German Chocolate Cake III

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2014
Um, let me just say that I am really thankful for other reviewers! Had someone simply given me this recipe without additional tips, it would have been a total flop. Pretty sure I over-mixed the cake and baked it a little too long (it's falling apart); also I stirred the icing constantly for at least 10 minutes, then removed it from the heat figuring that was as good as it was going to get. Came back after allowing it to cool, only to realize it was still super runny! I wish I had read reviews sooner. I ended up making a half-batch more of the icing (just the butter, toasted coconut, vanilla, milk, sugar and I added watered down cornstarch to help it thicken.) I also wish the original recipe would give a more specific timeline on how long the icing is supposed to cook. I haven't even tasted the cake yet, but I wanted to let others know to please read the reviews on this one! I will update my review once we try it for my father in law's birthday tonight. {Update : People at the party said they enjoyed it, but I'm pretty sure they were just being nice! It came out kinda dry, not really too much flavor going on. Likely won't make it again.}

Amazing Lemon Scones

Reviewed: Jun. 5, 2013
These are amazing! I've never made scones before but wanted to try them, and ended up not having the fruit required for other ones. So I gave these a go, and they are delicious! Super easy to put together, we will make them again and again. The only thing I would add is that the icing makes quite a bit. I will likely dunk them entirely in the mixture next time, or for a lighter, less-rich flavor, just cut the recipe for icing in half and you would have plenty to drizzle. Thanks for sharing!!

Mom's Ginger Snaps

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2012
I followed directions exactly, but got very flat, un-crinkled, couldn't-even-tell-I-sprinkled-sugar-on-them cookies. Disappointed with the appearance but they are *delicious*. Also, they flatten out like crazy, (they were so gooey I couldn't even roll them in the sugar, just sprinkled the tops) so do not put more than 9 on a pan.

Blueberry Cream Muffins

Reviewed: Nov. 4, 2012
These were pretty good, but I also added 1/2 cup more of the sugar and 1/2 cup more of the blueberries, so I ended up with about 32 muffins instead of 24. Honestly not sure if I would make them again, seemed a little off and not really sweet or what I was expecting them to be.

Crispy and Creamy Doughnuts

Reviewed: Sep. 17, 2012
Really good! So much work, but you are making homemade donuts, so what do you expect?! Made a lot, and the leftovers weren't that great, but they were so good when they were fresh. I didn't have enough icing so I tried thinning it out, but I still didn't have enough. I ended up melting some chocolate chips mixed with a bit of butter and then dipping some in that. I also dipped some of them in the glaze and then topped them with toasted coconut. Really good, I'm sure I'll attempt them again on a day that I have lots of energy :)

Good Old Fashioned Pancakes

Reviewed: Aug. 31, 2012
One of my favorite recipes that I've come accross on this site! My recipe card is also looking weathered, as I make these at least once a week ;) Sometimes I add in about a cup of chocolate chips for a treat. I'd also like to try adding some fresh blueberries one of these days, I'm sure that would also be delicious! Thanks so much to you and your grandma for sharing, from someone who didn't have family recipes passed down to her.

Burger or Hot Dog Buns

Reviewed: Aug. 27, 2012
These were pretty awful. Way too dense, didn't rise well at all. I've made bread dozens of times, and it's never started out with a pot on the stove! I would like to try these again, but next time I'll proof the yeast (warm milk, heated in the microwave for about 45 seconds, with the sugar stirred in and topped with yeast - when the yeast gets foamy, it's good to go), and then add in remaining ingredients. I think the milk just gets too hot on the stove and made the yeast less active.

French Baguettes

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2012
Lucky for me, this was the first french bread recipe I've ever tried and they came out EXCELLENT. The only thing I would change is to double it! We had none left after dinner!! Also, I couldn't wrap my brain around the rolling/shaping step, so I just rolled them out by hand, cut it in half and then just rounded out the cut end to make it look more like a loaf. Super simple, but so good. Thanks for sharing!

Slow Cooker Beef Stew IV

Reviewed: Aug. 26, 2012
This was so good! Don't skip a step.. it really did seem like a lot to go through, but it was worth it. I didn't have red wine on hand, so I looked up substitutions for it. The one that kept popping up was grape juice, so I gave that a try and it still tasted really good. I will make this again and again, for sure! Thanks for sharing!

Vicki's Hush Puppies

Reviewed: Jul. 30, 2012
Just popped one of these babies in my mouth. Delicious! They are a little sweet, but I'm from the South and we like it that way! Didn't have but one egg, so I added a splash of milk to wet the batter a little more. Wouldn't change a thing. Thanks for sharing!

Layered Fruit Salad

Something about the word "salad" being in the title of this is just wrong! It was really good, but more like a dessert. I would definitely make it again, but not for a side dish! Thanks for sharing!

Whole Wheat Blueberry Muffins

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2012
These were good, but not what I expected. I wanted a less-healthy, sweeter tasting blueberry muffin! When I start behaving, I'll likely go back to this recipe, but for the time being it just wasn't what I wanted. But thanks for sharing!

Perfect Apple Pie

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2012
This is quite likely the only recipe for apple pie that I'll ever use again. I did not use the crust recipe, but the filling was so simple and just tasted amazing! I love Dutch Apple Pie, so the only thing I might do differently in the future is to make a crumb topping to cover. Thank you for sharing!

Chicken Enchiladas II

Sopapilla Cheesecake Pie

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2012
Don't change a thing!! It's delicious. I didn't see any need to pre-bake the first crust, or to add this or that. It's amazing the way it is. I did stress about the crescent roll dough on my first attempt - it kept falling apart when it was in little pieces, I couldn't imagine trying to roll it all together and then place it in the pan! I ended up peicing it together while in the pan for the top and bottom layers. Get it together the best you can, but don't stress. The topping ends up covering it and it actually turned out looking quite nice. Thanks for sharing!

Herb Roasted Pork

Reviewed: Apr. 27, 2012
I made this for the second time tonight. The first time was for my in-laws. I ended up not having white sugar, so I used brown sugar. It was amazing. They raved about it and I reluctantly shared the recipe!! This time I didn't have plain vinegar, only malt vinegar. Used that, and it was still amazing! Both times I just threw the pork in the crock pot, rubbed seasonings on it, then drizzled the sauce to cover. Let it cook on high for about 6 hours, turning once half-way through.. fall-apart delicious! My picky daughter even loves it!! Don't think I'll ever try a different way to cook a pork roast. This is it!
