About this Cook
Cooking for a family of five,I learned early on that cooking from scratch was much healthier and cheaper than using prepared ingredients, a tradition I carry on to this day. Now, with so many apparently nefarious ingredients in prepared foods like GMO, Aspartame, various chemicals, food coloring, 'natural flavors', etc. using unadulterated ingredients seems more imperative. I will attempt to make anything and have found one can eat just about anything they desire if one just prepares it themselves. On the restaurant circuit, I have tried every cuisine I could find, having lived in cosmopolitan international cities like Manhattan and San Francisco, and if given the choice will choose a restaurant where it is apparent only the 'natives' go, even to the point of no one speaks English in the restaurant.
My favorite things to cook
I found I was weak in preparing soups and salads, so I worked on it until now they are just about my favorites, although I am a natural baker, so I have success on that front rather easily.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My boyfriend is Southern so that is my new passion. My 'traditions' I suppose are Asian stir-fry and Mexican as those cultures are so prevalent where I live.
My cooking triumphs
Pies, in particular Lemon Meringue and Persimmon, Salads, Soups (homemade broth is key)
My cooking tragedies
Rice Krispie Bars made at 12 years old with my girlfriend. We dyed it blue and we both got sick. My early-on pot roast gravy turned green from roasting carrots in the broth along with the beef. Early bread that was hard enough to be a doorstopper.

Basil-Lime Sorbet
I halved the sugar right from the get-go, following other reviewers' advice. Basil from the farmers market is cheap and limes from the tree outside make this a very economical palate cleaner. This tasty and refreshing sorbet is a favorite at our house now and I always have some in the freezer.
