Silent? Not so much if you have teenagers in the house. But it is, indeed, a holy night. It is a holy night because this is the night we commemorate as the eve of the birth of Jesus. And so we set it apart for sacred use. God came into the world and became approachable. They held him and knew… MORE

I'm just not feeling it. There's no joy, peace, happiness, excitement, anticipation in my heart this Christmas. I have a bit of disinterest, some dread and a fair amount of blah, but nothing Christmas-y. It's awful knowing that Christmas day is two days away and I am dreading it. What can a… MORE

I feel a political blog post rearing it's ugly head within me, and I don't want to do that to my beloved AR. I had mentioned in a previous post that we get along here so well because we are united in an interest, or more accurately for most of us, a passion.  The problem with politics isn't… MORE

Experiments are not always successful. Thank you Mr. Obvious! He is always there to lend a hand in the aftermath of disappointment. (You won't find him lurking about after disaster. There's too much clean up!) One of the reasons that experiments can go wrong is that we change too many things… MORE

" Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.'' Winston Churchill to the boys at Harrow School, October 29, 1941. Of course, this is… MORE

I love learning to cook. I even love the mistakes I make. Might I be so bold as to declare that I am more fond of my mistakes than my triumphs? I learn from my mistakes, but my triumphs might just be happy mistakes that I am unaware of! Turning a portion of my lovely beef stock into French… MORE

"Good morning, Doc! Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to turn five pounds of beef bones and a few select aromatic vegetables into a delicious beef stock. Then upon completion of the stock, take those same bones and turn them into 1 1/2 to 2 cups of rich, Beef Glace de Viande.… MORE

First, I just want to whine a bit. I'm not used to hard physical labor. Let me tell you that moving a 12' x 6' x 4' pile of wood chips to various places in the yard is hard work! It's even worse because the chips were from the city, and these bad boys have a lot of three and four foot long… MORE

Hi! My name is Dave, and I am a nerd wannabe. There. Admitting the problem is the beginning of the solution! I feel so much better, but, no doubt, you are confused. What does an admission of nerdiness have to do with stocks, broths and sauces? I have the unfortunate drive to research a topic… MORE

I was reading Eva DelBriemari's blog, Hello! and was inspired by the contrast she made between AllRecipes and FaceBook, and her observation that we are of one accord. I have a mind a bit like a grandmother's attic. It's cluttered and dusty, but sorta of fun to browse through on occasion!… MORE

About Me
I'm old and smelly, kinda like a really good salami with that really nice white mould all over it.
My favorite things to cook
Meat, carbs, meat, carbs, meat, carbs and did I mention meat?
My favorite family cooking traditions
Drop a plate of Pierogis and sausages in front of me and watch my eyes glaze over in pure joy.
My cooking triumphs
Schweinebraten mit Knoedel und Krautsalat. Also Edel Hirsch Gulasch was very nice. I make killer Spaetzle and Knockerl also.
My cooking tragedies
There aren't enough electrons in cyberspace! :) Actually, the tragedies usually involve well intentioned creativity out of control.
