Slow Cooker Stuffing

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
I made this for thanksgiving and it was my favorite dish of the day. SO EASY! And we all love one less thing to worry about on holidays. I used the tip from another reviewer and put a kitchen towel under the lid of the crockpot, and that help keep the stuffing from getting too wet with condensation. Great tip! Also, you definitely need to use only about half the broth at first, then tinker with it later to get your desired level of moistness. I used a honey wheat bread and a challah bread together, and I absolutely loved the combined flavors.

Champagne Punch III

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
I made this for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. Next time I will use a drier wine and/or champage, because it was just a bit too sweet. Also, I made an ice ring in my bundt pan (filled only about 1/4 of the way) and added cranberries and mint leaves, and that looked beautiful in the punch bowl. I also put some cranberries on toothpicks, and then froze them. Then everyone got a cranberry stick in their glass, which looked really pretty. This punch looks and tastes impressive, and I will definitely make it again. And because it uses frozen concentrates, you can keep the ingredients on hand if you need to bring something to an event at the last minute.

Mini Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
I made these for Thanksgiving and they were fantastic. I made them the day before and covered with plastic wrap, and I think they were even more moist because of this. Also, I used a shortening-based traditional filling that I found on another whoopie pie recipe here, because I did not have room in my refrigerator to keep these cold overnight, and I was more than happy with the combination. Also, when I was about half way through, I put the batter in a plastic bag with the tip cut off, and I found that was easier to get them a uniform size. Although, its no big deal if they are not that uniform - I found that I could put together two that were next to each other, because even though my sizes were varied, they were pretty close if they were next to each other. (hope that makes sense) I'm not an experienced baker by any means, and these were very easy for me and made a great impression on my guests. I will make these again.

Make-Ahead Mashed Potatoes

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
This recipe is awesome. I made my potatoes early in the morning for my 4 pm Thanksgiving dinner, so all I had to do was put the pan in the oven after I took out my turkey to rest. They were perfect. Also, I steamed my potatoes instead of boiling them. Steaming them helps lessen the gluey-ness of the potatoes, which I was worried about with make-ahead potatoes. If you want to get really advanced, you can steam the potatoes and when they are about halfway cooked, you take them out and spray them with cold water to get rid of any gluey starch buildup that has started. Then steam them again, and rinse them in cold water again when they are fully cooked. Because this is a make-ahead recipe, this will work well because it doesn't matter if they cool off from the water. Great recipe, definitely helped my stress level and helped me to sit with my guests and relax on Thanksgiving!

Patty's Mashed Turnips

Reviewed: Dec. 22, 2009
I had never made turnip before, but my Dad specifically asked me for turnip on Thanksgiving, so I tried this recipe. It was simple and tasted great. I've never been a turnip fan before, but I will definitely make these again. I made this ahead of time because when they cook, turnips smell a bit icky. I just heated it in the microwave when it was time for dinner, and that worked out great, and I had no lingering turnip odor in my kitchen when guests arrived! Thanks for the great recipe, one of the only plain turnip recipes on this site.
