About this Cook
I am a 46 yr old mother of a picky 5 year old, so this is a great resource for finding things Savy will eat! I enjoy cooking quite a bit when I have time, and when I don't, it's great to get quick meals or slow cooker meals from here.
My favorite things to cook
I love to grill, and do so year-round. I keep trying to bake, but it doesn't seem to be my forte. More and more often, I am finding the old fashioned way to cook works best - basic food; clean flavors; wholesome, home-grown vegetables. These are what we love! I have a pressure cooker, and try almost everything in it, both for the great combination of flavors, and for the incredible convenience. I am also relatively new to using a bread machine. I drive to the farm to get our milk and cheese, and in every way possible try to use locally grown and produced food. Mom & Dad have chickens, so we have fresh eggs. And our vegetable and fruit garden seems to get bigger every year!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My grandmother always made corn chowder for Christmas Eve. My ex-husband's mother loves to make Christmas cookies with her granddaughters. These are things we remember forever, and I hope to make some of those things happen for my daughter. Also, as a nod to the past, I recommend the book "Root Cellaring" to everyone I know that is interested in conserving energy and preserving their own food (even has a section for city dwellers).
My cooking triumphs
Any time I can make a meal that makes my guests feel special. I made a dinner of baked potatoes, cabbage rolls, (homegrown) corn on the cob, and some salad, and two friends stopped by and raved! Over stuffed cabbage rolls! The tomatoes w/ the cabbage rolls, the cabbage and onions were from my garden. I am a devoted frozen tomato lover!
My cooking tragedies
Most of my baked stuff - I keep telling myself it's because my oven is so old that the temperature isn't regulated correctly. My flubbed pecan pie was a disaster, and I tried a very old recipe for a banana cake that was horrible! Both of them were dry.

BLT Salad
We've been making this recipe in my family for years - it's always a hit no matter where I bring it. However, instead of croutons, we do pasta - usually just elbow maccaroni. I use dreamfields pasta to cut down on carbs, greens, tomatoes, bacon and Hellmans. Can't get much more simple than that!!!

Butternut Squash Bisque
We love this recipe - I add a few red pepper flakes, a bay leaf, and some sweet tart apple. Also, just wanted to mention that butternut squash peel very easily with a vegetable peeler before they are cooked!

Chicken Breasts with Balsamic Vinegar and Garlic
This is great - a quick, easy, and delicious chicken recipe. I do not like mushrooms (like most of my family), so I tend to throw whatever fresh veggies I have on top of the chicken, and they steam beautifully up there. I have made it with fresh broccoli, green beans, peppers, and carrots. Always with lots of garlic and onions. I skip the butter and flour as some of the other posts have mentioned, and we serve it over a wild rice blend - yummy!
