click on rate/review to see if I've made a recipe and/or tweaked it. And I have yet to be able to view the photos of a recipe without having to click through a slide show. I want to view them in pages like before. Also, when I do get the new format, scrolling down the page is very jumpy and erratic and very annoying. There are lots of other bugs in this new format as well.

Sep. 30, 2012 11:25 am
Getting used to a new format is always a challenge (er Facebook anyone?). That said, after scrolling through the new format over several days, I didn't find it too difficult to read recipes or search for others. However, the new format did give me pause when I was preparing a recipe. The shopping function does not allow for the ingredients to be grouped together for each step. I find I was very attuned to that. I'll look, see, for instance, all the dry ingredients for some muffins, and pull them out. And so on. Not a real problem when there are just a few ingredients but more of an annoyance when there are a greater number of ingredients in a recipe. Just a thought.

Sep. 30, 2012 12:03 pm
I can't see the photos, there is a pop up ad in the middle of them and I can't get rid of it. I imagine this is a glitch that will be worked out. I have Google Chrome if that helps.

Sep. 30, 2012 12:19 pm
Ditto on what tash wrote.

I like the idea of being able to sort thru the review - except I can't - when it lists an excerpt of the review and I click the More to view the rest it never comes up...very frustrating. Also the continued pop up of the menu planner - we should have the option...never show this again to disable it. I agree with wanting to read the review and see the photo that was submitted so i can make my own judgements without having to scroll thru all photos and figure out which review went with the photo. I don't know about everyone else but it also seems like the home page takes forever to load since there is so much going on. Definitely need to work on some of the kinks...

AR says the Pics are so much better but when I click on the pic I do not see any but the one on the recipe.

Sep. 30, 2012 2:08 pm
I want to be able to click on rate/review to see if I've made a recipe and/or tweaked it.

Sep. 30, 2012 2:26 pm
I don't really mind the new format . I'm sure once all the bugs are worked out it will be fine . What I do mind is the annoying pop-up menu planner bar . There is already a spot on the page border for that option . It comes up everywhere . Viewing recipes , reading reviews , and even on the blog pages ! I spend more time clicking on that , than actually enjoying the site . Not a good thing . JMO

Sep. 30, 2012 2:46 pm
Now that the recipes show up in a different format how do I add a recipe. I no longer see an "Add to Recipe Box" button on the right. There is a "Save" button below the picture but when I click it nothing happens.

Sep. 30, 2012 4:36 pm
When will the 'Add Recipe' button be functional? Not currently able to add recipes...very frustrating. I want to keep an open mind, but there seems to be too many bugs that needed to be worked out before going live. Oh, and what's up with those annoying ads that I can't 'x' out of, a poll from Werthers Original wouldn't go away no matter where I clicked. Finally had to close out of the site and relaunch to get rid of it...That's just wrong... your subscribers should not be used as test pilots.

I actually like the cleaner look but agreed, there should have been a Beta test done internally before frustrating loyal members. That's Internet 101. Tried to show it to some friends enticing them to visit the site. I was totally embarrassed when I looked like an idiot trying to explain that you could refer to you reviews with a click and it didn't work; a valuable feature gone!! Click on a review and it takes you to a different one. Ugh! THEY won't be back and I am wondering why I am wasting my time doing someone's JOB!

Oct. 1, 2012 7:03 am
AR please fix this or I will not be back

Oct. 1, 2012 7:44 am
change takes time, drastic changes like this need to run smoothly and they do not. I think the new page is cluttered, hard to navigate but I was so used to the old look. Needing to find new places to click and extra clicks to navigate is frustrating. The rate/review button to see my reviews was a priceless option. I often use the my notes section of the RB but I also use the star system. When I hit the rate/review button I could see my stars, know I had made the recipe. If no review showed up, I knew I could find changes in my notes.

I'm having trouble adding things to my recipe box now that the website layout is different. I hit "add" but it doesn't do anything. I was able to select "Main dishes", but it doesn't ADD it, even when all ingredients are selected. Please help.

Oct. 2, 2012 9:44 am
As others have mentioned, I can't save a recipe to my recipe box. BTW - When I bring allrecipes up in Explorer, it is consistently the old format. Yippee!

TO allrecipes tech staff...Today the new format is showing on recipes. I am using Google Chrome as my browser. I'm able to see the reviews and able to add the recipe to my recipe box for the first time. However when I try to view the recipe photos I still have a little pop-up ad right in the middle blocking my viewing any photos and there is no X to close it out.

Oct. 4, 2012 4:21 am
Just checked on IE9 browser and there is no advertisement blocking the photos on that browser. The ad is over to the side as it should be. Just for your information.

Site looks good. Recipe page laid out better and easy to read, but the drop down menu to add a recipe to a folder needs work. Needs larger space to work around, maybe larger darker text for the folder names. Seems to compressed compared to the spacy area available for the recipe.

Nov. 4, 2012 10:32 am
The new layout SUCKS. It's harder to copy/paste information, the pop-up at the bottom of EVERY SINGLE PAGE (even when I got back/forward to the same freaking page) is annoying as hell, and it now takes many more clicks to look at reviews. Why do people feel like they always need to "fix" something, even when it isn't broken? Honestly I don't think I'll be back anymore, because your site has become too cumbersome to be enjoyable anymore. All my time is spent closing popup windows (YOUR OWN, not third parties') and using multiple clicks to get to simple things like scaling recipes and reading reviews. You're good, but you aren't worth that much hassle.

I have already called All Recipes to tell them of my displeasure with the new format. I always made it a habit to click on All Recipes every day. I many times would try one of their "featured recipes" and would usually check out the featured video also. I told them I will no longer be clicking on the site on a daily basis. The site has now become way too "busy."

I agree with Carrie Magill 100%. I couldn't believe how many think it's an improvement! I have no problem learning something new, it's that every single thing I loved about the old format is gone!! Please keep the old, I really love this recipe site, but will probably choose another that has a format that makes sense: clear, concise, and may even include a "print" button!
