Tiramisu II

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2008
This is a great recipe and its my first time to make tiramisu. Initially, I thought it was complicate dto make but after seeing this recipe, I went ahead and made one for our Christmas dinner. My family loved it!! I followed the advice of some of the reviewers here and added more esspresso and liqueur (rum). Then allowed it to sit in the fridge for 24 hours. It taste incredible! I'm impressed! The only caveat is that it was hard to get mascarpone in the stores, esp. during this season. A friend told me I could use light cream cheese instead but I wanted to get the real taste of mascarpone. Luckily, I found a tub of it in a 24 hour supermarket and it was on sale!

Pineapple Glaze for Ham

Reviewed: Dec. 24, 2008
This is a simple, classic and no-fail recipe. Only thing I added is some corn syrup as I didn't have enough brown sugar. It was my first time to bake ham with a glaze this Christmas. My family loved it! Even my son, who is a picky eater, asked for seconds. I'll certainly be making this again!

Buttery Soft Pretzels

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2009
I actually added a third more to the recipe as I accidentally put in 2 more tsps. of yeast. So I added more water and flour. Dough came out a little hard and I was worried about it. Surprisingly, after baking, the pretzels came out really soft. Following some of the reviewers' tip, I drizzled melted butter as soon as they popped out of the oven. The taste is heavenly!! They really taste so much like the ones at the Pretzelmaker. With this recipe, I don't need to go to Yorkdale Mall here in Toronto, just to get that treat. My kids readily devoured them even though they're still hot! Thanks! This recipe is definitely a keeper.

Linguine with Clam Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
Following tips from other reviewers, I added sour cream to the sauce, thickened it with pasta water and cornstarch, added more minced garlic and used fresh minced parsely. The result: divine! My hubby and kids loved it. Thanks for the recipe!

Mom's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Dec. 26, 2009
It turned out to be real moist as I ended up using about 3 cups of grated zucchini instead of 2. Ohterwise, I followed the recipe to a T. My son commented that it tasted so like carrot cake.

Instant Pistachio Salad

Reviewed: Jan. 15, 2010
I was introduced to this dessert 6 yrs. ago when I visited my sister in the States. Since then I tried to look for the right recipe online. As per other reviewer's tip, I also left the crushed pineapple undrained and mixed that with 2 boxes of the instant pistachio pudding mix. It gave a really good consistency as well as a nice green jade-like color. Then I folded in a can of mandarin oranges, with a bit of its juice, whipped cream, sliced almonds and marshmallow. Always a hit with the family as well as with company. I brought this once to a potluck and most thought I really slaved on this, lol!

Banana Banana Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 28, 2010
Incredibly moist and delicious, the kids loved it! The only thing I added is 1/c cup of applesauce, because I only had 2 large bananas on hand. Still, the flavor was there and it came out as good. Thanks for sharing this keeper of a recipe!

Buttery Corn Bread

Reviewed: May 11, 2011
I tried this recipe to see how it varies from the other recipe I've obtained from here (Grandmother's Best Cornbread) and have been using for a long time. This actually uses more butter and flour. Its not as moist but the taste and texture is almost the same. I would have used buttermilk instead of plain milk but since I didn't have any handy, I added 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar and let it sit for 10 mins. before adding the eggs. I also adjusted the oven temp. to 350 as I found that the sides quickly browned, leaving the middle quite soggy. All in all this is a keeper!

German Apple Cake I

Reviewed: Nov. 13, 2011
I followed the recipe to the letter. The cake was amazingly moist, not too sweet and delicious. I was short of apples so I added 2 pears. We can't hardly tell the difference. Perfect accompaniment to coffee. This so easy and a keeper!

Chocolate Crinkles II

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2012
As I always do when I try a new recipe, I stay true to the ingredients and instructions. IMO, the only tweaking I would probably do is to add a bit of coffee in it just to intensify the chocolate flavor of the cookie. But that's just the chocoholic in me. My first batch came out looking good with the proper cracks and the kids were absolutely hooked! They are already asking me to make some for their school snacks. I remember having these decades ago and it was nostalgia that had me seeking this recipe. I love it!

Sausage Pasta

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2013
I tried this recipe as I bought 2 lbs. of mild Italian sausage that I didn't what to do with. Normally, whenever I try a new recipe, I always follow the recipe's ingredients and directions to the letter as it would only be fair to do so esp. if I plant to rate and review it afterwards. I didn't have any basil at hand so I put in dried oregano instead. Plus I bought mild sausage so I added smoked paprika and pepper to it while cooking the sausage to compensate for the lack of heat. Otherwise, the recipe itself is perfect and the whole family loved it. Even the kids didn't have any qualms eating the spinach. This is definitely a keeper!

Sweet and Sour Pork III

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2013
This recipe tasted real good except the pork lost its crispiness once I added the sauce. So I must have done something wrong.

Angel Food Cake I

Reviewed: Jun. 8, 2014
Followed the recipe to the letter as I usually do whenever I try one for the first time. The cake turned out to be dense but very delicious. It took some time to get it off the tube pan once it cooled down. So glad I placed a wax paper cutout before pouring in the batter and baking. At least I only had to deal with the sides. The kids loved it. They say its the kind of cake that's already quite a dessert even without any frosting or glaze. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

One Bowl Chocolate Cake III

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2014
Whenever I try a recipe from this site the first time, I customarily follow it to the letter. But for this cake, I decided to add a tablespoon of instant coffee just because I always do with chocolate cakes to enhance the flavor. And lucky thing, too because I forgot to add the vanilla. This is the best, moist, flavorful chocolate cake I ever tasted and the kids, who are my harshest critics, agree as well. For frosting, I decided to make try the fluffy, white frosting from this site as well, for nostalgia, as it was the frosting that my Mom also used when I was a kid myself. It was a perfect combination with the cake. It tasted like marshmallow with just the right sweetness. I'm happy that I finally found the perfect recipe for my chocolate cake. Thanks for sharing!!

Fluffy White Frosting

Reviewed: Jul. 7, 2014
I have been searching for this recipe for quite some time. Its almost similar to the Seven Minute frosting. As a child, my Mom used to frost most of her cakes with this type of frosting and I often remember the marshmallow-like taste. Which really prefer than the usual buttercream. So for nostalgia's sake, I tried this recipe. It was exactly as I remembered it would taste. And best of all, the kids loved it! Thanks for sharing.

Too Much Chocolate Cake

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2014
As the name suggest, it was way too much chocolate for my taste. The kids noted it was also too sweet. One good thing about it is that it was a cinch to prepare especially if your are pressed for time and you need something for a potluck or party. Otherwise, I'll be sticking to the One Bowl Chocolate from this same site as my ultimate recipe.

Beef Stew VI

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2014
The first time I made it I was elated. While I did cook beef stew from scratch before, there were times when I had to depend on the McCormick Beef Stew seasoning mix and my pressure cooker when I'm pressed for time. This recipe is so flavorful and rich. The only change I made, is to coat the beef pieces with flour, garlic powder, pepper and onion powder before browning, which I customarily do when I cook beef stew. The flour, fat and seasonings also creates a very thick and rich roux when the liquid is added so I didn't need to thicken it with cornstarch later. The second time I made this recipe, I added half water, half red wine plus some ketchup just for personal preference. This recipe is definitely godsend!

Easy Batter Fruit Cobbler

Reviewed: Jul. 31, 2014
I love the simplicity of this recipe. We went berry picking and so the abundance of fruits prompted me to search for a recipe that's quick and easy to whip up. My son said he didn't even notice I was preparing something so special in the kitchen as the preparation was so fast. And quite delicious, too. I had to make another one for the hubby as the kids and I finished it off in one sitting, lol. Thanks for sharing!
