Homemade Cereal

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
This cereal is so good. I add 3/4 c. brown sugar and for the last fifteen minutes, I stir in 4 cups of various fruits and nuts. My family goes crazy over this!

Scott's Buffalo Wing Sauce

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2010
I can't believe how few reviews this recipe has- this is AWESOME wing sauce- much better than anything you can buy at the store. It's restaurant quality for sure! Thanks for the recipe Scott. I thought ketchup was a weird addition, but that and the honey really tone down the heat. This has tons of flavor and not too hot at all (and I'm a spice wimp).

Armenian Rice Pilaf

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2010
I used chicken bouillon powder (about two tablespoons) and water instead of the cubes and broth. This was very good, but you should know that it makes a TON. I'd say it's enough for at least fifteen people. The taste is excellent.

Cappuccino in a Jar

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
I skipped the cinnamon but otherwise followed directions. I made it for gifts and got rave reviews. I made more than I needed and I've been enjoying a cup or two every morning. This mix is absolutely addictive!

Green Chutney

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
I have better luck using my blender than food processor for this- it gives it a finer, more even chop. Also, I forego the peanuts and add a few sprigs of mint. Tastes so fresh and especially delicious with warm naan.

Sweet Tamarind Chutney

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
DO NOT heat your oil over medium- go a little lower. I can't describe exactly what happened when the spices hit the oil, but I can tell you that it felt like my lungs had collapsed. My kids literally ran screaming from the kitchen and I finished cooking with a dish towel over my nose and mouth. I really think the heat is too high on this because I made something similar later on at a lower temp and didn't have anything like this happen. I'm still giving this four stars though because this is the best tamarind chutney I've ever tasted. If you don't have access to tamarind paste (I'm talking to you, my fellow rural Iowans!) then you can make a delicious substitute using 1 tablespoon each of dried, chopped apricots, dates and prunes. Pour boiling water on them and let them soak for fifteen minutes and then drain and puree them with one tablespoon lemon juice.

Naan

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
This is the best naan I've ever had. Start about two hours before you're serving dinner so that it can rise sufficiently or it won't be ready. Also, my kids and I had fun flattening it with our hands just prior to tossing on the grill- we didn't bother rolling it out. I think my entire family would be perfectly happy if I served this and nothing more for dinner. It really is that good.

Butter Chickpea Curry

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
I made this exactly as written and it was phenomenal. It packs some heat, but it's really more flavor than fire. Totally delicious.

Vegetarian Korma

Reviewed: Dec. 31, 2009
I made some minor changes, (i.e. olive for veg oil, fire roasted chiles for japs, etc.) but I think this recipe base is so solid, no minor change you make is going to affect the outcome. This is not a burn your mouth off dish, it's delicately spiced and delicious.

Golden Rum Cake

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2009
I'd never had rum cake but thought it sounded good. The rum taste is so overwhelming. and I even used a quarter cup less than the recipe called for. There were thirty people at Christmas and we all agreed it was way too rummy.

Chocolate Crinkles II

Reviewed: Dec. 13, 2009
These are so delicious- like mini fudge brownies! I stuck the dough in the freezer for 45 minutes and it was a breeze to work with. These are very easy and I think they would look beautiful on a Christmas tray.

Rice and Lentil Soup in a Jar

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2009
I've been trying out soup mixes to make for Christmas gifts- I made this one tonight and knew I'd found my winner. I used red lentils, but instead of the green ones I used split peas. Also, I added 2 Tbs. of dried chopped onion. If you don't have poultry seasoning, you can make your own (I did) using one tablespoon each of the following: sage, marjoram, rosemary, celery seed and thyme. Thank you so much for this recipe- OUTSTANDING! *UPDATE* Every time I make this, I add 1/3 c. barley and an extra cup of water to make up for the barley.

Easy OREO Truffles

Reviewed: Dec. 8, 2009
My sons are crazy about these. I use almond bark instead of baking chocolate. I dip half in chocolate bark and half in white- then I drizzle the opposite color on top of them. They look very fancy and taste delicious.

This was surprisingly good considering how simple it is! It was much better the next day, after spending the night in the fridge.

I used this idea with Rollo candies and instead of candy on top, I used mixed nuts. They are the lazy mom's turtles! Love it!

Slow Cooker Lentil and Ham Soup

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2009
This soup is very tasty. The best part is that you get to use up whatever veggies you've been saving in your freezer from leftovers. I added rice and it was phenomenal. Thank you for the recipe!

Salisbury Steak

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2009
The steaks themselves are good, but the sauce is kind of awful. I made this again and for the sauce used onion soup mix, water, cream of mushroom and some fresh mushrooms sauteed in EVOO and it was very, very good. Not healthy, but good comfort food.

Non-Edible Cinnamon Ornaments

Reviewed: Dec. 7, 2009
I've made these for years using just applesauce and cinnamon. There's just no need for the other spices or glue- the ornaments are perfect without them. Roll them out thick so they don't crack, and if you're air-drying, gently turn them twice a day so they don't warp. Perfect kid-friendly craft!

Cowboy Oatmeal Cookies

Reviewed: Nov. 15, 2009
To say that this is a good cookie is like saying a Rolls Royce is a nice car. While the statement is true enough, it really doesn't do it justice. These cookies knocked my socks off and every other oatmeal cookie I've ever had is tasteless crud in comparison. P.S. Thanks to other reviewers who came before me, I added a healthy splash of vanilla and an extra cup of oatmeal. I'm glad I did.
