Barley Bake

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2010
This was very good- even my kids loved it. I want to play around with it though to try some different flavor combinations. Next time I make it I'm going to add garlic and mushrooms (I was out of them this time around) and maybe sub some white wine for some of the broth. I think the possibilities are endless with this delicious dish. Thank you for the recipe, Kat!

Candied Almonds

Reviewed: Mar. 7, 2010
These are perfect- just like we've had at the fair. The directions are a little misleading- DO NOT stop cooking when the almonds seem covered in syrup. Keep going until the syrup has turned into a sugary consistency- almost like a sugary powder. Then quickly remove it from heat and scrape out onto the waiting wax paper to cool. This is very good ground up and served over ice cream. YUM!

Jo's Rosemary Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 27, 2010
I can't compliment this bread enough. Everyone I've had sample it agrees it's the best bread they've ever had. We lightly butter it and then put plenty of fresh ground pepper on it. If you're baking it in the oven, bake @ 375 just until nicely browned, but not dark.

Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2010
I made five times the original recipe for a big get-together and everyone raved. The only modification I made was to add a good splash of vinegar. Very tasty!

Classic Waffles

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2010
This recipe makes a great waffle. I threw everything in the blender because I'm lazy and it worked out perfectly. Easy to pour, too.

Buttermilk Syrup

Reviewed: Feb. 25, 2010
This is so good warm over waffles. After it's been in the fridge for a day it thickens up to a wonderfully thick caramel sauce to serve over ice cream.

Fluffy White Frosting

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2010
This frosting rocks! I made the recipe exactly as stated. It's very fluffy and marshmallowy. This is very similar to one my grandma used to make.

Beef Tips

Reviewed: Feb. 11, 2010
I threw everything in the crockpot in the morning and let it cook all day- the meat was very tender. I added no salt, and less soy and worcestershire because I wanted to add some golden mushroom soup and some fresh mushrooms. I also stirred in some cream cheese at the end because I had a little I wanted to use up. I guess I changed almost everything about it, but that only means that it's easy to adapt to your tastes!

Vegetarian Chickpea Sandwich Filling

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2010
I changed this quite a bit, but I'm giving it five stars anyway because it's a brilliant idea I never would have thought of on my own. First, I mashed with a potato masher. I doubled the mayo (used olive oil mayo), subbed dried basil for the dill, added garlic powder and cayenne pepper. The rest I kept the same. This is a great alternative to tuna salad for my seven year old, because I don't have to worry about mercury. I will definitely be making this often!

Wacky Cake VIII

Reviewed: Feb. 9, 2010
This was so good! I took the advice of others and made an icing of powdered sugar, margarine, milk and icing, but I also added a splash of vanilla. Everyone in my family agreed this is a five.

Simple Strawberry Smoothie

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2010
I've made a lot of smoothies, but never thought to use anything other than OJ for the juice. My boys loved the apple juice for a change of pace, and I realized there's a whole world of smoothie flavor combinations that I haven't tried. Thanks, MSC!

Perfect Lemon Curd

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2010
It took me about thirty minutes over low heat to get this to thicken, and even tempering the eggs I ended up having to strain it. I've since learned that there is a microwave lemon curd recipe on this site- I think I would try that one if I make it again.

Linguine Pasta with Shrimp and Tomatoes

Reviewed: Feb. 4, 2010
This was very tasty with Cindy's modifications. It's got great flavor from the basil and the Cajun seasoning, but it's not too hot, even for the kiddos. I don't cook with wine because I don't care for the taste, so I subbed chicken broth instead. Oh, and I also added onion and green pepper. Mr CP loved this so much!

Garlic Anchovy Linguine

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2010
I should start out by confessing that I'm no fan of anchovies. I don't know what persuaded me to try this recipe but I am so glad I did. The anchovies kind of dissolve into the veggie mix- you don't even know they're there (especially if, like me, you only use 4 oz. of anchovies instead of six). I did cut the red pepper down to one tablespoon and it was plenty spicy but not burn your mouth off. Also, I recommend doubling up on the veggies because the first time I made this, it felt a little scant- doubling made sure we had a hearty bite every time. Also, any old noodle works well in this. Thank you so much Rachel, for a dish that tastes like it came from a restaurant and takes very little time or energy to prepare!

Cinnamon Rolls II

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
These are delicious! I used 8 oz. cream cheese and an extra half cup or so of confectioners' sugar and a hefty splash of vanilla. These remind me so much of the ones my grandma made when I was a girl! Thank you for the recipe.

Vegetable Cutlets

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
These are "okay" as written. They are a five star recipe when you dip them in an egg and milk bath and then roll them in cracker crumbs before frying. The bread crumbs just didn't taste quite right.

Golden Yam Brownies

Reviewed: Jan. 24, 2010
These are so good they're dangerous! I use only 3/4 cups of each of the sugars and it's still very sweet. Also, I only use three eggs and I boil, peel and mash my sweet potatoes beforehand. I've made these three times in the past month!
