It's been five years since moving here. My family and I have had a great time in New Jersey. There are times when I would dispute the term "Garden State." I think it would be more truthful to call it the "Tick State," or the "Vermin Deer State," or even the "Taxation State." None of those would do much to attract or retain residents, however. Most accurate would be, "Land of Awesome People," but that is probably true of anywhere I've lived.

Now the moving van is gone with all of our belongings in it. It was amazing to watch these two men work. They were efficient, and just seemed to know what the other was thinking. I've never seen two people work this well together. The leader never even seemed to give an order to the helper. Amazing. Everyday a nice woman from the head office would call to see how things were going. Everyday I could tell her how well things were working out. I am still blown away that two people did more work than the five people who loaded us up from our home before we moved to New Jersey.  These guys got everything into one trailer in 2 1/2 days, and smiled and joked through the whole thing. My wife was so happy that she wrote an email to the President of New World Van Lines to let him know about our good experience and to request that these same fellows deliver and unload for us. For anyone who might be using movers in the future, Max and Curtis are their names.

I am about to take apart the modem and router to send back to Comcast. You all get a reprieve from my folksie, long winded rants. But fear not! I will be back in a couple of weeks. I might try using my Blackberry on the road, but I can barely see the screen. Thank you all for the well wishes that I have received. AR is a really nice place to hang out.

From a fellow NJ lover/hater ... happy travels Doc! (congrats on getting out! hahah)

I am sure i would be green with envy to hear how much your new real estate taxes will be! Please don tell me! hahhaha
Jul. 11, 2013 11:15 am
Heather, just because I am a mean, old man, I will tell you what I expect taxes on two acres and a nice three bedroom ranch to be: about $3000 a year. That's about 1/3 of what I paid here in Tabernacle. Continue wit that love/hate thing! I ad to find reading glasses so I could use my Blackberry to post this comment. Tiny print and the website is hard to see on this tiny screen!

YOU ARE KILLING ME! I live in Cherry Hill! We must have had similar taxes! $3000 annual taxes! One can dream! hahah (Love - Diner Food Hate - Red Light Camera's) ;-)

As a NJ Native & current resident, me and the tick-ridden long-legged rats will miss you. My neighbor, Governor Christie, will miss your taxes. Too bad you have to go back to pumping your own gas. See you in a few weeks.

Well, Doc; there's no place that is 100% right but, when you're leaving a place that has made itself 50% wrong then, it's time to reconsider your perch. Sounds like the wife's job is the best thing to happen recently. Be safe and enjoy your journey!

Heather, your sting is reduced a bit. My wife told me I was off by $1000 per year. Still, $4000 a year is better than $9000!

Doug, I will be pumping my own gas and paying higher prices for the privilege. Not sure if I'll miss the ruminant rodents. Mostly because I can shoot them there! I won't miss!

Mike, I have a three day drive pulling a small RV trailer. It will be fun once I get out of Pennsylvania. Constant construction wit no soulder for quite a distance. Once I hit Ohio, it is clear sailing! I was contemplating stopping in at Mother Ann's restaraunt, but it is a fair bit out of the way from my route. I've just noticed that my Blackberry doesn't seem to like the "H" key. Pardon me if I missed any corrections!

Have a safe trip Doc.
Jul. 11, 2013 7:28 pm
I hope you are headed to a great place to live.
Jul. 11, 2013 7:57 pm
Doc- Safe travels to you! If you are going thru PA via the turnpike onto the Ohio turnpike, we are really not that far out of the way! We are just off Rte. 76 in Rootstown. If you seriously want to contemplate stopping there - message me on Facebook I'd be happy to give you directions and would love to meet you! A shot of tequila at our tiki bar lets you sign your name and you'd be the first AR Peep to do so!
Jul. 11, 2013 11:23 pm
Heavens, PA has had the turnpike under construction since the day it opened, much like our Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Have a good trip!

Good reminder Doug Round two of Love/Hate NJ Love - Not having to pumping my own gas (I work in PA and drove on E one time over the bridge holding my breath just to NOT pump gas hahaha Dont judge) Hate - Our property taxes! Mother Ann, I saw Ravenna(sp?) On my way to the campground, I think your place is near there. Rings a bell for some reason. But with the RV in tow, I wasn't sure if I would be able to park it easily. We are up in Mogadore. Probably turning in early because we need to make an early start in the morning. I hope we pass this way again sometime!
Jul. 12, 2013 3:53 pm
Lela, I think it's a great place to live, but my daughter, not so much. She put together a new iPod playlist for the trip. She was sitting next to me with a truly evil grin on her face. That's when I noticed the song that was playing was Highway to Hell!
Jul. 12, 2013 3:55 pm
BSM, It's how Pennsylvania increases it's revenues. Several hundred miles of construction and about 5 miles of actually work happening. I noticed plenty of Troopers out though!
Jul. 13, 2013 5:39 pm
Doc - Mogadore is about 1/2 hour or less away depending on where you are. My sister lives there! You could easily park an RV - there is an empty gravel lot next to us. And, yes, Ravenna is where we are technically - Rootstown Township, Ravenna mailing address. :) Safe travels!!

8000 a year here but still this has been one of my favorite states to live in. Wish we had met before you moved into the cold tundra. Have fun building that new garden.

Have safe travels!

Hey All - Just came across this posting. Peaked my interest as I saw NJ mentioned. I left NJ to move to NC five years ago this past February. The following will make you laugh. I am in a 1000+ square foot home with 3 bedrooms and 1/2 acre of land. I am paying $300 a year in taxes, yes I said $300. I couldnt afford to buy a home in NJ and moving to NC is the best thing I ever did!

Are we there yet???? :o)
Jul. 18, 2013 9:32 am
I have moved so many times in my life, before I landed on the farm. I have never used a mover, but when we leave this place we will need to hold an auction sale and maybe hire a mover. Happy Trails to you and Mrs Doc. Will catch up with you when you land.

Those are some crazy taxes! We have 13+ acres, a 1400 sq. ft. mobile & my taxes are around $250-they will go up about $100 next year, but it is still do-able! Then they will start going down again, unless we add outbuildings, & we do need some-everything needs protection from the weather here-it is pretty brutal.
