About this Cook
I am a registered nurse. I have been cooking since I was in Brownies, about 9 years old. I have a first edition "A World of Breads" by Delores Casella that I've been using since I was a kid, it is about to fall apart. My other interest is motorcycling. I've been riding since I was 8.
My favorite things to cook
Bread always rates high on my list. I've been making bread since I was little.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Oh, I don't know. My mother is quite the cook. Anytime we visit my parent's it is like eating on a cruise ship. I guess I would say cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tons of dishes, very classy and elegant food served buffet style.
My cooking triumphs
Not sure, I've been cooking for so long that as long as I have good recipe I can nail it. Maybe nice braided breads for Christmas. They are always pretty. Lately Cajun creole. Oh, I always have a killer herb garden. I triumph in using fresh herbs!
My cooking tragedies
When I was about 13 I made a Shoe Fly pie. It was like rubber. Even my labrador retriever couldn't eat it! Then when I was 14 I made a red velvet cake. It was so pretty I wouldn't let anyone eat it. It molded. I learned a lesson, food, no matter how pretty you prepare it, is made for eating and enjoyment. Dig in, y'all!

Tasty Buckwheat Pancakes
Great! I used kamut flakes instead of quick cook oats as that is what I had on hand. Soaked the kamut in the wet mixture for 5 minutes or so. Also, used 1/2 cup buckwheat and no white flour. Incidently, I think these would make a great base for a savory pancake with some sort of cream cheese, herb, garlic blend for a topping with a little dab of caviar...but that is just me!

Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
While very good, this does not freeze up quickly and will need to finish off in the freezer with stirring every 30 minutes or so to keep it from settling and getting rock hard. For that reason I rate it 4 stars.

Gelato
I added 1/4 cup of Hershey's Special Dark dry cocoa. It was exquisite. I used my KitchenAid professional mixer that has an ice cream attachment and the frozen ice cream bowl is perfect to make gelato as it does not incorporate air making the gelato taste as good as any traditional Italian gelato I have ever had. I can't wait to try just the base recipe. My husband and son loved it and only wish I had made more. On a side note, we had the dark chocolate gelato after a very spicy meal of traditional red Jambalaya and it was a nice dessert to quench the fire of the main dish. The dark chocolate cocoa is more black walnut in color and it turned out very elegant. And yes, I did strain it, very good advice from previous reviews.
