Precious Day Off

I have a day off!  Of course, I also have way too much to do.  It's better than the empty boredom I sometimes see in people who do not have rich lives and relationships, and my heart hurts for them.  In my work, I see people who have nothing better to do than sit around, smoke, dream up ways to create excitement (and sometimes chaos), and avoid the thoughts that they have no one and nothing in their lives for which to live.  :(

So, off I go.  Hopefully I'll get a chance to make this awesome soup that I have made before and which I think I have all the ingredients to make today.  But before I get to that, I have a few more errands to run and stops to make.

  • Shoe shopping: sounds like it should be fun, but with my terrible feet and pronounced orthotics, it is more a chore than a pleasure.
  • Salvation Army: I have too many clothes!  Someone else will be well dressed with the things that I have either outgrown :( or that I just have little to no occasion to wear anymore.
  • Laundromat: Older daughter is coming home for term break, and I need to wash her bed comforter so that it is fresh and welcoming for her.  :)
  • Car maintenance: I have to take the minivan to a 65K "check-up" this afternoon to prepare it for the trip to go to younger daughter's Family Weekend at college in New York.  My mother and stepfather and older daughter are coming, too.  Good thing we have the minivan!
  • Then, maybe, cooking.  !!
And the race begins....  :)

Since I have had my children I have wondered how women get things done. Not the extra things but just the day to day things that it takes to run a household. I wonder what the salary of the stay at home mother would average out to be. Since there are no paid vacations or time off EVER for that matter, nobody in their right mind would ever want this job- no matter what the pay- but we all do! And except for the occasional break downs and screaming outbursts we hardly ever complain (out-loud) because the rewards are pheonomenal. The words "Thank you" are motivational and the words "I Love You" make up for every bad thing that has ever happened on the job.

Yup. My daughters (2) are both off to college now. We went up to Homecoming for the older one this past Saturday, and we are headed down to Family Weekend for the younger one on Friday through Sunday. Which, of course, means that I will get less done at home...but I'd rather be with them, and I know that's as it should be. :) By the way, I'm typing this as I await the completion of the car maintenance appointment! I've completed the first four items on my list!! I do have something I forgot to include--buying a birthday gift for my niece, turning 12 next week (remember, we'll be away over the weekend)--but I feel wicked productive. I even squeezed in a trip to an upholstery shop to have my husband's favorite chair reupholstered (about 3 months late for his birthday, but still....). "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (If He wants me to do them, of course.)

B.C. (that's Before Children) my house was ALWAYS spotless and everything arranged in its place (usually alphabetical by type). I was a real fanatic. Then I had children, and I set my priorities straight. I wanted to be with them and enjoy them to the max so I let those other things go. One is now married and the other finishing up his last semester of college and I still find I don't have the time to get all my canned goods, etc. arranged in proper fashion. Maybe some day.... But, then along will come grandchildren... Congrats on your productive day and have fun at family weekend!

About Me
I love Jesus Christ. I am sold out to working with children, especially to show the love of God to them. I also serve the seriously mentally ill, who are really quite delightful people when they are well.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook things to serve to family for family time together. It doesn't much matter what it is.
My favorite family cooking traditions
The Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Everyone pitches in. That's the tradition I like so much.
