Update on Vegetarianism

Of the adjustments to vegetarianism that I am experiencing, the one I did not expect was the increased desire for sugar!  Most of the adjustments have not been that difficult.  I can do my regular oatmeal with fruit and nuts in the morning; lunch at work can be a challenge only because I sometimes--well, often, really--do not plan ahead; and dinner needs to be quick, but whole grain pasta with the sauce described on this website with tons of veggies and chickpeas is one of my favorites.  The surprise comes at 3:30 p.m. or so, when I get crazy-hungry, and sugar is easily available because (for reasons I will explain in another post) I keep a jar of candy on my desk.  (I know some will say that's stupid, but the socializing effect of having people stop by is wonderful.  :)  )

Planning seems to be key.  If I know I'm going to be ravenous, then I must plan for a healthy snack.  Hah!  I've got it!  Celery sticks with natural peanut butter!!  Or the Nut-trition packages of nuts!!I'll try them this week and see how it goes.

Also, staying away from a lot of cheese continues to be a little bit sad, but I am allowing myself some.  The Mediterranean Veggie sandwich with whole grain bread and "light feta" at Panera is one of my favorite treats if I can get out for lunch or if hubby won't be home for supper.  We'll see.  Blood test in early February.  I've got to get through the holiday season....

friends of recently became vegan due to food allergies and she had the same issue, her naturopath recommended more protein and less refined carbs (white pasta, rice or bread) My husband enjoys the different frozen entrees for lunch many are vegetarian and contain whole grains (either rice, pasta or legumes) there is a Roasted Vegetable one that he really likes. Do you eat low fat or fat free yougurt? fresh vegetables or fruits throughout the day would help with your sugar levels.
