I like it. It looks good, and it's very handy.
Jul. 27, 2011 6:25 pm
Nuthin' like fixin' whut ain't broke! When I click on The Buzz, I want to go straight to the forum section. Frankly, I was APPALLED by one of the selections! Consequently, none of it has any validity. On what do I click to go straight to the forums page and bypass the razzmatazz?
Jul. 27, 2011 6:27 pm
Hi MissMarin! You can get directly to the buzz by hovering your cursor over 'thebuzz' menu at the top of the page, and clicking on 'Recipe Buzz' - either on the lower left of the dropdown menu, or in the list on the right.

hey ARElizabeth, okay, can we add 2 features to the new style. Like on the Recipes spot "new" like when you go to the top and select appetizers and get to look new. And the 2nd, people ask for an easier what to search members. Can or is there a way to add a search bar in that spot, to search a member similar to searching a recipe. I know if I go to google I can do it there, but I don't want to have to leave the site to find the member.
Jul. 27, 2011 6:44 pm
One of the problems that has existed, that STILL exists, is that we post, as I did on this page at 6:25pm, leave the page, read some other entries, come back, and in this case, ALL comments were missing, as though no one had yet visited this page. I clicked on "Add a comment" in order to let you know that comments were disappearing, and up came the posting box with my message of 6:25pm, as though it had never been submitted. I hit "post," and ALL of the missing comments showed up, including a second posting of my first one. Not only does this problem persist, it's actually worse than ever before, because I've never before seen ALL comments disappear.
Jul. 27, 2011 6:48 pm
Well, I've been using AR and 'The Buzz' as it's not called for many years and have seen it go through many transitions. Everyone always freaks out... and then everyone adjusts. Thanks for working so hard and constanting updating the site. AR has grown SO much over the past few years (obviously since it's the number one recipe site now) so you gotta keep up with the times. The new look is very sleek. Thanks again; love AR. :)
Jul. 27, 2011 6:49 pm
Miss Marin, that sounds like your internet cache. I have the problem at work & have to hit refresh, but it never happens at home. I've been meaning to figure out what's going on with my work computer.
Jul. 27, 2011 6:49 pm
Oh and I think the 'Buzzable Best' is adorably named and a cool feature!
Jul. 27, 2011 6:52 pm
I just miss the way the reviews used to be shown. (Just the review.) With the new way, we have to click on the recipe and then on the review to see if it was good or bad.
Jul. 27, 2011 6:56 pm
It really is not that big a deal, I guess. But the photo changes will definitely be interesting to watch.
Jul. 27, 2011 7:01 pm
@MissMarin - Scotdog is right, it sounds like a caching issue. @Mis7up, I will pass that feedback along! @Cookin' Bug - thanks so much! @katio - you can still get to the page by following this link: http://allrecipes.com/cooks/Newest-Reviews.aspx, and am passing that feedback along to our product team!
Jul. 27, 2011 8:17 pm
Please do not be offended, but what exactly is the point of having a best of....in so many catagories over a 48 hour period? No offense again to anyone in particular, but some people just post constantly and if there is a chance that they will some how be recognized as "best" it will not let up. Same with recipe reviewing in that time period. I see where you would be setting up for a fraudulent situation by people just posting reviews as though it was a competition (which it is now). Have you addressed the picture uploading situation yet? I know all of you work hard to provide a great site and I appreciate it, truly I do, but I think you are making a mistake with some of these new and improved features. I really don't think they will appeal to the average person that comes here, it will appeal to only a select few.
Jul. 27, 2011 8:25 pm
Very, very well said, Avon.
Jul. 27, 2011 8:32 pm
Okay, so I now appreciate the dropdowns a little more, since I can now get to the actual Buzz a little quicker (=
Jul. 27, 2011 8:36 pm
AllrecipesElizabeth- i understand the need to make updates and improvements. hopefully making things more user-friendly is a priority. thank you for taking our comments. here are mine: 1) the explore tab having top billing seems rather unnecessary. the popularity contest does not help the newbies navigate the site better. i think a helps/FAQs would be much more useful. many questions are posted on the buzz that are intended for the AR office. 2) i would LOVE it if the drop-down menus could be at the very top of the site page. they are large. they open and remain open whenever i use the recipe search feature and scroll down. seems they could be there and be less of a nuisance. 3) the ingredient search is great, but the regular recipe search needs a tune-up. if i know exactly what i am looking for it helps. if i sorta kinda remember, it won't take me there. 4) the rotating reviews are used by many members. i think they should remain easy to access. 5) if weblink is posted, it should be clickable. especially since personal recipes are not searchable... well, phew. thanks for letting me get that off my chest. :)
Jul. 27, 2011 8:42 pm
Thank you Toni, and Zeebee, you did a great job of saying it too.
Jul. 27, 2011 8:49 pm
thanks, avon. there seems to be a lot of frustration whenever there are changes. the "we fear change" mentality is part of it, sure. but the concern i have is the most common complaints and issues are not addressed. with each update new problems arise, but not many solutions.
Jul. 27, 2011 8:49 pm
So far I see requests for a "Recently Reviewed" tab and a way to search for member profiles. I would also suggest that the recipe search be revamped so that if you don't know an exact recipe name or you misspell a word, the search recognizes what you're looking for. Another suggestion I have made in the past is a category for "easy freezy" recipes (that freeze well or recipes that have information on freezing for later use.
Jul. 27, 2011 8:59 pm
my stepmother is 79 years old and I convinced her to join a few months ago. Even then she was having a hard time negotiating the site, but with some work and me showing her around she got it. But she made me aware of how difficult it is for someone who isn't familiar with the site at all to get around. I would hate to see her trying to do this now. She will think she's losing it.
Jul. 27, 2011 10:02 pm
Avon, Zeebee, XrayBarb and Janet - thank you so much for your feedback! I will pass on to our development and product teams - and stay tuned! Thanks again!
Jul. 27, 2011 11:05 pm
thanks for listening, elizabeth! :) i just saw the way to add a review has changed as well. i'm liking the idea... the stars are still mandatory, but the review optional? that seems to be controversial around here. since other food sites allow "comments" apart from ratings, users seem to want to comment on recipes they have not made. if it's important that a recipe be made before leaving a review, why not state that somewhere on the review form? OR the rating could be optional... hmm, i wonder if just stating: "we'd love to hear how you liked this recipe you just tried" would clarify the TOS without being preachy? btw, thank you for clarifying 5 stars is best, but it shows above 1. perhaps that is more confusing? maybe 5= excellent. 4=very good. 3=good. 2=fair. 1=poor? or something more descriptive as a guideline... ok, i'll try to stop complaining now. :) on this end the fixes seem simple, but you can't please everyone. thanks for trying!
Jul. 27, 2011 11:58 pm
I like zeebee's 5-star guidelines. I agree with Avon that the 48 hour activity highlight seems a bit much. The photo voting daily seems like a popularity contest as it is. I rather like all the tabs at the top; they seem to be multi-use and I think they make navigating the site easier. I like the new look too.
Jul. 28, 2011 2:44 am
Now everything here seems to be a popularity contest. And we thought the photo contest was bad enough, god forbid how bad it'll get now with some reviewing/saving recipes and commenting inanely in every 48 hour time-span just to be "The Most ............."!!! I am not on Facebook (on purpose and by choice, I can easily stay in touch with those I choose to stay in touch with via e-mail) and I do not want my AR Buzz postings to be available to be viewed on recent activity on any Facebook account! Can someone tell me if my postings can be viewed on Facebook???
Jul. 28, 2011 3:58 am
good point Trish, even if you do not have a Facebook account, will you be 'featured' or 'highlighted' on Facebook via AllRecipes page on Facebook? I don't know, excellent question... and I agree with Avon and zeebee, they have made too many un-necessary changes and I do find it hard to navigate around things now, imagine a newbie indeed, they would get so frustrated they will look elsewhere for a cooking site....who needs a popularity contest, I can rhyme off several buzzers that will now post with glee over what you have implented...
Jul. 28, 2011 4:13 am
Can't say I'm at all a fan but I'll live with it, I guess. Where the heck IS the recent reviews page now? Can't find it.
Deb C
Jul. 28, 2011 4:34 am
Just an observation - The only thing that was consistently requested by AR users was to have the REVIEWS updated in a timely fashion as they had been before they went to twice a day. That was the most valuable page for many of us. Now there isn’t even a Reviews tab. No offense, but that speaks volumes to me about AR’s interest in our feedback.
Jul. 28, 2011 4:40 am
Agreed, Deb. That and the sham of the photo voting thing (which 90% of the time I don't even participate in, so not too fussed on that, but every now and then a lot of people get all up in arms about it), and security outside of business hours..
Jul. 28, 2011 4:42 am
Not liking the new site. It is too cluttered and hard to navigate. You just took the site right to high school! Who cares about most popular stuff? I can tell you I will bypass all of that stuff! It is fodder for drama around here. I would prefer you changed the rating system and the review process. A like button would be an upgrade or blocking "borrowed" photos or graphic ones at best! New users had a hard enough time finding the buzz - gonna be harder for them to find it now! How about getting rid of the ASK a question tab - that would be a real enhancement! Bring back rotating reviews - I found inspiration there - now it is just disappointing if not frustrating. Just my membership renewal 2 cents worth. All that being said - I do appreciate you updating the site, I do wish our input had move value to you in making those changes.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:36 am
It's just wrong. We have problems now with people padding the "photo voting" and "most helpful reviews". The way the site was reset under the "explore tab" only encourages more of this because now it is right there in your face and even though it isn't what it was designed for it creates a competition that results in alot of ill-will. It is also vague because what shows in this section doesn't explain how it is determined and when you click into one of the sections it takes you to the person's profile or the recipe itself and??? What we want is an easy way to see the new reviews posted and more timely than what they have been, the new pictures posted, new cooks, new blogs, new recipes ... not who or what has the most. Thanks.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:40 am
Like others I would like to see the latest reviews tab brought back. That was one of the most valuable options for me, I have saved the link so I can access them but it's not the same. I'm a bit confused on the facebook issue and would like some clarification on what people can see. I'd also like to make a suggestion regarding people reviewing recipes they haven't made. Couldn't it be the same as the UK site where a box comes up asking you if you've made the recipe. I appreciate all the effort that goes into trying to improve the site but I do think it needs some fine tuning.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:42 am
I don't even understand some of the 'mosts'. There's a Hershey's chocolate cake recipe under Most Photos and says 50 photos. That's certainly not the most photos overall, and I find it hard to believe that 50 photos of that one recipe weer uploaded in last 48 hours. So what's the parameters of that "most photos" feature?
Jul. 28, 2011 5:46 am
Alex, they may have used that as a placeholder type thing, while they are still working on the design. I was wondering about that too.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:10 am
Alex, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that since it's Hersheys, there's your advertising dollars at work for you. You can always buy your way onto the most popular photos I suppose. This is no longer about the home cook showcasing what she does in her kitchen.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:12 am
I agree Avon....
Jul. 28, 2011 6:15 am
Yet the start of this blog post says it's to showcase us! I'm not going to bother getting real upset about any of this, it's mostly new look and feel and dumb additions rather than actual changes (except that Reviews tab!) but I just don't see the need to keep updating the 'look' of everything every two months when there's a lot more useful/important feedback we've been giving.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:34 am
These constant, superficial 'cover look' type changes do not in reality make the site more home cook/user friendly. At the same time, nothing that really needs improving ever gets any updating. Things like fixing the recipe search which is very faulty; allowing users to search other's recipe boxes, especially for personal recipes; improving security; making posted weblinks clickable; bringing the constantly updating new reviews page back to it's former self...these are just a few of the many things that would actually make this site more user friendly. A lot of members here have commented on how the feedback they give seems to fall on deaf ears. Who is AR really trying to reach out to??
Jul. 28, 2011 6:41 am
Change is hard to swallow somtimes, but I think as I poke around, I'm getting used to it and I like most of it. Biggest wish is that reviews be easier to access - I wouldn't mind seeing the "Holidays" tab be replaced with Reviews. I like statistics, so some of the "Buzzable Best" is interesting, however as long as people can vote on their own photos, reviews, etc....well, we all know the issues there. A couple things I would LOVE to see: ability to search another cooks recipe box - mainly to find their personal recipes or some other way to search for personal recipes; a way to "comment" on a recipe without posting a review, or ask a question of the submitter. Another thing I've considered is instead of just acknowledging that a review is "helpful", maybe doing a thumbs up/thumbs down instead. I don't know, though, feeling get hurt easily around here...but I'm thinking more along the lines of health police reviews and such. The FB interface I'm ok with now that I see what it looks like when I log out of FB! ;) Anyway, that's my 2 cents for now....thanks for your continued efforts!
Jul. 28, 2011 6:42 am
First, it would be great if the users of this site were given a chance to have some input on changes. It is us that help newbies navigate and it is certainly us that put up with photo vote padding, most helpful review padding and all that entails. We have been asking for easier navigation (we get more difficult navigation) FAQ's, after hours security for grossly inappropriate photos, rotating reviews, user friendly recipe search (leaving off an "S" or using "S" instead of of "C" or "K" prevents us from finding what we are after. But now we have Prom Queen contests and a bunch of other useless information. I bought and paid for a membership for a site I enjoyed using, but it keeps changing. Your membership is your best resource for ideas on how to improve this site, not some guy who's main interest is his IT Diploma! I am dissapointed and feel like our opinions don't matter a bit to AR. Thank you AR, for your interest in us :(
Jul. 28, 2011 6:48 am
I agree these changes just make it harder to navigate. I tend to embrace change because it is unavoidable and it is better to welcome it. Not liking the changes here AR Elizabeth.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:50 am
Wish list: 1) Latest reviews back (and be TRULY the *latest* reviews, that they are refreshed all day long) 2) Are the popularity contests necessary to enhance our cooking / baking experience in any way, shape, or form (except to cause more drama) 3) Use just one option to say "Recommend a recipe or ask a question" all in one sentence 4)On the recipe search option, could it be more user friendly...i.e. in case you spell quesadilla wrong (see, I can't get it right even as an example)the search feature is smart enough to say "did you mean...." That function seems wonky a lot of the time for different parameters that we enter. Sometimes you put in the words feta cheese and you get 1000 options and sometimes 28.... really out there differences 5) Functionality to find an AR member to ask them a direct question 6) A way to query posts that were on within the past 48 hours. Sometimes you read the question and you skim through it, and the next morning you realize you need that info. Instead of having to go through 10 pages of posts,,,one by one, is there a way we could query by topic what was in a post. (does that makes sense)? I know we can see our own posts..... And finally, thanks for letting us post our wish lists!!!! The next part.... would you let us know if any of these things are possible?? Thx!!
Jul. 28, 2011 6:53 am
Okay, somebody posted a link for the newest reviewed recipes. I've been trying to find it on my own most of this morning and have failed miserably. I've spent waaaaay too much time looking for something that used to be right there. However, I did find the most pictures, most posts. Who cares?!?! I am NOT intersted. You're creating a huge monster by adding that. I can see it now. People will be saving their photos and recipe reviews, etc for days and then upload them just to be the Top Dog. Who cares!?!!? There's a lot other stuff I don't care for, too. In one word, I find it 'unnavigable'. And, I've been here for many years to know where to find nearly everything. No more. I'm sorry AR but I do not like the changes.
Jul. 28, 2011 7:01 am
I have been on this website for many years, was a smurf, didn't need the extras so dropped that. We have been on vacation for a couple weeks, so not on almost daily like I usually am. Was there a post about the upcoming changes? Did AR let members know how to navigate around the redesigned page? I think that would have been the best way to handle the situation... too late now. They should have a page explaining the changes and how to re navigate. Perhaps a tab that is up their for a month or so.
Jul. 28, 2011 7:31 am
I much prefered the Newest Reviewed Recipes in the former format. The only other issue for me is one AR continues to ignore. Request a Recipe/Ask a Qustion in one would work so much better. People often request a recipe under the question and we are unable to link recipes to them. Thank you for working on making the site better for everyone.
Jul. 28, 2011 8:01 am
Hi AR Elizabeth, I think we need time to adjust to the changes. However, I agree with some of the others in that I miss viewing the latest reviews displayed by review. Also, I agree with previous request that I would like to search for members. I would also like to search the Buzzer archives in case there was already a discussion on a question I have. Maybe it would be good to have a buzzer FAQs. That could be helpful to new users or new cooks.
Jul. 28, 2011 8:06 am
It appears that several off the "mosts" are very closely aligned with all the things that are constantly complained about on the buzz. Did someone monitor the buzz, collect all the hot button topics that cause drama, and then decide to showcase them ?!?. This seems like a huge backward move in both climate and content while so many basic things do not work correctly and so many users (new and old) still have a hard time finding basic elements of the site: reviews, FAQ, help topics, etc.
Jul. 28, 2011 8:06 am
Jillyjo, this just happened last night and the only precursor was a post that "We will be doing site maitenance...."
Jul. 28, 2011 8:15 am
Hi, just to add my 2 pennies worth. Not a fan of the new set up. Before, it was simple, one click and we were there. I use this site as a fun site with serious cooking learning re reviews. discussions and advice. I think it is great as are the buzzers on it. They are the important ones, not who does what.!!! I have no interest in who blogs most or comments most as if in some form of contest. I know that it is not probably meant that way but that is how it comes accross. To me just a waste of time. Sorry AR, good try BUT!!!!!. 2 penny worth over. cheers
Jul. 28, 2011 8:18 am
The thing is (sorry, I've commented on this post a lot!), yes we'll adjust to the navigational changes. For me, that's not really the point. Why keep spending time and resources "improving" things that are perfectly fine and adding unnecessary stuff that no one wants, when there is LOTS of things the community members have suggested or complained about?
Jul. 28, 2011 8:40 am
I really appreciated AR trying to make the most of the site, but being a member since 2003 or 2004 I'd like to say that it seems to cluttered now. If I was a newbie now, I don't think I'd even join the buzz and meet all these wonderful people. I know, change is tough. BTW, where is the review tab? And what's going on w/ AR being linked to FB? I'd like to keep the two accounts seperate. Thanks for listening.
Jul. 28, 2011 8:45 am
I should re-phrase...I don't think I'd have the opportunity to meet these wonderful people in the buzz.
Jul. 28, 2011 9:15 am
Hi everyone, I am going to try and address all your comments! Thanks so much for your feedback - we ARE listening!
Jul. 28, 2011 9:26 am
Thank you for that, Elizabeth. It would be wonderful to know if any of our wishes could come true. If you do address them, we will know that for sure, you did read them and "listened". Hope all of you working there know that most of us do love this site and hope OUR input can help the cause!! Thx!
Jul. 28, 2011 10:01 am
There are a lot of comments. Your efforts are appreciated, Elizabeth!
Jul. 28, 2011 10:02 am
@zeebee – in terms of reviews, that process actually hasn’t changed. We do our best to remove all reviews where the reviewer indicates they have NOT made the recipe. If we miss one, let us know! For those of you concerned that this is a popularity contest: we intend to highlight our members who have contributed content! Each and every one of you here on the buzz (and many not on the buzz) contribute fabulous photos, reviews, blogs, etc – and we want to highlight our members! Updating daily gives us the unique opportunity to highlight different members each day. @DebC, Alex – we are listening in regards to photo voting, however, we have millions of members (and people without memberships!) who view and vote on photos daily. A few bad apples rigging the photo happens occasionally, but we would hate to remove a feature that brings so many people joy because of a few trolls! @Linda – thanks for the feedback in terms of new cooks, I will pass that along. @Alex, Avon, Scotdog, we are still working out some issues with the system – rest assured that we are not selling these ‘Buzzable Best’ sections meant to highlight our members and recipes. @CC Loves to Bake – we are always working on enhancements, including to other site features so stay tuned. @Christine M: We do receive that feedback often and are listening! @Carrie – we are working on process improvements to address those issues. @Lilcat – thank you for the feedback, I will pass that along to our team. @ChrisK – unfortunately, we can no longer support real-time updating of newest reviews, however, I will pass the request for easier navigation to reviews onto our team. In reference to your other requests, please know we are always working on updates – some are easier than others. @wannabe chefette – thanks for taking the time to provide feedback! @ JILLYJO – that’s a good point, we will see if that’s possible in the future! @MarieC – thanks for your comments, and feedback. @Occasional Cooker – great ideas! I will pass along. @Don, our hope is you will learn something new, or find a new Allrecipes member whose reviews or photos or blogs you like, increasing your “buzzer” circle! @Lovecakes – the Allrecipes account is separate from your facebook account. You are seeing your personal feed, and not the Allrecipes feed. No one on Allrecipes has access to your account or sees your feed, that is personal to you, and your privacy continues to be protected through your facebook settings!
Jul. 28, 2011 10:04 am
Again, thanks so much everyone for your comments! We do appreciate it, and use your feedback to guide our future changes and enhancements.
Deb C
Jul. 28, 2011 10:24 am
I just want to clarify that my comment wasn’t about photo voting but Reviews. Timely updated Reviews was a valuable resource for many of us.
Jul. 28, 2011 10:47 am
Elizabeth, first of all I understand it must kind of be a bummer to be you today ~ stop at the first Margarita bar you see after work and enjoy your evening! I have read and think I understand all your comments about the AR/Facebook link and although I wish that was my choice I don't feel threatened by it as I know darn well a person well versed in computers could probably find out almost anything. However, I would like to know how AR found out who my crossover friends are from facebook. I can only change my personal security if I know where to look and I would really appreciate an answer to that, Thank you
Jul. 28, 2011 11:10 am
ARElizabeth, does AR do any prototypes first and get feedback from focus groups that consist of long time members, new members, and people who have never seen it before so you get feedback from different types of users? Maybe this is done and we don't know about it. It is just seems that we were all surprised by the changes.
Jul. 28, 2011 11:27 am
I have been playing with the new interface (off and on)for about four hours and haven't had an issue to complain about. I do have a whine or two but nothing significant. ... My AR homepage is a button on my favorites bar in Windows IE and from the home pqage I have not experienced any inconvienience. I have searched, gone to the Recipe Buzz, read blogs and made a review without an issue. ... As for Facebook, I left that months ago because I just didn't like how vulnerable a member can make himself just by being friendly with people.
Jul. 28, 2011 11:29 am
I feel like someone rearranged my living room while I was away on vacation. LOL
Jul. 28, 2011 11:30 am
Elizabeth, you stated that AR could no longer support real time updating of reviews. Why not? You could before. The newest reviews are the most valuable tool to me and the feature I use most often. I was considering purchasing a supporting membership, but not any more. Not if reinstating the most asked-for feature is beyond your capabilities, but creating popularity contests is not. That's not how I would wish to have my membershipe dues spent.
Jul. 28, 2011 11:54 am
Elizabeth, I know you do your best, but sometimes the techies think differently from the rest of us mortals. Instead of all this 7th grade nonsense why can't they fix things we have been asking about since I've been a member? It can't be that hard to rewrite the code so there is only one way to address the Buzz. We are going backward on the reviews. First they took away the ongoing updates, now they only update twice a day and that doesn't even work correctly - every now and then reviews show up from 2 or 3 days earlier. But now you have to go through a maze to even find them! The drop down menu is a nice feature, but I would much rather have to click on a selection for it to open. As it is now unless you remember to move your cursor down whichever tab you are hovering over opens - annoying. To only show the first 200 items when we search is so out of date - we aren't DOS based anymore and I for one would like to see the 467th chicken recipe! I personally do not want my AR comments to transfer to FB or vice versa. It is unnecessary and personally invasive. I appreciate your responsiveness but am skeptical that any more attention will be made to our users comments than before. After all, what can we possibly know, we're just a bunch of cooks!

Not renewing! The popularity contest is rampant. Just look at the repeat names in this Blog.
Jul. 28, 2011 12:03 pm
I have to say I agree 100% with most of the comments made here. The new popularity contests (call them what you will, but that's exactly what they are) will do nothing more than create new drama as people start flooding in their blog posts, photos, Buzz comments, etc. I've seen certain members post six or eight blogs back to back that were nothing more than a copy and pasted recipe. Does that mean they're entitled to have their picture on the "Most Blog Posts" section? They're not truly blogging. And how about people who answer commenters in their Buzz posts using separate comments for each person they're responding to? Obviously those people are going to end up with "The Most Comments" while not really adding much new information to the Buzz environment. I know I personally reply to people individually and sometimes it's just to say "Thank you". I don't feel that saying "Thank you" three dozen times earns me the right to have my picture in the spotlight for a day! I'm also very concerned about the whole Facebook connection thing...not so much for myself, because most of my friends over at Facebook are people I've met here, but for people like Valali who would rather not have friends and family over at Facebook know who she is over here. She's not worried about individual posts being seen and she's not worried about people from AR seeing anything on her Facebook account. She's worried about her ALLRECIPES SCREEN NAME being seen over at Facebook!! If the accounts are linked and there is ANY possibility of her screen name here being posted over at Facebook, her privacy has been invaded! Why in the WORLD does EVERY SINGLE SITE out there suddenly feel they have to link to Facebook and Twitter anyway????? And, like many others have said, AllRecipes has made all these changes while ignoring the suggestions we all are continually making: 1) We wish you would eliminate the dual request/ask buttons on the Buzz. There is no reason to have separate "Request a Recipe" and "Ask a Question" buttons. One would suffice, since the posts all go to the same place anyway! I know you use demographics to determine whether or not the buttons are being used, but surely you must realize from all of our complaints that the "Ask a Question" button is CONSTANTLY being used when the person wants a recipe! That falsely drives the "Ask a Question" numbers up and we have to request that the person please re-post under "Request a Recipe" so we can give them links. 2) Many, many, MANY people have asked for a way to personally contact other members. I can't count how many times I have decided not to make a recipe because I needed something in the ingredients or the directions clarified and there was no way for me to ask the recipe's author my question. It doesn't have to be a full-on e-mail type system here at AR, or even an IM function. Just give us a way to contact someone via an e-mail contact form that would then route the question to the person's personal e-mail. I am certain you have the technology to do this. 3) Reinstate the real-time updating of reviews. I honestly don't understand why you can't do that. It was a feature of the site before, so obviously the technology is in your hands. Whatever change you made that caused the site to be unable to support this needs to be UN-changed. 3) Better monitoring of the site on weekends and holidays, especially when it comes to submitted photos. Several of us regular members have even volunteered to be monitors. All we would need is the cell phone number of an AR staffer who has the capability to remove inappropriate content so we could report this content and it could be removed in a timely manner, instead of having to wait for 9:00 a.m. Monday morning for a sexually explicit photo that was posted on Friday evening to be removed. AR - please open your ears and start listening to your members. We are asking for things and you just keep throwing unnecessary junk our way instead.
Jul. 28, 2011 12:16 pm
I just wanted to mention, the Request a Recipe/Ask A Question buttons are actually a result of member feedback from way back when....I forget what it was, but there was a huge uproar over too many OT posts that people kept requesting a way to ONLY look at Recipe Requests, and that's how the two options came to be (you can filter on read requests/questions only). I'm not complaining that people keep bringing that up, it did kind of backfire since sometimes we click on the wrong one or maybe don't realize that your question will end up being recipe-related! But sometimes I get the impression that people think AR forced that upon us - they didn't.
Jul. 28, 2011 1:37 pm
Hi everyone! Thanks for your continued feedback! Yes - we are aware that the 'Ask a question/Request a recipe' issue does exist, and we are looking into improvements for the Recipe Buzz overall, with that feedback included. In terms of Facebook, NOTHING you post on AR will show up on Facebook - NOTHING. You would need to leave Allrecipes, navigate to Facebook, and share a link from Allrecipes (the same way you would share a link from anywhere else) in order for it to show on Facebook.
Jul. 28, 2011 1:49 pm
I am trying to catch up to all of your questions :) Bear with me - to those of you wondering how we decide to make changes: we extensively survey our almost 6 million members, as well as visitors as well as conduct other testing (as you describe, Occasional Cooker).
Jul. 28, 2011 1:52 pm
Okay...but can you clarify the Facebook thing a little better, please, Elizabeth? IF we decide to share an AR link on Facebook, would our AllRecipes screenname THEN be visible over at Facebook or would it only post under our Facebook name the way it currently does?
Jul. 28, 2011 1:54 pm
Keri, Dianewmj and BigShotsMom, we understand the importance of the Newest Reviews page to you! While I will not go into the technical components of why the page cannot update more frequently, what I can tell you is that it is not a widely used feature for our members. That said, we are looking into alternatives to make it easier to find!
Jul. 28, 2011 1:58 pm
Carrie - we don't know who your friends on Facebook are, and neither does anyone on AR. Facebook does. All that widget does is take past activity you have posted from Allrecipes and show it on that Facebook widget. We cannot see your friends, or your content. Does that make sense? Your Facebook privacy settings are what is driving what your friends are allowed to see. Allrecipes is not allowed to see your content. (And a margarita sounds delicious right now, thank you!)
Jul. 28, 2011 1:59 pm
Keri, it would post under your Facebook name like it always has. Your Allrecipes identity is safe.
Jul. 28, 2011 2:09 pm
Keri if you are sharing a personal recipe to someone on the buzz you Copy & Paste the URL (at the address bar on the recipe page) into the thread on the Buzz, does your AllRecipes screenname appear in the thread with the link??? NO. The only way your screenname would appear with a recipe is if you used it in the name of the recipe as I do with my recipes. Now there is nothing to stop a FB friend who receives a link to a recipe/thread/Blog on here from another FB friend browsing around this site and then possibly "finding" you. And if it "Currently" does not show your AR screenname why think things are any different?? My only concern above (which I no longer have) was that threads/blogs originating from AR'ers who are also FB'ers if I commented in their threads the thread and thus my comment would appear on FB.
Jul. 28, 2011 2:17 pm
I'm not so concerned about it for myself...more so for people who would like to keep their identity here private from those they interact with over at Facebook. Thank you, Elizabeth, for clarifying that! I hope it makes those members who were worried about it feel a bit safer with the new widget.
Jul. 28, 2011 2:36 pm
Well some of those people who would like to keep their identity here private from those they interact with over at Facebook, have done a great job all day today over on the Buzz expressing their concerns on this FB issue.
Jul. 28, 2011 3:06 pm
Thank you Elizabeth, I am now confident with my security settings so the FB issue is a non-issue for me:)
Jul. 28, 2011 4:10 pm
I have changed my Facebook settings to hide my links from everyone on facebook. Why are they are still showing up here? If I chose to hide my links then they shouldn't be here.
Jul. 28, 2011 4:21 pm
LMP - anyone ever call you stubborn, lol? And, I mean that in the nicest way. Only you can see that. If you don't want to see it, log out of facebook before popping over here.
Jul. 28, 2011 4:25 pm
no SD I don't want other people seeing my link over here..
Jul. 28, 2011 4:28 pm
i have turned off access to all my facebook posts to all my facebook friends so nothing of my wall is visable to my facebook friends but when my DD logs into facebook and checks the explore button the links I shared a month ago are still there.
Jul. 28, 2011 4:45 pm
LMP - Couple of questions to help troubleshoot for you. 1)Is your DD using the same computer as you? 2)When you come to the AR site are you still logged in as you? 3)Is it during the same browser session? -- for #1) Try logging out, then closing your browser, then have your DD come to it fresh. for #2) make sure *you* are logged out of AR, in which case the FB feed will not show up, if your DD has a AR account have her log in, you won't see the FB feed. 3)see #1. Remember the FB activity feed is *only* visible to you, for things you have shared on FB (i.e. posted on your FB wall) and items your FB friends have shared from allrecipes (ie. items They have posted on their walls).
Jul. 28, 2011 4:49 pm
1)no using her iPhone 2)no she's on her iphone 3)i'm using wireless and she's on 3G
Jul. 28, 2011 4:49 pm
no DD does not have an AR account
Jul. 28, 2011 4:54 pm
You need to clear your internet cache.
Jul. 28, 2011 4:57 pm
she isn't on my computer at all not even on the same server.. She is using telus 3G, I am on our wireless
Jul. 28, 2011 5:03 pm
I hope that everyone realizes that the people who visit The Buzz and who are commenting on this blog are an **extremely** minute percentage of the visitors this site has. Frankly, I think it's quite embarassing the way everyone is ranting and raving over these small changes. Of course AR cares what people have to say, but don't assume that you are speaking for the majority, or what is best for the site. If AR doesn't keep up with changing demands and continually bring in the number of visitors needed to keep this site number one none of us will be able to enjoy ANYTHING about this site because it just will fail to exist. I hope that the AR staff knows there are lots of us who aren't having any sort of meltdowns over the very small changes that have taken place. :)
Jul. 28, 2011 5:42 pm
LMP - maybe the links you shared a month ago are still visible because you shared them with others a month ago? Try sharing something new today, with your new settings, and getting your daughter to come to AR and see if she sees that one.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:47 pm
I'm not sharing one more thing from all recipes
Jul. 28, 2011 5:51 pm
I shared big bear stew as a joke around June 10th when the Canucks were playing Boston, now any FB friend who wanders onto here will see that activity without the context it was used in. I have the rep from White Bear Wines on my FB. How is that going to look.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:55 pm
Also I can't find it on the page I posted it to because it is the local fan page so I can't delete it. Facebook allows me the option of where I post and who sees it, but after a month it just shows up here.
Jul. 28, 2011 5:57 pm
My facebook link shows you shared Bacon Wrapped New Potatoes about an hour ago?
Jul. 28, 2011 6:02 pm
Fluck!! That was a test. I shared that on my wall when I blocked all my posts to Facebook to all my friends. It didn't show up when DD clicked onto explore on all recipes but the old ones did. So I deleted the link from my FB then allowed access to my wall but any links I post are still hidden on facebook but they show up here"
Jul. 28, 2011 6:04 pm
Elizabeth, you have clarified everything quite well. I actually think I know why the reviews don't update more frequently and I do understand. Thank you again for your very patient help.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:05 pm
I will say this though. I just experimented a bit with it all. On my facebook link is LMP's sharing of the New Potatoes, a recipe shared by Smitty and 2 shared by Miss7up. All of those take me to AR recipes, not their facebook. I have one link that says Cindy answered a question about someone recommending a recipe which also takes me to an Ar page. However, in the case of all of them, if I click on their real name their facebook page comes up. EXAMPLE: So I may know LMP in her private world but have no idea she comes here and is perhaps posing here as an alter ego. On my explore place I see a name that I know on Facebook but I had no idea she came here. I can see how that infringes on her privacy.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:11 pm
Not really, because you could have already seen whatever she shared on your feed on the actual Facebook site.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:20 pm
Nope, I can't see it on LMP's facebook wall
Jul. 28, 2011 6:25 pm
Ohh, the new link after she changed her settings. Well that's a Facebook issue, not an AR issue. AR can't control what FB exports to the recent activity thingy. There should be (maybe already is, I don't know) a Facebook privacy setting to not show any Facebook activity on other sites.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:36 pm
I think it is since privacy settings were changed. I guess the issue is that even if I didn't know LMP was "insert name here" I would soon figure it out?
Jul. 28, 2011 6:40 pm
Aha! LMP, if you check back try this link: https://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=132340553447026&topic=80#!/settings/?tab=privacy&section=apps&h=e386169e6faab6bfbefdf14d4aaa14a9 ... and Edit Settings for "Info accessible through your friends" and uncheck the box that says My Links. That's the only thing I can find that might prevent FB from exporting stuff you do there to the Recent Activity thing here.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:42 pm
Oops, I don't think that link works. The path to get there from your FB page is Account > Privacy Settings ... at the bottom of the page there is a small Apps and Websites section, with a link that says Edit your settings. Click on that and then you'll see the "Info accessible through your friends" thing.
Jul. 28, 2011 6:44 pm
All ready did that Alex this morning. Hasn't changed a thing here
Jul. 28, 2011 10:14 pm
I really like the "Blogs" tab. It makes it easier to get to them. Its different but I'm sure it wont take to long for me to get used to. I am having trouble remembering how to get to the reviews page. But I'm just going to have to relearn where it is now :) Looks good, nice job.
Jul. 28, 2011 11:59 pm
i apologize, elizabeth. when i clicked on rate/review last night, i got a html page or something other than the regular pop-up. it is normal again. but now i have yet another suggestion, if that's alright. at the end of AR's articles there is a place to enter comments, but they are not monitored. cooks often post questions there that remain unanswered for months. what about a link to the buzz?
Jul. 29, 2011 2:50 am
The latest reviews tab probably wouldn't be much of a concern to someone coming on the site on a rare occasion to find a recipe. It wasn't a concern to me until I became a regular. Some people like myself come on here everyday to plan their meals for the day or week. One of my favorite posts is in the morning that asks what's for dinner? I have become so much more organized, save money, eat out less, and even lost some weight. However, I tend to search for the same types of recipes. As a result I became dependent on seeing what others have made today. I am starting to think that most people surveyed only thought please make Allrecipes about me, me, me! I wonder how old the people were that were being surveyed? I wasn't sent any type of questionaire? I did not ask to be highlighted as the most posted buzzer. I like to be helpful and answer comments and I also like to reply if possible to everyone that left a comment to me. It's just courteous. If I was asked what I would like it would obviously be updated reviews as others. I would also like more nutrition information such as saturated fat count, sugar grams, and sodium percents. Maybe, I am missing the detail on that somewhere? Some of the nutritional information even seems to be way off. As others suggested I would also like a way to leave a personal message for a buzzer and to have easier access at finding people's personal recipes. Although, not said yet, I would love to have ways of organizing my reviews to pull up recipes easier or organize by categories. Currently, I can only organize them by date or how many stars. I can't always remember when I first made something. I give detailed reviews to refer back to them and I have too many to make them useful now to refer back to easily. I do love the separate holiday section. Thank you for doing that. I would love to see even more added about seasonal and holiday recipes and ideas. that is one of my favorite features. I also have enjoyed the ability to chat and swap recipes easily with others, and that you let us have our own page to save reviews and post photos for ourselves to refer back to. I guess, as a grown adult, I am more interested and how Allrecipes can help me cook better, healthier, more creatively, and efficiently. I also like learning about new food trends. I hope these things also were important to others when surveying or testing as they are to me. Thank you for listening.
Jul. 29, 2011 6:20 am
I came across something interesting this morning concerning the facebook/AR link. On the explore page I noticed a friend's name had posted a recipe on Facebook. I hadn't noticed that post on Facebook this morning because I don't make a habit of visiting all posts everyday. I had no idea she was on AR and no idea why she wouldn't have told me (maybe her alter ego is exagerated?) So I had two ways of figuring out who she is on AR. One was to look at recent reviews on the linked recipe and the other was to look up Cooks in her city. Bingo, all the pieces fit!
Jul. 29, 2011 6:34 am
See Carrie, that is exactly how easy it is for Facebook friends to find your activity here.
Jul. 29, 2011 6:52 am
I still don't get why that is such a huge concern unless someone has a true alter-ego or is being dishonest somewhere, but I guess I do respect the concern. What I do see happening is a whole lot of Alter-egos on AR being exposed, LOL Fun times ahead!
Jul. 29, 2011 6:56 am
I dont think it is so much an alter ego, Carrie, but more that some users might share things with the AR family that they would not on say FB. They may come here to vent, plan a surprise or just get personal.... I dont FB myself but if I had something shared here- say about my SIL- I might not want her to find out about it thru our FB connection.
Jul. 29, 2011 7:03 am
That is where my concern is WFDM, for myself I mean.
Jul. 29, 2011 7:06 am
Yeah, I can easily see it would be if you had AR as a "safe place" to come and unload about things you couldn't on FB.
Jul. 29, 2011 7:08 am
think of all the inlaw, work, and family rants that get posted here.
Jul. 29, 2011 7:10 am
however Baking Nana found out how to disable it so now I can't see other people's Facebook link here and they can't see mine..
Jul. 29, 2011 7:42 am
If you go to FB - Account - Privacy settings - on the bottom left is Apps, Game and Websites - click learn more...then turn off Platform Apps. Your activity on AR or any other site will be blocked. I don't play games or Farmville so it doesn't matter to me if Platform Apps are turned off.
Jul. 29, 2011 7:46 am
Thank you BN! - Wow, I didn't realize I had that many things enabled. Although, I also didn't know there were so many links between FB and other sites. I had set other privacy controls on FB, didn't know there were so many other ones. FB also has a habit of mysteriously removing once checked off/on boxes, so I would check it from time to time. So, glad though I did find out about these other privacy issues. You would think they would have you do that when you first sign on, but they mention it! Hmmm
Jul. 29, 2011 7:46 am
Meant to say but they "never" mention it!
Jul. 29, 2011 8:06 am
BN to the rescue once again! :) :) :)
Jul. 29, 2011 10:52 am
I totally don't have that option in my FB privacy settings. I have the Apps and Websites part (doesn't say anything about Games) and no option that says Platform Apps. Not that I care, just can't find that on mine! Weird
Jul. 29, 2011 11:34 am
Well....like usual I am a dollar short and a day late. I am going to play with this for awhile to see if I can get the details. The thing that I wish was added is a better link to each other. I am not talking, "sharing our email". A message link like Facebook would be beyond cool. Aloha from Maui to you all :)
Jul. 30, 2011 5:21 pm
I really like the "Make it Healthy" lady. Could you please make her recipes searchable? I like the idea. I have tried one of her make over recipes and thought it was pretty good and might try another one this week. It would be so much easier to find her recipes. I didn't even know the profile existed until one day I seen a reviewed recipe. http://allrecipes.com/cook/makeithealthy/
Jul. 31, 2011 7:10 am
For goodness sake can we please get the reviews tab back! Pretty please?
Aug. 5, 2011 4:41 pm
WFDM - it's coming back. Thanks for your patience!! Baker Bee - thanks for that feedback, I passed along to our content team!

About Me
Allrecipes.com is the world’s largest food site created entirely from contributions from talented home cooks. Allrecipes was first introduced in 1997 by five college students who loved cookies and had the early vision the web would be a fantastic place for people to find and share everyday food ideas. Twelve years later, Allrecipes.com is home to an amazing community where millions of recipes, reviews, ratings, photos, and blog postings spanning all types of ingredients, dish types, occasions and cooking styles are viewed and shared daily. Allrecipes grows every day as the community continues to share new ideas and experiences. Along with the original site, Allrecipes now has communities for home cooks in Australia/NZ, China, France, Germany, and the UK/Ireland. (Check them out! You’ll find links at the very bottom of this page.) For cooks on the go, Allrecipes is available free on the iPhone via the Allrecipes.com Dinner Spinner app, and web enabled phones at m.allrecipes.com.
