Young 20s man with three same-aged roommates. I am the only one who enjoys cooking anything more complicated than a simple microwave or oven dish. Always trying to duplicate my mom's and other peoples cooking, and always looking for new things to try.
My favorite things to cook
Grilling and barbecuing, few things are more enjoyable than manning a charcoal grill in the summer with a beer in your hand. But I like many styles of foods, especially those that are typically spicy like Mexican, Chinese, and Indian, of course classic country-style foods and most Italian dishes.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Ham and beans with corn bread on New Years Day. My mom's chili and not just in the winter. Barbecue dipped, bacon wrapped, chicken livers. Slow-cooked ribs in the summer time, and every Christmas Eve. Grandma's chicken and dumplings.
My cooking triumphs
I now feel confident at cooking just about anything on a grill and many common side dishes. However, cooking in an oven and especially entrees prepared on the stove top are still very tricky and difficult for me.
My cooking tragedies
Several tragedies early on with underestimations of how much charcoal to use, but every time I managed to correct it and the meat came out perfect. It usually just resulted in the grilling taking longer, and it can only be better if you grill it slower.
Many tragedies with in-the-kitchen cooking, too. Many times it's terrible, and most of the time the best case scenario is merely edible. But I'm not discouraged and I'm hopefully gaining experience and improving.
