A New Look for the Allrecipes Logo!

Updated: Jul. 24, 2009 2:43 am
Hi, I’m Jeff C. and I head up the creative department at Allrecipes. You probably recognize the spoon logo that we’ve had since 2000. Recently, we decided it was time for an update and we’re just days away from launching something new.
We’re keeping the spoon, but moving it from between the words “all” and “recipes” – the “dot” of dot.com is now in the spoon handle. The letters are softer and more rounded and we’ve gone back to orange letters for Allrecipes.
In creating a new design, we looked at Allrecipes’ logos over the years. Here’s a brief history of the Allrecipes logo. The site was first launched in 1997 as “Cookies.com.” Shortly after, we launched “MainDishRecipes.com” and “SideDishRecipes.com.” In 1998, everything came together when Allrecipes.com was officially launched, with a recipe box logo. (See below.) That image dates to our “country kitchen look” and was designed by Yann Oehl.  Soon after, we went with just the recipe card look.

In 2000, we redesigned the logo again, adding the spoon – this is the one we’ve been using ever since.

We’d love to hear what you think of our new Allrecipes.com logo. Post a comment and let us know.

Love the cleaner more modern look and glad you kept that happy orange colour.

Jun. 9, 2009 8:33 pm
Wow! Looks great. I'm glad you kept the orange, too.

Jun. 9, 2009 8:34 pm
Hi Jeff, those are fun facts to know. I guess I never noticed the difference in the logo's, the 2009 one is the only one I remember seeing. I have been around and about AllRecipes since about 1998 but didn't discover the exchange until a couple of years ago. That's probably why Deborah B calls me " Oh foggy one". I do like the new logo tho. Waiting for the "something new". Can't imagine what it could be, you all are amazing!

looks very professional! btw, how much money are ya'll making? lol

Jun. 9, 2009 8:59 pm
I really like the new logo. So glad you kept the orange. Makes me happy.

Jun. 9, 2009 9:04 pm
Looks good, Jeff. Thanks for the info!

Jun. 9, 2009 9:07 pm
Yes, I like the orange. I look for it on my bookmarks on the top of my computer page (the little a-spoon-r in a circle) so I really associate orange with allrecipes. Looks pretty sharp.

Jun. 9, 2009 9:43 pm
I love the Orange. Go Beavs! (and the new logo)

The logo is very nice. Looks good, clean, neat. Looks grown up.

Jun. 9, 2009 10:41 pm
Good job. Love the way it looks, very clear. Glad you kept the colors.

Jun. 9, 2009 11:13 pm
The color ORANGE is stimulating and increases the appetite. ♥

Great look! I love the orange! I also like the spoon image!

Jun. 10, 2009 5:48 am
It's a nice simple design but I think it could use a black outline to make it stand out more.

Jun. 10, 2009 7:28 am
i agree it needs a border to the image and darken the com part - i have a freind who is blind (and she has taught me some skills in layout) high contrast works better with folks who are visual impaired - yes they can and do use computers that have special adaptive tools such as larger screens and much larger letters

Very nice! I love the orange and the spoon!

Jun. 10, 2009 9:36 am
Neat. I like the way the spoon does the dot in .com

Jun. 10, 2009 9:37 am
I'm also glad you kept the orange. I'm always on the look out for anyone carrying the signature orange AR bags in the supermarket.

Jun. 10, 2009 12:07 pm
Love it!.. Don't lose the spoon...

Jun. 10, 2009 12:55 pm
Looks good!

I quite like the new design. Familiar yet fresh. The spoon & color must definitely stay! No borders for me...but then I am one to dislike being "fenced in".

HelloHalo
Jun. 10, 2009 8:44 pm
Love it... I'd like to add that it could use a darker outline, especially on the com part. It's difficult to see for some. I'm with psb...I hate being fenced in!

Jun. 10, 2009 10:18 pm
It's nice to freshen things up once in a while. the spoon says it all,you know what knid of site this is.You pretty much don't use a spoon for anything other then eating your way to the bottom of a carton of triple chocolate fudge! LOL. When you look good, we look good. Thank You very much:)Patty

Thanks for the history lesson. As a fairly newer member it was interesting to me to see the progression. I love the new logo!

I *thought* something looked different this visit! I like the old and the new, but prefer the old for some reason - I think because it's darker and stands out more to me. Both are nice though. Congrats on over 10 years of all recipes! What an accomplishment for the site owners and employees! Keep up the good work! I didn't realize this site had been around for so long :)

Jun. 11, 2009 11:28 am
I like it, nice design and I like the colors too. Thanks also for a look back. I joined in 2005 and have really enjoyed being a part of the Allrecipes family. You guys do a great job and thanks again for the new look!

Jun. 11, 2009 11:44 am
Really like the new logo, especially the rounded letters! It's nice to freshen things up every now and then!

Jun. 11, 2009 11:50 am
I'll have to get used to it because I LOVE the logo from 2000-2009. I started using the site in 2000 and I have always loved the logo with the red and orange. I love when you guys change it up for holidays and seasons and I hope you will continue to do that to the new logo. I am a graphic designer so I can appreciate the need for change and something new. Thanks for the great website.

Jun. 11, 2009 12:04 pm
We'll make our Allrecipes square include the new logo ;)

Jun. 11, 2009 12:37 pm
The new logo is very nice BUT it has pushed the tabs: Recipes / Summer Grilling / Recipe Exchange / Holidays / Dining In / Dads & Grads/ over to the right!!!

logo design is so much fun! good job with the new look, very modern.

Not loving it. It was much cleaner and modern before. It looks compressed and the font is kind of ugly. Sorry....

Jun. 11, 2009 1:33 pm
Neat idea....Like the orange color with blue. yes the hole in the spoon makes a great dotfor .com

Jun. 11, 2009 1:43 pm
i think it looks FANTASTIC!!! i love where the spoon is placed and the fact that the "dot" is the hole in the spoon.

Jun. 11, 2009 2:36 pm
Love the new look!! Love this site!!

Jun. 11, 2009 2:37 pm
It looks very nice. I also like the clever way you placed the dot in the spoon. The colors look great.

Jun. 11, 2009 2:41 pm
Love the new, updated logo and also glad you kept the orange!! Thanks, Jeff, Elizabeth and all other Ar'ers for all that you do!!!! Allrecipes is Number One!!!!! :)

Hi Jeff! Thanks for the opportunity to give feedback on this. I'm a huge fan of your site and happen to be a designer by day, so I hope my comments will resonate on some level. I love the historical look at where the logo has been! I wasn't even aware you'd been around that long - very cool. I have to say, I honestly prefer the 2000-09 version best. I think using the dot as the spoon handle is a cute idea, however, I am never a big fan of using ".com" as part of a logo on its own site; it seems redundant and obvious I suppose. I think that it's a nice option to have for external mediums, as it sort of kills two birds with one stone. With that said, I could see it working still by simply dropping the "com" from the header of this site. Or, if you decide to keep it, I'd recommend moving the rights icon inline with the top of the "m", like it was in the previous version, as it blends better this way. I'm not 100% in love with the ultra condensed version of the typeface that was selected (which, if I'm not mistaken, is still in the same font family as the one prior). Personally, I feel like this comes off as the "diet" version of the previous typeface, which was more "hearty" and approachable. I really enjoyed that about it. One last thing (I promise!). I also am concerned that now you will loose the clever mark that was created with the A and R (with the spoon in the middle), as seen in your avatar above. I love this little guy - so simple but memorable because it so closely mimiced the old logo (with the spoon also in the center). Perhaps you could experiment with keeping the A and R, but moving the spoon to the end. Either way, I love this as part of the brand identity and really hate to see it go away. I hope you don't take offense to my comments - just wanted to give some input. I admire you're willingness to change things up a bit; some companies are the exact opposite. Personally, I don't feel as though the logo needed a refresh just yet as the old version still felt very modern to me, but I'm sure everyone will love this just the same. Thanks for a wonderful site. Keep up the great work!

Love it! You know what would be FUN Jeff? If the All Recipe spoon changed its appearance for the various seasons, holidays and other special events. For example, maybe at Easter the spoon could have bunny ears.. during the spring maybe flower petals.. summertime it could sport sunglasses... Christmas maybe a santa hat, etc.. etc.. etc.. It would be a fun way for members to write in with their suggestions of how to "dress up the All Recipes spoon" :o) And if not, hey ~ looks good even without sporting any extras. ;o)

Jun. 11, 2009 4:27 pm
I would like to see a heart where the spoon is for all of us who love to cook.

Love the new logo! You've come a long way baby! I'm addicted to recipe books. Now I'm addicted to all recipes.com I tell everyone about you. I love to cook and bake (wish I had more time to do it) Don't ever stop making new logos every few years!

Thanks for the info, Jeff. I do like the new logo, but... I think you'll find that new guests are less likely to remember the website name. The spoon breaking up the words "all" and "recipes" actually made the phrase easier to retain for us visual learners. Otherwise, the logo is very clean and contemporary. Nice work!

Jun. 12, 2009 5:23 am
Smart logo....maybe try shading some colors around it to make it pop! Love the website - - one of my favorite "go to" for the recipe I need. Another suggestion would be to have a 'top 20' receipe tab for breads...cookies....etc.

Jun. 12, 2009 5:59 am
I like it. My tabs have not moved "to the right". I would like to see a subtle shade on the screen other than white. I changed the fonts on my computer so that all the letters are in a style that I prefer. Keep up the great work ya'll.

Jun. 12, 2009 8:58 am
Seems like everyone likes the logo. I like it all except that I think it needs to have something around it to define it-perhaps a border or maybe the outline of the spoon around the whole logo-I don't know! I also think that the gray "com" part needs to be darker gray. I like the spoon though.

Jun. 12, 2009 9:28 am
I have been visiting this site since 1998, and have been a member for a few years. I have to say I like the logo from 2000-2009 better. Maybe I'm just used to it. I do like where the new spoon is. I just don't think it stands out as much as the older one. I always associated allrecipes with the colors orange and red. The new logo has no red in it, maybe if the spoon was red or the wording or spoon were not so close to the same color. I also don't like the gray color the com is. Maybe if that was red. Gray is just so gloomy. Also when it's at the top of the page(don't know what it's called, the little tab thing) it's reminds me of Rachael Ray, not allrecipes.

Jun. 12, 2009 10:49 am
Like it - love the orange & that the spoon has the dot in .com! Maybe it needs red, & com should be darker.

Okay you're making me feel oooooold LOL. I remember all of these logos! Nice job on the new logo though, I like it :o)

Jun. 12, 2009 2:38 pm
Definitely prefer the new logo. Match more pleasing and I love the colors!

Jun. 12, 2009 3:12 pm
I really like the orange. Cool about the history too!

Jun. 12, 2009 4:00 pm
I like how clean and happy it looks.

Jun. 12, 2009 8:39 pm
@cshrwd said it perfectly. As a marketing VP, I look design all the time. My biggest beef (pun fully intended) is the far too light look of the font.

Jun. 13, 2009 8:52 am
I'm sure you want to keep some cohesiveness with the new logo and the old one. My only complaint is I think the spoon gets lost because of all the orange. I'm not a big fan of the new font either. Thanks for sharing.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but I don't like the condensed type. It makes me feel a little claustrophobic. I actually liked the previous one better. I'm actually not fond of putting ".com" in logos either.

Jun. 13, 2009 11:34 am
I love the new logo. Congratulations to everyone at Allrecipes for your continued growth and success. I remember when you were cookierecipe.com etc.

The 2000-2009 logo looks more modern and the simplicity is more appealing. Short and to the poing. I also don't like the colors of the new logo - the previous logo was very striking and made a sophisticated impression.

Jun. 13, 2009 5:11 pm
I have truely enjoyed your site for many years now. I use it many times weekly if only to get ideas, to check out new recipes or to prepare a new treat. I am always verbalizing referrals to you, always with a thank you in return. You are the BEST on the Web. Thank you, Ilene

Sorry, I don't like the new logo. Letters too crammed together. Like the orange, don't like the non discript color of com. Spoon for dot is"ok". Avid reader, user since '98.

Hi Jeff - thanks for the info. I do like the new logo and the "spoon dot" is clever. Love the happy sunshine orange color. Great site, great recipes and tips.

Love the website, love the new logo! Great job, great recipes! You guys rock! :)

Jun. 14, 2009 1:32 pm
I'm one who usually likes new logos. I'm really not fond of the new logo. The location of the spoon for the dot is clever, but I think that it served a better purpose in the middle. The previous logo looks simpler, clearer, cleaner, more modern, and easier to read. The ".com" on the end is not needed these days, except for external advertising (other websites, tv, radio). If you must have it, ".com" could be done like in the 1999 logo -- smaller and in black... or maybe the same orange as the spoon. ...And it could merely be added to the end of the 2000-2009 logo. Though I think that would take away from it. Sorry, but I think the 2000-2009 logo is the best yet! :) I miss the vibrant paprika of the words, and the stronger orange for the spoon, and the strength and simplicity. It's memorable. :)

Jun. 14, 2009 8:47 pm
I'm not particularly partial to either logo. I like the concept, the spoon is nice and simple; a to-the-point image. However, I find the color and overall appearance bland and unappealing. I don't think it's modern and it doesn't inspire- excitement or creativity. It needs to have more movement. I'm on the fence about whether the ".com" needs to be in the logo itself.

Jun. 15, 2009 5:06 am
new font, sort of ok. It tends at first glance to look like a lump instead of a word. Spoon fine. Greyed out com? Hate it. Overall. Ok. Just well ok.

Love it!

Jun. 15, 2009 6:57 am
I liked the font and color of the old one better, but I do like moving the spoon to the natural divide between "allrecipes" and "com". However, I don't really think changing the logo ("updating" it) was really necessary.

Jun. 15, 2009 9:14 am
I love everything about the new logo. Thanks!

Jun. 15, 2009 10:34 am
I like it! Kinda cute, really.

Jun. 15, 2009 12:26 pm
I was afraid you'd do something too different as businesses can sometimes lose brand association by changing names and logos too much (the public tires of it)... but as usual, you folks are on your game and have come up with an update that enhances your image while mantaining the look of your past success. Kudos!

I like the 2000 to 2009 Logo better. It's a match with the (circled) AR icon. Also, with the colors and bolder font, it snapped out at you more. The new one looks like it should just be used to replace the allrecipies.com that was on the site.

Hi, Everybody! We LOVE your comments about the new Allrecipes logo--especially that you like the "happy orange color"! Thank you, thank you!! You made our day!

Prefer the old logo. The new one is too squashed together and the gray "com" is ugly. Loved the old deeper red. The orange on the new one doesn't stand out as much. I prefer logos that pop out. One that makes a mark on my memory....which these days needs all the help it can get. Keep the spoon! That's how I remember your site.

About Me
Allrecipes.com is the world’s largest food site created entirely from contributions from talented home cooks. Allrecipes was first introduced in 1997 by five college students who loved cookies and had the early vision the web would be a fantastic place for people to find and share everyday food ideas. Twelve years later, Allrecipes.com is home to an amazing community where millions of recipes, reviews, ratings, photos, and blog postings spanning all types of ingredients, dish types, occasions and cooking styles are viewed and shared daily. Allrecipes grows every day as the community continues to share new ideas and experiences. Along with the original site, Allrecipes now has communities for home cooks in Australia/NZ, China, France, Germany, and the UK/Ireland. (Check them out! You’ll find links at the very bottom of this page.)
