Flavorful German Pork Chops and Sauerkraut

Reviewed: Jun. 30, 2013
We enjoyed this. I did elect to omit the bread crumbs for half my chops because of gluten intolerance of one of my guests, but that didn't seem to affect how well this turned out. My only other change was to add a minced clove of garlic to the sauerkraut onion mixture. Thanks, Mrs Blizzard!

Mama Bear's Porridge

Reviewed: Jun. 28, 2013
I used 1% milk instead of the powdered milk because that is what I had, but that was my only change. I often add cinnamon, raisins, and or eggs to oatmeal but I never thought of add vanilla extract. What a good idea!

Onion Quiche

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2013
I used Vidalia onion added about 1/4 tsp grated nutmeg and about 1/4 tsp chili powder. Instead of mixing the cheese with the eggs I sprinkled it over. It looked beautiful when it came out of the oven but was hard to cut after it cooled. We enjoyed this and I will use it as a base for a spinach quiche next time. I agree it doesn't fill a standard pie dish, but if you use a frozen shell it will be fine.

French Short Pastry

Reviewed: Jun. 25, 2013
The proportions are spot on. I have tried other short crusts and found them greasy. As I always do, I replaced the water with vodka from the freezer and only needed 4 tbs. I wish I had read the review advising doubling the salt with sweet butter. I was using this crust for a quiche that bakes at 375 so I did blind bake it for about 15 minutes at 425 to avoid a soggy bottom. This turned out beautifully.

Eggplants a la Dawlish

Reviewed: Jun. 23, 2013
This was different from our usual eggplant and tomato combinations. I'm not sure I'd make it again, but it was nice to try something different.

Garlic Vegetable Saute

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2013
Delicious! My only change was not using yellow peppers as I had none. I love the small kick from the jalapeño. So easy but tasty. Thanks, Anna!

Lamb Chops in Duck Sauce

Reviewed: Jun. 21, 2013
This smelled wonderful as it cooked and didn't disappoint when served. I made my own adobo seasoning mix and reduced the amount of salt, but kept all the other ingredients as listed. I was using loin chops about 1.5 inches thick so I felt the cooking time was too long. I took mine out after 30 minutes added the duck sauce and continued for about 10 more minutes for a total of 40 minutes. We will absolutely have these again.

Avocado Peanut Butter Brownies (Vegan)

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2013
Since the first review I wrote has mysteriously disappeared, I will try again. As written this recipe is just this side of indelible. If the avocado is to replace butter then why add oil? As I originally stated, I melted my peanutbutter chocolate mixture slowly, in a double boiler and reduced the sugar to 1 cup. This will eliminate the graininess. 3/4 cup of sugar is probably enough. All in all, I am surprised this recipe is included in the My Plate collection.

Orange Shallot Marsala Pork Chops

Reviewed: Jun. 17, 2013
Pork and orange flavors are lovely together. I used orange juice because I had no tangerines and I replaced the orange zest with Simple and Crisp orange slices. This went together so quickly and looks lovely and tastes even better. This would impress even the fussiest guest. Thank you, Cheereeo!

Bourbon Street Rib-Eye Steak

Reviewed: Jun. 16, 2013
I marinated my steaks for about 10 hours. I will cut the brown sugar back to 1 tbs in the future because it was a bit too sweet for me, but the flavor of the bourbon came through subtly and overall we liked it. We used an electric grill so flare up wasn't a problem but I expect it might be over a flame.

Potato and Spinach Croquettes

Reviewed: Jun. 14, 2013
I began with leftover garlic mashed potatoes and pan fried, but followed the rest of the recipe. We really enjoyed these with a sweet chili dipping sauce.

Curry Chicken Salad with Grapes

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2013
We all enjoyed this. In an effort to save calories, I omitted the butter, just toasted the almonds and curry powder in a dry pan until fragrant. I used garlic powder because I just do not care to bite into garlic in a salad and then I found someone had eaten the grapes I was hoarding to make this so I added a handful of raisins (dried grapes, right?). I also added some green onions that needed to be used. I chilled this for an hour as stated, but next time, when I actually have grapes, I will make the salad either in the morning or night before. This only gets better. Thanks for a great chicken salad.

Scotch Shortbread

Reviewed: Jun. 13, 2013
Very nice shortbread. Rich and buttery. I do question the instruction to mix the ingredients by hand. The probability, in my opinion, is that would lead to overworking it and making it tough.

Chocolate-y Iced Mocha

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2013
This is a keeper! I am not a fan of sweet coffee drinks so I modified it slightly. I used my own cocoa mix which is from the can of cocoa, but with half the sugar they suggest and my own syrup from a recipe here on AR. I reduce the sugar in that also. The almond milk gives it a richness I love. Just what I need - more caffeine! Thanks Linda, I may make this by the gallon, LOL.

Kiwinanaberry Cream Smoothie

Reviewed: Jun. 11, 2013
I have made this several times now and with my changes, of course I think it is worth 5 stars. Without them maybe 2 stars. As written it almost seemed acidic to me so I exchanged the tangelo for mango and eliminated the berries and sugar. Either almond milk or 1% are my preference and fat free Greek yogurt.

Margarita Marinade

Reviewed: Jun. 9, 2013
I used a raspberry infused tequila, which makes a very tasty drink so I was disappointed with the marinade. There was nothing wrong with it and it smelled wonderful while cooking. The downside was that even after 24 hours in the marinade there was very little perceptible flavor boost and the honey made it almost guaranteed to char. I doubt I will make it again, but thank you for the chance to try something new.

Grilled Cod

Reviewed: Jun. 6, 2013
I used a fresh caught cod steak, so I had to adjust the timing. I had no lemon pepper so I used fresh ground and my homemade creole seasoning. This turned out so buttery, moist and delicious. Now I remember why I love cod so much. Thanks for a great addition to our grilling rotation.

Moroccan Spicy Carrot Salad

Reviewed: Jun. 4, 2013
I'm always looking for new ways to serve carrots and I'll happily add this to my rotation. I overdid the vinegar (bottle slipped) so they were a tad acidic, but still quite good. Thanks, Malak!

Garlic Mashed Cauliflower

Reviewed: Jun. 1, 2013
What a difference those two little tbs of cream cheese make! I have tried other recipes and been disappointed, but this really is good. I cheated a little. Instead of cooking the garlic and adding it, I used Garlic Herb low fat cream cheese. This will be repeated often. Thanks, Andie.

Vanilla Banamango Smoothie

Reviewed: May 31, 2013
I loved the zip the ginger added to the flavor. If I hadn't put them in myself I doubt I would have known there were carrots in there. I think you get a better fruit taste if a smoothie isn't too cold so I don't add ice, my banana, mango and juice were refrigerated. For me, this is just perfect. Thank you, Ecco Star.
