Meal Planning

Living right next to a grocery store is kind of fun. It's easy to just walk over, grab a few things, walk back and make dinner or lunch or brunch or breakfast or whatever! It's not so great on the budget, though...

I find myself buying more than I need, more often than I need, which isn't too great since I'm trying to save up some for next semester over the summer.

I usually try to make a loose two-week meal plan every two weeks (duh LoL) so that I know what I'm going to need and when I'll need it. I try to stick to a few simple guidelines to make sure nothing goes to waste and I'm saving as much money as I can.

-The first week's dinners and breakfasts use things I already have.
-Weekday lunches are the leftovers from the previous night's dinner.
-Breakfast incorporates a staple item that can be bought cheaply in bulk.
-Six meals are left open (breakfasts, lunches and/or dinners) for changes in plans or going out.

Leaving some meals left blank allows me to shuffle things around in case plans change or I feel like going out with friends or family. Gotta have a little bit of fun and flexibility, right? =)

I'll probably try to get this started up again so I can start my penny-pinching and have the money I need for books and classes when September rolls around... I kind of need to diet anyway. I've been eating some foods that are higher in calorie and fat than I'd normally eat and I'm seeing the difference!

My goal is to work out my meal plan using bits of free time the rest of this week and have it ready by at least Sunday. I'll be sure to post it when I'm done.

Wish me luck!

Good luck! We have a grocery store pretty much in our backyard and you're right, it's very difficult not to just hop over there and buy things!

Thanks CC! I'm glad you enjoyed =) And thanks Abbey! It's great having one so close when entertaining because if you need something, it's a two-minute walk, but it's bad for when I get impulse cravings for goat cheese or orange soda =P

I too like to plan my meals out for the week. Not only does it keep me from staring inside the frig for an hour trying to figure out what to cook but, as you mention, it keeps me on budget. My ultimate goal is to plan my meals for the week around the sales at the grocery store and add coupons to those ads...but it is so much work. Good luck to you!

About Me
I've grown up in a family of amateur chefs. My dad is the grill maste, my mom is the oven improv queen, my grandmas are lean, mean baking machines, my uncles have great taste in wine and my aunts know how to cook for the masses. I used to love spending time in the kitchen with them when I was a kid; learning as I watched and helped them prepare meals. Now I have a pretty good sense of my own taste and cooking ability. I definitely have a love of baking and making sweets, mostly because it creates a great excuse to invite people over =) Other than that, I'm pretty adventurous in the kitchen. I love foods with strong, complex flavors. Growing up in Texas, I developed a taste for spicy food and can't get enough of it. Right now, I'm concentrating on healthy meals with balanced nutrition to help myself and my family get in great shape for this summer and the future =)
My favorite things to cook
I love to bake. Cooking anything is fun, but put a cake pan or some muffin tins in front of me and I just get excited =)
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love all the baking tips I've gotten from my grandparents who are some of the best bakers EVER and the patience I've learned from my mother, who makes the best northern-style chili you will ever eat!
My cooking triumphs
I love to entertain and make tapas for parties. I think some of my greatest triumphs have been snack foods for parties and conventions ranging from Mediterranean shrimp croustinis to heart healthy blackberry mini-muffins =)
My cooking tragedies
Fondant. I have never been able to really get fondant down. I can usually make it alright, but something always goes wrong when I'm trying to use it. I'm very much a perfectionist, so when it doesn't look JUST RIGHT, it bugs me =P
